Hey Run, do you know the criteria used to seed the top 5 teams for the State tourney once Regional champs are crowned? Do they use QRF, polling, gut instinct, other? Or a combination of all those?

Coaches rank the teams (not their own)...Best & Worst rankings thrown out and the others are averaged.

No clue on what system the coaches will use...lots of systems to use to rank IMO.

Region 5 -- one team at .500 and 4 teams BELOW .500 (with 3 significantly below .500). This is one instance where we should be glad that there is a private school in the mix, otherwise this region could end up being totally embarrassed at the state tournament.

Potential for a D9 sweep on Monday! Underwood/Grant County will be closest first round matchup

I don't think they be embarrassed. I think they'd be glad it's them and not Shiloh. Need either a super region format or a 3 class system.

My question is how many times did Fargo Oak Grove, Bishop Ryan & Dickinson Trinity send both boys & girls the same year to state?

Since 1990
Oak Grove is once (1999-2000) - OG GBB has only been to State twice
Bishop Ryan is once (1993-1994)
Dickinson Trinity is multiple times (check each ‘Past Champions’ topics to compare)

And with Shiloh Christian if their boys win the region again this will be the 3rd time since 2012. That they send both to state. The reason region 5 is weak is because we aren't located in a big city like Bismarck. Shiloh gets kids from Bismarck High, Century, Legacy, & St. Mary's. Yeah their not eligible to play yet. But when they do it seems like their unbeatable every year. I don't see Trinity, Ryan, or Oak Grove sending both their teams to state if not every year. Maybe every other year. Where as teams like Flasher, Grant County, Garrison, Underwood, Turtle Lake-M-M. & New Salem-Almont just to name a few. Their was a discussion on one of these topics about. Teams from district 10 not wanting to schedule Shiloh. I can see why. People may call this a weak region but to me its not. These teams play hard during the season whether their 17-2 or 4-16. But when they meet these guys in the tournament it seems like they already know the outcome. Like I it seems like they getting favored too much.

And one other thing too me their is no weak or strong region I think these regions need to be balanced more like I said in the above post. A 3 class system or a region format otherwise this trend is going to continue.

i think we need to do one of the following ideas. and yes I'm crying about this again this year haha.

Idea #1
Copy what the NCAA tourney is but only have 32 teams make the " State Class B Playoffs".
Have everyone go back to Districts win your district you get an auto bid into the playoffs. just like a Conf Champ in NCAA's. We then take 16 At Large bids based on RPI/ Computer Rankings. Then we seed all 32 teams 1-32 based on the RPI/ computer rankings. Have 4 sites for games Bismarck, Minot. Fargo and Grand Forks host. have 4 games on Friday and 2 games Saturday to determine the state qualifiers. Could even call it regionals just like NCAA's ( North, South, East, West, North East, South East, South West & North East. ) Highest seeds so the 1-8 seed get to pick their site for games Example would be if a 16 seed upsets the 1 in the qualifier the 16 seed continues in that spot for state . The rest of the teams that fall in that group of 4 travel to where ever they highest seed picks. Then when you get the 8 state qualifiers you don't reseed if their is an upset. At state you get 3 games just as you do now. I feel this is a True state playoffs and you will get the best 8 teams dueling it out.

Idea #2
Same as above just everyone does a Super Regional . 8 Auto qualifiers and 24 at large bids

We can't get the State to move forward with 3 classes...I doubt that this would catch on with them either. I like the concept and have tinkered with this for fun before...sort of (Idea #1). So Idea #2 would be Top 4 teams make the tournament essentially.

The State's argument will be the time to do all of this and the amount of games being played in a short period of time...it's a good talking point though.

For the teams that play Districts now it would actually be one less game only need to win 2 games to advance to state vs regional play now is 3. Could have the regionals the Friday and Saturday before the State tourney. But i do agree the NDHSAA is stuck in its old ways they wont change. Unfortunately i think a lot of people would like this format.

The whole state needs to cut out these district tournament and get to the big region play. Let the regular season count. If you have the top team in the state in your district.... you should only have to beat them once. Not twice.

Region 2 will be fun to follow with the likes of Thompson, H-CV, and Grafton duking it out for the title. My hunch is that Thompson will prevail this year, leaving the second-best team in ND Class B hoops at home for the state tourney! Regarding Region 7, Trinity and Beulah are the favorites on paper, but just barely this year. Arguably, any one of the top-six seeds could string together three wins next week and advance on to state. Two potentially competitive quarterfinal-round matchups to watch are Hazen v. Mott-Regent and Bowman County taking on Glen Ullin-Hebron. I tempted to give Trinity an edge among the contenders, as the Titans are tough to beat on their home floor!

Just copy South Dakota. Have a "sweet 16". Instead of playing a region championship, the last 16 teams are seeded based on their regular season seed point system.

i dont mind the Sweet 16 idea other than the fact that you would still get weaker teams playing in the sweet 16. example is region 5. Shiloh who i feel is a legit top 5 team would go yes but no one else in the region would be within 25-30 points of them. to where if we took 32 teams i think it would make for stiff competition. Either way im all in favor of change of some sorts!
