So what's everyone's thoughts on the games to watch in the first round? I'm thinking North Star could have an easy game. The others could be a toss up.

I really like the field in this year's state tournament. A lot of upsets at the regional tournament prove how much parity there was across the state this season. Historically, the girls' tournaments haven't had as many upsets as the boys, so this was a fun change. Of course, the top 3 teams did make it so it's unlikely we'll have any upsets on Day 1 of the tournament, but that's why they play the games. I'm hoping for a competitive tournament with lots of close games.

Here are my predictions:

Quarterfinals:
Kindred over Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 59-46
Park River-Fordville-Lankin over Grant County 47-40
North Star over Glen Ullin-Hebron 67-43
Watford City over Our Redeemer's 49-45

Consolation Semifinals:
Grant County over Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 47-43
Our Redeemer's over Glen Ullin-Hebron 48-38

Semifinals:
Kindred over Park River-Fordville-Lankin 45-39
North Star over Watford City 51-49

7th Place: Glen Ullin-Hebron over Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 51-50
5th Place: Our Redeemer's over Grant County 57-48
3rd Place: Watford City over Park River-Fordville-Lankin 50-41
Championship: North Star over Kindred 56-46

Kindred's starters and primary players
Starters:
Mikayla Reinke Sr. Guard 5'9"
Brooke Hiatt Sr. Guard 5'6"
Madison Erickson Sr. Forward 5'9"
Kyra Braaten Sr. Guard 5'4"
Tori Braaten Jr. Guard 5'5"

Key Reserves
Jensen Odegaard Sr. Forward 5'10"
Abby Duchscherer 7th Guard 5'8"
and
Taylor Keller Jr. Forward 5'10" (some minutes to give other post players a rest or in case of foul trouble)

The rest of the roster probably won't play much until games are obviously won or lost.

Five girls average between 9 and 12 points per game.
Strengths: Of the 7 girls in the primary rotation, 5 of them can play the point, 6 can shoot and make 3's, all of them can run, and all are good defenders that make things difficult for opposing ball handlers. Also, a lot of basketball savvy and the seniors have played together since elementary.
Weakness: Lack of height, tall girls give them difficulty. Half court offense relies heavily on 3 pointers as there are no true post players. As a result, if not making 3's the offense can sputter if not creating turnovers from pressure.

Just by looking at polls/records it looks like if you were to seed the tournament 1-8, this is how the matchups would end up.

Wow. PRFL didn't look like the experienced team in that one. Congrats to Grant County.

Lived and died by the 3. 22 was what, 1-10 from 3?

Was PRFL missing some kids? They sure didn't resemble #3 team in state. So much for last year's experience too and having seniors. I am guessing something else is going on within that team -- they sure had the look of a distracted team.

On the other hand, Grant Co. took full advantage of PRFL lack of focus & intensity. Their defense was good enough & they exploited a poor shooting perimeter team. Congrats to the Coyotes!

That's why I think state b should always be in Minot or Bismarck. The casual viewer won't drive 4.5 to 6 hrs for it keep it in the middle and more come

GC surprisingly out-rebounded PRFL too, which ended up being huge. Cold outside shots (25% or so, as mentioned on the radio), with very limited second chance points was the killer for the Aggies.

Believe it or not I actually think GC was just the overall better team. They are 22-3 their skill players were very good.

I'm a NS partisan, but I think you have to admit, they are not a one-trick pony. Miller and Halverson make their open shots, and their Team D is impressive. Yeah, their guards can take chances with the tree in the middle, but probably no one will score 50 on them this year.

OK, I said I'm a NS partisan, but I have to question the wisdom of the coach. Why would she wait till 1:30 left in the game to take the starters out? These young ladies have to play 3 games in 3 days. That's tough for any athlete. She could have easily taken them out with 6 minutes left. If you gets out of hand, you put them back in. Come on, man!

100% correct, but the NDHSAA refuses to admit their mistakes by putting a basketball tournament in a football venue or that putting them on the eastern border of the state is a mistake.

Announcer said Olson from Our Redeamers has played since she was a 6th grader. That would make her an illegal player. 6th graders cannot play high school basketball.
