Anyone else a little surprised Four Winds-Minnewaukan isn't a hair higher? That was an awfully impressive win over Grafton. The nice thing about Four Winds-Minnewaukan is that we will find out in a hurry if they are legit or not. Props to Rick Smith for putting together the toughest schedule in the state no matter if his team is #1 in the state or unranked.

Wow. You're not kidding about a tough schedule for Four Winds!

Granted it's early but their out of Region schedule includes the following teams and their current Poll ranking:
#2 Thompson
#3 Dickinson Trinity
#4 HCV
#9 Rugby
(RV) Grafton

Reminds me of Denny Crum at Louisville in the 1980's. His philosphy was play a tough schedule because even if it doesn't pay off in the Polls it pays off at the end of the year come tourney time.

Sounds like they must have the same philosophy. Langdon, Dickinson Trinity, Minot Ryan, Carrington and Four Winds are all non-region games. That's a tough road. Should strengthen them for the post-season.

Having a tough schedule is great, all of the teams that play those tough schedules always know they are going to be in the hunt year in and year out (which is awesome for them) . Some teams try and schedule other teams knowing it might be their only win of the year. Just depends on who you are.

There are several teams out there who have 'tough' schedules this year. Tough non-region schedules help teams prepare for the most important stretch of the season.

I believe FW-M also plays #7 Shiloh, Beulah, Oak Grove, New Rockford-Sheyenne, to name a few. A very tough schedule, indeed.

And Langdon-Edmore-Munich. And Rugby. The schedule is stacked.

I wouldn't go that far. Grafton lost some key players to graduation. They have the two big guys, but the other 3 players need some varsity experience.

Central Cass plays Thompson, Grafton, Oak Grove and New Rockford before New Years, followed by Carrington, Richland, Kindred, Enderlin and Hillsboro/CV in January. 5 top 10s and 4 RVs.

I agree that getting out and scheduling a tough schedule is imperative to being ready for a post season run. I do believe this is easier for the larger schools who will have solid numbers and teams year in and year out. For the smaller schools that will have short cycles of where they can compete at the highest level, it is difficult to drop schools knowing that the following year will once again be a rebuilding year. Once you drop a team for your schedule, it is difficult to get them back on once the top teams do not want to play you again.

FW-M going to move to 1? Pretty impressive start to the season playing a grueling schedule. Guessing Thompson will probably stay 1 as they have had some quality wins too and also H-CV had big win as well.

I think FWM will jump to #2 with Thompson & HCV at 1 & 3...Rugby will likely move into Top 5 as well. Question is... how far will DT drop

How could you move anyone above Thompson right now ?
It is a little harder to motivate kids I guess because they’ve been pampered so much. We’re in the trophy generation, give ‘em a trophy for 23rd place, make ‘em feel good. Make mom and dad feel good.” Tom Izzo, Michigan State Basketball

Well, if you put merit into QRF, RPI, Computer Ranking, etc., IMHO FW-M is ahead of Thompson. That's how. Just brought it up for discussion purposes as it has been very slow on here for this time of year.

I'm sure you are correct and tend to agree with you. However RockNRoll brings up a legitimate point. Just because Thompson starts out as early season number 1, who's to say the pollsters knew early on that there weren't other teams better?

I don't see a majority of the 9 who voted for Thompson in the last poll to switch over to FWM. However, I think it will be very close 1-2 voting this week. Both teams have played tough schedules and done well. They are both deserving to be at the top.

QRF was last week (Thompson got two big wins...FWM got one) and doesn’t count out-of-state games
KMAV rankings and RPI also doesn’t count out-of-state games

These are a few variables that do not give a complete quantitative representation to the rankings.

But who really cares what your rank is now...it only matters what your rank is in mid-March!

Well, if people didn't care, I guess we wouldn't have polls. :D Honestly, just brought it up to get some discussion going on basketball. Miss hearing how things are stacking up across the state. This site has always been my go to for bb information in high school.
