That could possibly be the dumbest thing ive ever heard.  And ndfan to answer your question, track does atleast involve some athletic ability.  Fishing is sitting in a boat or standing on shore?

I am laughing so hard I can hardly type.

Dumbest thing you've ever heard (If golfing is just a hobby what is golf.) A hobby?

It was a joke.

The argument is coming down to the difference between competitive recreational activities and athletic competition.  Golfing can fall into both categories.  Fishing only the first.

Auto racing, got me.

Dance, figure skating, gymnastics, diving and activities of this nature are really the tricky areas.  Because they obviously require athletic ability.  The difference or problem is that to the untrained eye there is no way of telling who the winner is in a competitive sense.

"Well our number 1 fisherman heading into the year is Caleb Haugen. He is about 5'10 150. Can bench 225 lbs. 12 times. Runs the mile in under 5 minutes. Can eat 3 steak dinners in one sitting. Can also hold a fishing pole. He will be one of the top fishermen in the state"

Some fishers are athletic.  But what im saying is you could be 4'9" 365lbs and barely bench 70 lbs but you can still fish.

you can be 300 plus pounds and do most of the feild events in track and feild does that not make it a sport because heavier people can do it

barely bench 70...that would mean hes not very athletic or strong.  The guys doing the field events in track can bench over 275 on the average?

Fishing in no way belongs in High Schools. Great idea but no, it would never happen. Takes skill to be a fisherman just like it takes skill to shoot a jumper or toss a football. The competitiveness in fishing is quite equal to that of your usual "sports," also.  Im on the lake nearly the entire spring/summer/fall and fish on average 6 tournaments a year.(probably less this year with gas at $3/gal:shock:) The adrenaline and nerves when your taking off from the launch in the morning is equal to that of pregame locker room jitters before the big game.

In all, I hardly doubt you'd find enough people to want to get high school fishing teams. That just sounds funny. It would be pretty neat though and I'd probably have to try to enroll in school again!!:)

Fishing isnt a sport.  It's just another reason for men to get away from their wives and drink beer for 4 hours.  So you might as well say drinking is a sport.  If you think fishing is.

Read the thread.  Fishing is a sport.  There is a pro fishing tour.  They make big bucks.  If there wasn't any competition then perhaps.
Golf wouldn't be a sport according to you.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that neither are sports.  I've seen a 14-year girl (Wie) beat professional men golfers.  I've seen a woman win a fish tourny.

When a little girl can beat the best of the game, then it is no longer a sport.  Golf was a sport until the pros got beat by a 14 year old girl.

think about what you wrote? might want to delete it if there's ever a girl that could knock down a three and clean your clock on the bb court

Are you kidding me? Wie is an athlete, not any "little" girl is going to be playing golf at 14 and competing with the best of them.  Get real.  Im not so old and have won a few fishing tourneys already fishing against some touring pro's who fish the local circuits. Age, sex, etc does not determine whats an athlete or whats a sport.

Let's take a look at the definate sports.  Basketball, baseball, football, and hockey are all without a doubt sports.  A 14 year old girl could never play in those leauges.  Sure the pro girls could beat the snot out of me at their sports, but im no professional.  Fact is a 14-yr-old girl should not beat grown men (the best of the best grown men) at their own game.  This is not hatemail towards women.  There are plenty of things 14 year girls are better at then any man.
