SIOUX HOCKEY 2008-2009

Postby sportsking09 » Sun Oct 05, 2008 10:37 pm

Its that time of year again and the fighting sioux hockey tetam has opened yet another season with a 6-2 win over manitoba tonite in the exhibition game at the ralph. freshman goalie brad eidsness looked good in net but suprisingly senior aaron walski looked even better stop every shot that came his way in the 28 minutes he was in net, good core of players, the sioux could make yet another run to the frozen four, which would be the 5th year in a row

Should be a fun and interesting year, I'm always interested in how the new young guys replace the guys that have just left. I think this years team will be solid but I just don't think they will be as good as they have been the past few years. Hopefully I am proven wrong. Can't wait for the season to start.

tough loss to #9 boston university last night, 5-1 final score, this season may be worse than i was predidcting, freshman goalie eidsness did not look good and it was apparent the sioux will be in trouble this season if they do not get their goalie situation under control. on the positive side ryan duncan is the career point leader in the nation heading into the season and he is also they only player in collegiate hockey history to play two more seasons after winning the hobey baker award. hopefully the sioux can rebound this afternoon against massachusetts. UND drops to #13 in the nation. They will take on #15 Minnesota State University in MSU. Hopefully the sioux can rebound after last weeks tough loss and win 2 on the road

Yes Sioux will struggle a bit........they need to address the goalie issue. But i have faith in Hakstal, he always has his team ready when it counts.

Just a fun fact:

Over the past 3 years the Sioux have definately been a second half team.

Pre Xmas record: 27-23-4
Post Xmas record: 54-16-7

not too shabby

of all people, i figured you wouldnt be a bandwagon jumper.
i havent watched a game yet, but considering its early still, they probably havent been able to work out all the kinks in the system yet. im sure some of the lines will be juggled in the near future if the struggles continue and some of the younger guys are going to get more ice time. maybe if they wouldnt have a mass exodus of players leaving for the nhl every year they wouldnt start out on a bad note.

im not a bandwagon jumper. i am just saying they will not do as good as last year. dont get me wrong i am one of the biggest sioux fans their is, but if they dont get their goalie chances figured out, they will not do very well in the wcha, especially if they are having difficulty beating msu. and to prove this might be a bad year for the sioux, if they would have lost tonites game, that would only be the 2nd time in the schoos collegiate history of starting out 0-4. but on a brighter note, UND brings home win #1 tonite against msu with a score of 4-3.

the score was actually 4-3 and vande velde scored a shorty with 8.6 left, but mankato is a pretty good hockey and lost virtually nobody off a team that finished 4th in the WCHA last year. This isnt your fathers mankato hockey team, tory jutting has done a great job down there. But back to the sioux, after watching the games their goalie and special teams are by far the biggest problems. With the new WCHA rules there are a lot more penalties, and the sioux couldnt score on a 6-3 and 5-3 this weekend. If they find someone between the pipes (I personally think Eidsness is the better choice), and can fix the special teams they could make the final five but not much more than that. They just arent that good this year.

If you look at there last few seasons, they seem to play very mediocre but then the second half of the year comes around and they seem to turn it around. All i am saying is that even though they may not look that good right now we will just have to wait and see because it may turn around

Anchorage is actually playing pretty decent so far this year. They have 8 points and are tied for 4th in the WCHA but I agree this is not one of UND's best seasons.

Painful to watch these Sioux games lately. I haven't seen the Sioux struggle so bad in years. Hopefully they can pull it together for the next half of the season.

I am surprised no one has commented on this yet. The Sioux sweep no. 3 ranked Minnesota. They totally dominated both games.

great job to the sioux!!! any every one trust me, the game was better live, i was there. the crowd was really into it (student section was HUGE!!!) and the whiteout theme went great. i think the sioux came out almost over excited and amped up and just let the gophers know it was over as soon as the ref dropped the puck, haha. again very good series and weekend for the sioux, and lets wish them the best this weekend as they travel to michigan tech.
