Is it cause they are in region 1 , cause there are 6-0, the 6 teams they have beatin have a combined record of 11 Ws and 31 Ls
It is because they are a pretty good team. You can only play your schedule.
Take Bishop Ryan, they are ranked number one. If you take Thompson off there schedule, their victories have come vs teams with a total of 11 wins. Does that take away from their team???
Why would you take a team's win total? Ryan beat so with Thompson's wins that makes 18 better then 11.
All I'm saying is who did they beat to have them rated ?
As I looked over there schedule and it isn't impressive I agree Bottineau should be rated over maple valley imo
Why would you look at who a team plays, particularly early in the year? I struggle holding wins against a team. If you are going to hold wins against teams, what do you do with wins vs region 8 teams. Looking back their champions have finished 7th in state, 8th in state, 6th in state, and 8th in state the last 4 years. Do you discount wins vs region 8 teams?
I go back to MV's team last year. Look at what they lost (very little) in a very tough region that was hit hard by graduation last year, who coaches them (one of the best coaches in a region with many), and if they put in time over the summer.
There is no question I am a region 1 fan. I admit the region is down this year. OG isn't what they typically are. MV, Richland, and WL are all just as good as OG this season. And despite being "down" this year OG has beat Beulah, DT, and Shiloh.
A common complaint about the polls is typically, "don't the voters ever watch a game". I agree that seems to sometimes be an issue. In the case of MV being ranked, I think it shows that some of the voters are putting in some work and actually checking to see who a team has back and how they stack up.
My 2 cents
