Region 2 - 2019-2020

I follow scores more than I watch games, but I'm assuming top 3 favorites: HCV, Thompson, Hatton-Northwood.

Region 2's #5 seed this year was 15-5.

The #6 was ranked as high as 6th in the state poll.

I would expect a really balanced region on the top end next year.

I think it will be interesting to see if some of the teams that have traditionally been near the bottom during the last few seasons can make a leap in 2019-2020. North Border, D-V-E, Griggs and FSHP all should be quite a bit better. I think this could be the most balanced region 2 we have seen in quite some time.

I think HCV the absolute number 1 overall team in the state next year and the clear fav to win the Region. After that I could see any mix of teams but I think it will look something like this:

2. HN
3. Thompson
4. Cavalier

Gets a little muddy after that NB returns almost everyone and will be very competitive, Larimore and Grafton both lost a lot. MM also returns a lot.

PRFL MPCG and Griggs after that

FSHP and DVE somewhere near the bottom

I agree that HCV, Hatton, and Thompson are the top three pre-season but think that North Border will be that 4th team that surprises people who expect the usual suspects at the top. I think a few teams that have struggled recently will absolutely be improved. I look for DVE, North Border, and Griggs to all be better than people might be assuming. A complete ranking for me right now would look like this:

1. Hillsboro-CV
2. Hatton-Northwood - I only put them above Thompson because they replace a lot less than Thompson so will probably spend less time figuring it out early in the season
3. Thompson
4. North Border
5. Cavalier
6. Larimore
7. Midway-Minto
8. Mayport-CG
9. Griggs County
10 to 13. Total toss up really tough to say IMO so the final Grafton, DVE, Park River-FL, FSHP

I also think that anything from Larimore down you could pretty much pull names from a hat and have a chance of being just as right. It will all come down to who can stay healthy, who puts in the time in the off season, and who wins a couple tight region games. I foresee this being a top heavy region.

Was very balanced last year with a lot of very good teams, been the best region in the state the past 5 years. I actually think this year HCV is the clear cut favorite. I don’t see anyone in the region really testing them at all.

I think this years. HCV team will be addition by subtraction, they had a couple nice posts come off the bench who I thought were really good. Add them to Hennisgaard, Reed and Benson and I believe they are the team to beat in the state. 4 winds would be my second pick, then Rugby.

How do you mean? From top of the region to the bottom? I think that there is going to a definitive top tier and then after that it's pretty up for grabs but I don't think I agree with the statement that it will be the most balanced competition in years.

Hard to argue the above bold for the last 3 years for sure. Perhaps you are talking entire regional strength which not sure how one would compare that. However, for the past 5 years comparing state tourney finishes:

Average state finish => Region 4 - 2.6, Region 6 - 3.0 and Region 2 - 3.2.

Good bulletin board material for Hatton-Northwood and Thompson

Im sure they already have to posted in their locker rooms  My reason for thinking that is not bc I dont think they are top teams, in fact, I bet they both are ranked or Rv throughout the year. I just think HCV is a cut above. I dont see you throwing out any rankings.

I agree that HCV is the favorite. You added the adjective.

It sounds like Thompson might be down this year as football injuries may limit or wipe out the season for a couple of Tommie starters.

Hoopster rankings from the sticky.
REGION 2
1. Hillsboro-Central Valley (3)
2. Thompson (7)
3. Hatton-Northwood (17)
4. North Border (26)
5. Cavalier (27)
6. Grafton
7. Larimore
8. Midway-Minto
9. Park River-FL
10. Griggs County Central
11. May-Port-CG
12. Drayton/Valley-Edinburg
13. Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page

Who is injured from Thompson what is the severity of those injuries?
Thoughts on the rankings?

I would have given Hatton the edge over Thompson for 2nd behind Hillsboro. I would agree that Cavalier and North Border are 4 and 5 but would have gone in that order. After that I think it is anyone's guess. I see the remainder of the region as totally wide open. You could convince me that teams 6 through 12 finish in almost any order.

I believe Clay Odenbach will miss some at the beginning of the season due to a shoulder injury in football.

I have heard about the top 3 teams a lot from a lot of people (HCV, Hatton, and Thompson) but haven't heard much about anyone else in the region other than it being pretty wide open. Anyone have any thoughts/opinions on other teams from region 2 that could surprise?

I think a big team to watch will be North Border. This group have all been playing varsity for the last couple years. The big question will be if they put in enough time off season to compete with the top 3 or if they will stay around 8 or 9 again.

That's what I have heard as well. Its nice to see some additional competitiveness. Cavalier may be in the mix as well.
