Luke Lorenz was the leading scorer on Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg's state runner-up boys basketball team. But what sets Lorenz apart from many top scorers is his ability to shut down opposing top guns.
The junior is one of five players who have been named to the first team of the North Dakota Class B boys high school all-state team, as selected by members of the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Joining Lorenz on the first team are seniors Zach Larson of Fargo Oak Grove, Payton Tivis of Bowman, Jaden Voth of Glen Ullin-Hebron and Jeff Smith of Hettinger.
Lorenz made his mark as a shutdown defender on a May-Port-C-G team that finished 26-2 on the strength of a defense that allowed an average of only 39.5 points a game.
"Luke takes pride in his defense," Patriots coach Dave Nelson said. "He's tireless, battling and battling and battling.
"He's long 6-foot-3 with long arms. And he plays with sheer determination. He's so versatile that we could put him on perimeter players or post players and, whoever he was guarding, they really had to work for their points."
Lorenz also paced May-Port-C-G with averages of 16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds. "Luke's more of an inside player on offense," Nelson said. "He's very good on the offensive boards, he's shifty and tough on the baseline with pull-up jump shots."
Tivis, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, was named to the all-state team for the second consecutive year. He averaged 24 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
Tivis led Bowman to the regional championship, where the team fell to eventual state-champion Dickinson Trinity.
Voth was a standout at Glen Ullin-Hebron, scoring more than 1,400 points in his career. The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 25.7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals per game. He was the District 14 senior player of the year.
Smith, a 6-1 senior guard, was the leading scorer in the state for Hettinger, averaging 27.5 points, 7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4 steals per game.
Larson, a 6-1 senior guard, led Fargo Oak Grove with 23.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals per game. He was the Region 1 senior player of the year and Oak Grove's all-time leading scorer with 1,330 points.
Second team
Area players Ethan Evenson of Hillsboro and Tony Ironheart of Four Winds are second-team all-state selections.
Evenson had a big hand in the offense of the 14-9 Burros. The senior guard averaged 18.6 points, including 82-of-186 on 3-point attempts, and 3.7 assists in an offense that averaged 44.3 points. Evenson had 1,205 career points.
Ironheart, a junior guard, was the leader in scoring (18.9 ppg) and steals (3.1) and ranked second in assists (6.2 apg) for the 27-1 Four Winds team that finished third at the state tournament.
