Thoughts on how this season will go?
Any predictions? Anyone top contender in East or West?

West
DLB
The rest is wide open
Ryan lost it's two best pitchers and their best hitter plus a couple seniors that played a big part. They are a pretty young team.

East is easy
Thompson
Central Cass

1. Central Cass

Huge Gap

2. The field

I wouldn't be surprised if the Squirrels have an undefeated season. Lost a couple of hitters, but have the best pitching in the state, and a deep program.

There is a new region set up, with subregions. I'm not sure how state qualifiers will be decided.

What is different about it? I thought they had the sub-regions last season.

Class B is setup exactly the same as last year. 4 from the East and 4 from the West still go. There are still region tournaments.

If Central Cass goes undefeated they will earn it. Especially with playing some quality Class A clubs.

Also - the gap between Central Cass and DLB isn't as wide as you'd think because pitching is the great equalizer. Thompson also had a very good team with a lot of returners. Heart River has one of the best pitchers in the state. Never know!

Not sure how that idea about regions popped into my head. But I'll stick with Central Cass way out in front. The state championship game was a pretty good indicator of the difference between CC and DLB, and I don't think it got any closer since.

The east will be filled in with the usual suspects. I'd expect CC, Kindred, and Thompson to be the state qualifiers with HCV and Grafton favored for the other slot and Northern Cass, and MPCG making it interesting.

Good to see some more teams starting programs this year!

I thought Grafton lost a huge senior class? I would also throw Hankinson in there. They have had pretty young teams the last two years.

With DLB the clear favorite in the West, what are some other teams to watch for potential state tournament teams? With Velva gaining the two Passa girls, does it make them a contender? Wilton-Wing has been competitive in years past, how do they fair this year?

This is the first score I've seen so far. Some games are rescheduled because of field conditions.

DLB takes on both Central Cass and Thompson April 26th and 27th in Casselton. Bishop Ryan, Heart River, Stanley, Kindred, Watford City, and Velva are out there too from what I've seen on the NDHSAA schedule page.

Looks like quite the invitational with many of the would-be state contenders involved. Could be some interesting games to take in.

Minot Ryan beat Stanley 42-2.

Oh my.

That is the type of score coaches have been fired or forced to resign for in other sports around the country.

Sounds like Stanley was really short handed, a couple injuries and lots of walks led to the game getting out of hand

I think all of us understand being short handed, wild pitching, and injuries. I just still believe as a head coach, you never want to embarrass a school that bad. Minot Ryan may not have ran it up on purpose, but that score doesn't sit well with me. That being said, I would have this opinion if it was any other school as well.

What if I told you Stanley walked batters?

BR 2 3 8 15 14 - 42
S 2 0 0 0 0 - 2

Stanley SP got hurt at start of 3rd inning; BR had 27 hits, 24 walks taken, 5 errors on Stanley (and 10+ passed balls). Source said BR held up athletes from taking extra bases it just ballooned quickly with injuries and JV athletes having to play more than usual.

I'll never question a coach's ethics unless I hear about how a score got out of hand and even then most of the time I don't believe it. From what I've heard so far I see nothing wrong. How much different does one feel if the game is 28-2? It hurt Stanley that they were the home team and Ryan got to bat in the 5th inning.

It's softball. You can't tell kids to make outs on purpose.

Agreed, the final score doesn't determine if someone "ran it up" on another team, how they got there is what matters and it sounds like this was just one of those games with the walks, passed balls, errors, etc...

You can, though, and you can do it in a quick and tasteful way without ruining kids' stats. You can leave the base early with runners on. It's not an unknown rule and it's a common way for teams in softball to keep the game moving along so that scores like this don't happen.

You're right. I had never thought of that before. I coached SB 5 years and never saw this. I never saw 42-2 either.

I think this game said more about Hankinson than it did about Central Cass. I feel the Pirates have looked very good at times over the past two years. They struggled with injuries and consistency (as many young teams do). I look for them to be an absolute contender to get to state. To me, it's Central Case, Kindred, H-CV, Hankinson, and Northern Cass from the south and Thompson and MPCG from the North that are the main contenders for four state tournament spots.
