THe best overall girls sports programs in North Dakota?

Postby NDSportsFan » Wed Apr 09, 2014 9:45 am

I received a message from USATODAY high school sports. They are running a contest to vote on the best overall girls high school sports program in the country. They would like 5 nominations from North Dakota. Here is what they would like:

"I’m assisting USA TODAY High School Sports in selecting five active high school girls sports programs (all sports and teams) from the state of North Dakota to be included in the contest, and I would greatly appreciate you sharing your expertise by suggesting successful programs that you believe are deserving of being included. Any information you can provide would be helpful, but I have listed below the most pertinent information that I’d appreciate you providing for each high school girls sports program you nominate.

Requested Information:

Name and location of high school:

Girls sports offered by the school:

Reason(s) athletic program should be included in contest: (Past and current success experienced by specific girls sports teams, famous alumni, etc.)
"

If anyone would like to nominate a program, and include a short explanation of why, I will forward that information on to the guy from USATODAY on Friday. His deadline is Saturday. You can either post it here, or send me a private message.

Thanks.

A program nomination I can think of would be the fastpitch softball team in West Fargo. Quite a string of championships the Packers have put together over the past decade and a half. Fifteen championships in a row if I'm not mistaken - and I could be.
Somebody with a deeper knowledge of the program could probably name players that went on to college programs. Maybe to coach or promote the sport beyond high school. I don't know the details, but maybe someone reading this does.

I'll put one in.

The Minot High girls swim team.

They have won 23 state championships ( including a run of 11 straight, 5 straight, 6 straight, and the most recent in 2013).

The best alum I can think of is Dagny Knutson(who graduated in 2010). She holds almost every school and state record. At the 2008 FINA Youth World Swimming Championships, Knutson won a total of five medals, all gold.
She just missed out on qualifying for the Olympics in 2012.

Yes they have a string of Championships but softball wasn't sanctioned for many years...so I don't know of how many you can count. The string of titles is impressive though

As for programs, I think Bismarck and Bismarck Century have a strong tradition of having girls consistently competing for championship with strong numbers in various sports. The championships are an important measure of success, but having kids consistently participating in different sports shows that an athletic program is strong, and dedicated to giving kids an opportunity to compete.

Century and Bismarck may be at the top right now, but when you look at overall success, you have to look at Minot high. They have double digit championships in 3 different sports (according to Run's post).

Honestly, I was kinda surprised when I saw those numbers.

Its actually 4 different sports

The reason that its surprise is because other than Swimming & Gymnastics its been awhile for the other sports.

oh, I must have missed one. I wasn't even alive in the 80's, but they must have been the school of the 80's and 90's.
