New Regions for 2017

The teams in 9 Man

Re: New Regions for 2017

If Killdeer opts up Shiloh is first in line to move back to 9-man. I'm not sure if Shiloh wants any part of Hazen, Trinity or Beulah. With that being said, if they decide to stay class A, it would be a natural fit for Killdeer being placed in Region 4, with Bowman going back to 9-man. Region 4 then would clearly be the toughest class A region with Hazen, Beulah, Trinity, Killdeer and Shiloh.

You can opt up, you can't opt down. If enrollment numbers say you are supposed to be 11-man, that's where you go.

The school with the lowest number of boys has the first option to move down if someone opts to move up. In 2017-2018 there will be no more than 32 class A teams and no more than 32 9-man teams.

Sorry, my bad. You're right. 14 AAA. 10 AA. 32 A. The rest play 9-man. You're correct a team can't opt down, but if a team wants to opt up, the school with the lowest enrollment has the first option to move down. If nobody wants to move down, then the school that requested to move up gets denied.

It's interesting that some schools are hesitant to move to 11-man and others with less students will move up. Is it a tradition thing or they maybe like to test themselves. 9-man isn't necessarily easier than 11-man. There have been teams that it takes a while to get the hang of 9-man when moving down. All depends if you get put into a tough region or not.

I never wanted our team to move to 9 man because 11 man was all I ever knew. after having the town my kids go to school in playing in 9 man, looking back i think i would have rather played 9 man in my hometown. i think it's more exciting. there isn't much difference from what I've seen except i could see how speed is more important in 9 man than it is in 11 man. not quite the difference i thought there would be.

Many teams that are competitive year in and year out at 11 man but are always on the bubble of going up or down based on enrollment chose to stay 11 man for continuity sake as far as coaching from the little kids all the way through high school. Just my observation.

With New England joining Mott-Regent next year, what is the composition of the kids joining Mott-Regent? I can't tell which kids are from Trinity or New England. Is there any speed and talent, strong in any particular positions? Just curious

as of right now not many kids from NE play for trinity (not sure on exact number, but I don't think it's more than 8 ). Next year from what I was told they would have 20+ kids out for football in the co-op with MR

EDIT: Just went and looked at Trinity's roster on NDHSAA and I recognize 3 names as being New England kids.

Thanks, 20+ is a significant number up from 8 when it comes to 9-man rosters.

Maybe they could find some takers there.?.?.?.

Agreed with Region 3 for class A. Velva will win that region every year, and Kenmare will take second. Don't know that any team there will even compete with them. Bishop Ryan could jump into that region and make it more competitive same with Killdeer. Maybe Lewis&Clark and DLB form a Coop to field a more competitive team.

I think Region 4 will be the toughest region in Class A. Region 2 would be next. Region 1 could give region 3 a run to be the worst region. No real powerhouse programs there either.

Oak Grove- has been rated in state this year
Hillsboro- 2A will compete in A ball currently receiving votes in 2A
Kindred- currently 4th in 2A
Milnor- North Sargent- just beat Oak Grove is 4-2 with losses to NC who is receiving votes and Park River by 5 and 6 respectively
Ellendale- currently receiving votes in A ball
Lisbon- 2A will compete better in 2A has a very strong underclass group coming up
Northern Cass Recieving votes
Enderlin- 2A will compete better in A

Tell me again why this is the weakest region?

Oak Grove- 2010-2016 10-44, last 3 years 8-14 (as of week 5)
Hillsboro- 2010-2016 35-21, last 3 years 10-10 (as of week 5)
Kindred- 2010-2016 29-35, last 3 years 10-13 (as of week 5)
Milnor- 2010-2016 41-26, last 3 years 9-12 (as of week 5)
Ellendale- 2010-2016 11-47, last 3 years 6-15 (as of week 5)
Lisbon- 2010-2016 21-39, last 3 years 1-21 (as of week 5)
Northern Cass- 2010-2016 28-32, last 3 years 14-8 (as of week 5)
Enderlin- 2010-2016 27-33, last 3 years 5-17 (as of week 5)

202-277 42% winning percentage since 2010 as a region. 63-110 36% winning percentage over the last 3 years as a region. 2 teams have a winning percentage over .500 since 2010, 1 team is over .500 over the last 3 years.

The Reality is that there is not a good program in the bunch.
Oak Grove, last playoff appearance 2008, TRASH.
Hillsboro, Won State in 2008, 8 straight playoff appearances from 2005-2012, last playoff in 2014. Only Program that has won anything.
Kindred, made the playoffs 3 times since 2010 in AA, which doesn't say much, two were 1st round exits getting beat soundly.Very Below Average program.
Milnor, went the the playoffs 8 years straight from 2006-2013, two state title appearances. Solid Program, second best in the region. Last 3 years has been down.
Ellendale, 2010-2012 3 straight playoff appearances. Have been garbage since their 1st round exit to Park River in 2012.
Lisbon, Since 2010 2 first round exits from the playoffs, did appear in the state title in 2007 and lost. They have been garbage the last 3 years, one of the worst teams in the state the last 3 years.
Northern Cass, Since 2010 have made the playoffs twice. Have been the best program in this region over the last years.
Enderlin, since 2010 3 playoff appearances in a row, averaging about 2 wins a year since then.

I wasn't aware that we were ranking the future based off the past??? I appreciate the effort you put into compiling all those statistics. But lets look more realistically at what the future holds. Not basing it off past accomplishments.

The Reallity is that there is not a good program in the bunch. funny but you contradict this statement by calling Milnor (also known as Milnor - North Sargent. And starting next season including Sargent Central) a solid program.

Oak Grove, last playoff appearance 2008, TRASH. Except they have turned a corner and have hired a solid coach that has them going in the right direction.

Hillsboro, Won State in 2008, 8 straight playoff appearances from 2005-2012, last playoff in 2014. Only Program that has won anything. Has bounced from 9 man to 11 man 1A and 2A. Now may finally have a home and find an identity.

Kindred, made the playoffs 3 times since 2010 in AA, which doesn't say much, two were 1st round exits getting beat soundly.Very Below Average program. Hard to say when they are competing against teams much larger than them

Milnor, went the the playoffs 8 years straight from 2006-2013, two state title appearances. Solid Program, second best in the region. Last 3 years has been down. During this time M-NS has been opting up to stay 11 man even with minimal numbers. The addition of Sargent Central should aliviate that issue.

Ellendale, 2010-2012 3 straight playoff appearances. Have been garbage since their 1st round exit to Park River in 2012. This program has had its growing pains buthave turned the corner will be competative.

Lisbon, Since 2010 2 first round exits from the playoffs, did appear in the state title in 2007 and lost. They have been garbage the last 3 years, one of the worst teams in the state the last 3 years. Have had a numbers issue mostly from coaching changes and getting their asses handed to them by the big boys. Strong classes coming up will compete in 1A

Northern Cass, Since 2010 have made the playoffs twice. Have been the best program in this region over the last years. Solid program drawing allot of kids from the Fargo fringes. Will continue to be towards the top.

Enderlin, since 2010 3 playoff appearances in a row, averaging about 2 wins a year since then. Honestly dont know much here but the move to smaller school can do nothing but help.

These are my humble opinions, we all have the right to our own. Looking forward to finding out how it all shakes out,

Gentleman,
Let's remember a couple
Points about your arguments.
First- past results don't mean anything for the future. Teams miss TE playoffs right after winning the state title and on the other hand some teams make the playoffs or even make a run in them after having a terrible season.

Second and more importantly. Let's remember regardless of what you think of these teams there are a bunch of great young men playing for these teams and working their butts off to be successful. They don't care what their records are or have been. They have great pride in their schools and teams

Exactly what I am saying the past is just that and in the future I see region 1 being very competitive. And the statement that these are trash, or poor programs is what I took offense too. These are young men and they work hard win or lose, give me Friday night lights and a hometown team any day of the week. Thank you for seeing that

So with this logic I think I can say that region 6 could be one of the more competitive regions in 9 man next season. Ray has a good group of young kids, Divide has one of the best athletes in the state, Parshall is having good numbers. MLS has established their program. Surrey is in a down cycle and will come back up. Tioga will continue to build.

Cmplx6,
Thanks for the info, but it really means nothing unless you put into the context of the regions you are comparing it to. Does that make sense? I'm sure it took some time to put together. Could you do the same for region 4? Where did you get the info to put your post together? I don't doubt your info, would just like to know where to find old team stats like that. Thanks again for your post. Even if I do disagree :)

Great research.

I'm guessing you are combining the Edgeley Kulm and Ellendale 9 man teams under "Ellendale" as the last time an Ellendale football team made the playoffs was in 2009 where they lost in the first round to Hillsboro. The next year, EK beat Ellendale in the last game of the year to advance to the playoffs. They then played one more year separately in 9 man in 2011, neither team made the playoffs that year, the two teams then combined in 11A beginning in 2012, where they went 0 and 16 the first 2 years before going 3 and 5 and missing the playoffs by a FG in the waning seconds of their last game last year.
We plan and God laughs.
