What does a 3 class system accomplish?

Great post. However, let me know how you feel in 3 years if you can't get by Oak Grove. Not saying you won't, but many small towns with once in a generation talent don't have depth to compete with these teams. 1 night, maybe 2, but the 3rd night of tourney time is where it happens. Depth is crucial. Wish you the best and hope you make it happen.

Looking forward to the next 3-5 years of Enderlin Eagles Basketball. I did not make it to last nights game, but they lost to the #10 Maple Valley Raiders by 12 at Raiders Home court. The Eagles are rebuilding and are a very young squad, starting an 8th grader Joe Hurlburt(6'6) who is probably going to easily surpass his brother Grahams accomplishments...oh and he has a twin brother Gus(6'5) who is also dressing Varsity. Along with some talented Juniors like Chance Bye and Cam Yantis, sophomore Austin Glarum and few freshman like Dawson Lemna...I think they will be the team to beat from Region 1 in years to come. They return next year with the same starting 5, and only graduating 1 senior this year 2018. Their JV has been beating up on the competition..and yes I realize that isn't always going to continue on going forward...but they have some serious talent coming up..even down into 6th grade.... Coach Kraft has what it takes to make champions out of these boys. I guess we will see. No matter what, it will make for some great basketball in E-town....Go Eagles !!

How is Maple Valley rated number 10 in the state ?
Is it cause they are in region 1 , cause there are 6-0, the 6 teams they have beatin have a combined record of 11 Ws and 31 Ls

It is because they are a pretty good team. You can only play your schedule.

Take Bishop Ryan, they are ranked number one. If you take Thompson off there schedule, their victories have come vs teams with a total of 11 wins. Does that take away from their team???

Maple Valley being 10th is no surprise at all. Most of their team is back from last year, and they have an outstanding shooting guard in Hunter Smith. He didn't get a lot of recognition in The Hoopster, but he's definitely All-State talent. Region 1 has 4 very good teams in W/L, Richland, OG, & Maple Valley and I'd be shocked if any of these 4 teams lose to any other Region 1 opponents this year.

While I would love to see the 3 class system, the NDHSAA would never put in that "private schools have to play in a certain class" because they would be afraid of the lawsuit. I would be willing to be that some private schools would opt up, and some wouldn't, just how some public schools opt up in the football plan, and some don't. As far as the polls go, it's early, but I think you would be hard pressed to convince me that 10 teams in the state are better than Bottineau.

Well put d_fense. I agree with UNDSiouxfan.
I wasn't at the game but from what I am hearing, Maple Valley was a little off their game.
And as far as the Hoopster, I never have put too much into that. Over the years, they have left out so
many good athletes and have had so many mistakes. And, yes, Smith should of definitely been recognized in this year's Hoopster.

Why would you take a team's win total? Ryan beat so with Thompson's wins that makes 18 better then 11.
All I'm saying is who did they beat to have them rated ?
As I looked over there schedule and it isn't impressive I agree Bottineau should be rated over maple valley imo

Would say Bottineau, MLS and ORCS are being overlooked. If it were not for Ryan anyone of these teams could go to state(and i guess they still might). Scrappy DLB,Rugby and Velva teams also. Region 6 is tough.

Why would you look at who a team plays, particularly early in the year? I struggle holding wins against a team. If you are going to hold wins against teams, what do you do with wins vs region 8 teams. Looking back their champions have finished 7th in state, 8th in state, 6th in state, and 8th in state the last 4 years. Do you discount wins vs region 8 teams?

I go back to MV's team last year. Look at what they lost (very little) in a very tough region that was hit hard by graduation last year, who coaches them (one of the best coaches in a region with many), and if they put in time over the summer.

There is no question I am a region 1 fan. I admit the region is down this year. OG isn't what they typically are. MV, Richland, and WL are all just as good as OG this season. And despite being "down" this year OG has beat Beulah, DT, and Shiloh.

A common complaint about the polls is typically, "don't the voters ever watch a game". I agree that seems to sometimes be an issue. In the case of MV being ranked, I think it shows that some of the voters are putting in some work and actually checking to see who a team has back and how they stack up.

My 2 cents

A team can only play who's on their schedule. There are some teams that, because of their location, can only play certain teams during the year. Those teams on the eastern half of the state have much more selection to choose from with who they can schedule year after year. Western teams kinda have to play who's out there unless you want to travel 3+ hours for out of region games when most times you're traveling 1.5+ hours one way to play regional teams.

Most schools schedule the same teams each year...plus R1 you only get 8 non-conference games (20 total) and in some cases only 5 as they are obligated to a County/Conference Season Tourney (as MV is)

plus it is hard for small schools to schedule harder teams, normally the bigger schools who are usually competitive want to play some competition, plus you need the money, like oak grove can travel out west to play good competition. Heard through grape vine that Richland and Hillsboro are playing next year. Does make a difference if your team is good.

Have you ever played at game in 4winds? Great home court advantage! They also have got healthy with 3 starters now back. Plus their losses are to some quality teams.

Doug Yankton and Dedrick Robertson for Fwm were out with knee injury’s. Made a return against linton on dec 29th and fwm been on a 6 game win streak since. Can you imagine if this team is healthy and had Charlie black and Bronson Walter playing(6’9 freshman).
Fwm shot lights out lastnight. Hillsboro played a 1-3-1 after for winds started the game 13-3 when Hillsboro was man to man.
I see they go into district play but finish the season out with 3 great games before tournament play. Thompson,Carrington and Shiloh. I think these games will help better a young scrappy team for tournament time.

Well Schwab, I think you were on to something. With them taking down #1 Bishop Ryan tonight I think it shows everyone you are probably correct. I've watched Bottineau this year and agree that they are a very solid team. Their guard play is very good and they have a couple quality big guys, with one being very athletic. Also, big Max Henry fan, he's a true point guard and everyone on Bottineau sure benefits from him
