2019 'underdogs' -- Devils Lake & Jamestown

I usually don't pay any attention to the Class A tournament, but this year I will be cheering loudly for Jamestown boys and Devils Lake girls. You can't really call them 'underdogs' with the seasons they had this year, but it certainly isn't often that they have such a good chance to win it all.

I agree 100% with the above post. It's becoming rarer for these smaller towns to even make the state tournament, so they'll be receiving my support as well.

You’ve got Wahpeton’s boys and Williston’s girls in the field as well

The Jamestown boys should win the whole thing. They are talented at every position and extremely deep. I think Skunberg and Walters will lead them to the championship.

The Devils Lake girls will have an uphill battle. They will have to pull off 2 huge upsets to win state. I see Mandan knocking them off and giving us another Century/Mandan rematch.

Have the DL girls ever won the EDC prior to this season?

Up until 2004 season (that's as far as I've gotten)...no; in 2009 they were EDC runner up to Fargo South. Devils Lake placed 2nd at State in 2007 (losing to Mandan after entering as the EDC's 3rd Seed). They are Class A Champions in 1981, 1984 & 1987 so it's possible one of those years they were EDC champs.

EDIT:
1981 - North Star Region Champs over Langdon 66-56
1984 - North Star Region Champs over Grafton 69-30
1987 - North Star Region Runner Up (Grafton def. DL 46-45; DL won Challenge game over VC 64-30 to advance to State)

Maybe only one upset now. Sheyenne beat Mandan by 14.

Very true, great win for West Fargo Sheyenne. Looks like it should be Century vs. Devils Lake for the championship. But they both need to take care of business tomorrow, that's why they play the games.

well, happy to see that we got one 'small-town' win, anyway. Devils Lake played Bis closer than anyone else all season, but couldn't quite pull it off.

Don't know that I would call a Devils Lake win over Mandan an upset, much less a "huge upset," as Sheyenne beat Mandan by 14 and Devils Lake beat Sheyenne thrice this season by margins of 30, 17, and 23 (a game in which they once led by as much as 36). Not to mention the fact that DL lost to Century by 8, a week after Mandan got blown out by Century by 29.

Yep, DL was the 2nd best team in the state IMO.

Well done on picking the Jays. To go undefeated isn’t easy and they did it. Obviously Walters and Skunberg were the main 2 but it takes team to win it all
