B Historian wrote:I have compiled the final AP Class B poll information for every season going back to 1969-70. A few interesting things about the poll I thought I would share:
-It's good to be #1: The top-ranked team has appeared in the state tournament 38 times in 49 seasons (77.5%), made the championship game 26 times (53%) and won 15 titles (30.6%). Only two times in 49 years has the #1 team not made at least the regional semifinals: In 1972, New England St. Mary's lost the district title game by one point to 8th-ranked Scranton and did not advance to the regional. In 1982 Cando lost 57-56 to eventual state runner-up Edmore in the first round of the R3 tournament.
-Only two teams, North Star from 2010-12 and Four Winds-Minnewaukan from 2015-17 have been the top-ranked team in the final poll three seasons in a row. Four teams have done it in back to back years: Larimore 1978-79, Glen Ullin 1986-87, Langdon 1990-91 and May-Port-CG in 1996-97. Neither of those Langdon teams made the state tournament.
-The #3 ranking has the second most state appearances with 30. However, only one 3rd-ranked team has ever won the state title (Leeds-1999).
-43 of the last 49 state champions have been ranked. 35 of those champions were ranked in the top five. The six state champions that weren't ranked are Wyndmere (1971), Mayville-Portland (1972), Bisbee-Egeland (1989), Standing Rock (1998), North Border (2001) and Milnor (2013). Of those six teams, Bisbee-Egeland, Standing Rock and Milnor did not receive any votes in the final poll.
-Between 1971 and 1992 Hillsboro was ranked or receiving votes each year except 1978 when the Burros went 10-12 and 1987 when they went 16-7.
-In the last 49 years there have been no state tournament where all eight teams were ranked. There have been seven ranked teams twice, in 1984 and 1992. Only one ranked team appeared in the state tournament in 1982. Two ranked teams appeared in 1972, 1978, 1989 and 2014.
-In 49 years there have been 208 ranked teams appearing in the state tournament, an average of just over 4 per season.
These are the most final poll appearances by school since 1970. In parentheses is the number of times the school was ranked first:
Hillsboro 22 (5)
Mayville-Portland 18 (5)
Dickinson Trinity 16 (2)
Beulah 16 (1)

If you are counting North Star/Cando you should also be counting Bisbee- Engeland ( thats techincally apart of that co-op and they won state in 89) just goes to show you how really successful that program and area has been in Basketball. With them and FW's trading blow for blow. Was kind of refreshing seeing someone like St John to come into the mix.
ndlionsfan wrote:You also have to look at Wolford, Leeds, Minnewaukan, and Munich in that area. A lot of successful runs and programs in basketball within a small radius of towns.

Absolutely. If you look at the history of Class B basketball Traill County is the only area of the state that is stronger. You also have Alsen in the area, which dominated Class C in the late 60's. There are several small towns within 30 minutes of Cando that have been very successful over the years.

I was at the 82' Edmore beats Cando game
I believe Todd Trudel had over 30 points in that game and the Cubs still lost. He was an outstanding player. It's also interesting that Edmore made three straight state tournaments and played in two title games without being ranked. They were well coached and always seem to play their best ball at tournament time.was the 1977 Epping team ranked
Epping was ranked sixth that season, behind Hillsboro, Devils Lake St. Mary's, Larimore, Minnewaukan and Beulah. Beulah beat Epping 63-50 in Beulah in the third game of the season which was Epping's only loss coming into the title game. Epping beat Beulah 50-45 in the regional semifinals that year.

Yes Todd was a machine....he played at Valley City State ......when he was a freshman I think Linden Hochstedtler (spelling) from Wolford was a jr or sr @ VCS
a shadowed team of the 1977 State Class B was Wing (finished 3rd) just because of all the hype of the Hills vs Epp game
I remember liking watching Wing (probably smaller than Epping)
do you know if any Wing players went on or have kids that were successful in the Sport ?
and was it Hills or Epping who beat them in the semis?

Todd ('82) played 2 years at Lake Region before going to VC. Lyndon Hochstetler ('80) played 2 years at Lake Region before going to Mayville. Rollie Hochstetler ('78?), Lyndon's older brother, played at VC, but not sure if he was still there when Todd transferred.

thank you!, was doing some research and yes saw they must have transferred, I should have know that too, forgot it was Rollie!
was fairly common that VCS picked up JUCO transfers.........Greg Morlock (munich) and Paul Ostby (clearwater mn) went there after there 2 years at UMC Crookston

Epping over Wing 61-56.
Hillsboro over Minnewauken 71-63 in the other semi-final.

I remember Wing (now that you say it) did return in 1978, so they must have been a younger team in 77'
lived on the farm then and got 3 TV channels....but nobody missed the "B"

Wing lost three starters off the '77 team, including Perry Smith, who led the state tournament in scoring that year. Wing was one of those small towns that really excelled at basketball in the 60's and 70's. They were somehow able to reload every year despite only have around 70 kids in the school. Wing played in four straight region title games from '75 to '78 and also made it that far in '64, '66 and '71. Pretty good for such a small school that had been Class C prior to 1964.
