State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament
March 3, 4, & 5 @ Betty Engelstad Arena

Thursday March 3rd
G1 - (20-3) #2 (4) Grafton vs Kenmare (17-7) ....Grafton should win by double figures.
G2 - #3 (6) Langdon-Edmore-Munich vs Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood (RV) (21-3)...closest game maybe; flip coin. Langdon been here lots so they have edge.
G3 - (23-0) #1 (1) Kindred vs Beulah (18-5) Kindred should dominate this tournament.
G4 - (20-4) #4 (8) Shiloh Christian vs Linton HMB (9) #5 (20-3) Interesting game. Should be competitive game. Shiloh has kids who will be in their 2nd + 3rd state tournaments. Shiloh win by a handful.

#1 Kindred
#2 Grafton
#3 Shiloh
#4 Langdon
#5 Linton
#6 Mohall
#7 Beulah
#8 Kenmare

My original thought of all 8 seeds was this…I would only switch Beulah & Kenmare in the end.

I don't think anyone will challenge Kindred, except for Grafton.

Game 1: I will take Grafton by 12+ over Kenmare
Game 2: LEM over MLS by single digits
Game 3: Kindred over Beulah by 20+
Game 4: LHMB over Bismarck by 8

Here are my state tournament predictions:

Round 1:
- Grafton over Kenmare by a lot
- Langdon over MLS in a great game
- Kindred over Beulah by a lot
- Linton in a real close one that comes down to the final possession

Round 2:
- Grafton over Langdon in a two possession game (5 or less points)
- Kindred over Linton by 10

Championship:
- Kindred over Grafton in a good game that Kindred seals late in the 4th (60 to 52 final score)

Final Places:
1. Kindred
2. Grafton
3. Langdon
4. Linton
5. Shiloh
6. MLS
7. Beulah
8. Kenmare

I want to pick MLS in the 1st round, Scherr has struggled in the first round, but MLS didn't look great in the region championship game.

Scherr has been to seven straight state tournaments. I still remember when the Park River parents wanted him fired.

I don't see Kindred beating Grafton by anywhere close to 25 points. From what I recall when they played earlier this season in Kindred, Grafton was ahead at halftime. Kindred went on a nice run to start the 3rd and took a decent lead. Grafton came back and led around the 3-4 minute of the fourth quarter. Kindred came back, took a lead and held on by shooting free throws at the end.

Two things that stuck out in looking at the stats that they put out on the game cast online...
I recall Grafton shot very well from the 3pt line, something like 60%. And Kindred shot 45 free throws on the game compared to Grafton's 11. Which is a little strange, as Grafton is typically pretty aggressive in taking the ball to the hoop.

I did say an average in my defense, Kinnerd is a whole different beast than they were at the beginning of the year, I actually thought CC would role them this year but boy was I wrong, their younger kids are outstanding, assuming they have got 100% better since they played Grafton, I will say they beat Grafton by 18.

I was just going to say this. 25 ppg is still a lot. I was also going to point out what you said about Central Cass. BTW, I thought CC was the best team in the state until they lost to Kindred.

I mean 25 ppg is possible depending on what they win the opening round game by...

I think MLS has a good chance if they stay out of foul trouble. Undlin didn’t play the second quarter in region championship and Thompson sat for awhile too. Those two need to stay on the court. Undlin vs Demers in semifinals would be a fun matchup to see.

1. Kindred
2. MLS

6. Shiloh
7. LAEM
8. Beulah

Correction: I still remember when the Park River parents and administration treated him like garbage and ran him out.

Just my two cents

Curious question from a person who doesn't know much about these two teams.

Kenmare and Mohall are 34 miles apart. Hypothetically, if they were a co-op, could they have competed with the big guns from the east? That's a lot of talent in a small geographic area.

With a healthy Kenmare pg. IMO yes. Also, very tough break for MLS with the injury as well

Four pretty boring games to start the State Tourny. Hopefully the games are more competitive tomorrow.

Thoughts after day one:

1) Oof.

2) I guess we have to remember this isn't typical. Some Division I athletes that can dominate a game running around on day one, so we should probably take this year's first round with a grain of salt.

3) It's one thing for a private school to make it in. It's another when they have a transfer as well. Don't blame me for saying it. It hung over the Linton-HMB vs Bismarck Shiloh Christian game last night. That being said, Linton was forced into 32 3s, and that defensive pressure by Shiloh was a huge factor.

4) Semis could be okay, then again, they may not be.

5) In response to an earlier post: Scherr struggles in the first round? Huh, I'm old enough to remember him winning a state title in Grand Forks a few years back, and getting screwed by the seeding just after that, but yeah, sounds like struggling to me, I guess.....

I think you have those years flipped around, I think they ended up playing Kindred in the first round in 2019 where a lot of people felt Kindred should have been seeded and then Langdon won it in 2020.

I do agree with your assessment of the tournament.
