From the Grand Forks Herald:  http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/sports/14173538.htm

Luke Lorenz was the leading scorer on Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg's state runner-up boys basketball team. But what sets Lorenz apart from many top scorers is his ability to shut down opposing top guns.

The junior is one of five players who have been named to the first team of the North Dakota Class B boys high school all-state team, as selected by members of the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Joining Lorenz on the first team are seniors Zach Larson of Fargo Oak Grove, Payton Tivis of Bowman, Jaden Voth of Glen Ullin-Hebron and Jeff Smith of Hettinger.

Lorenz made his mark as a shutdown defender on a May-Port-C-G team that finished 26-2 on the strength of a defense that allowed an average of only 39.5 points a game.

"Luke takes pride in his defense," Patriots coach Dave Nelson said. "He's tireless, battling and battling and battling.

"He's long 6-foot-3 with long arms. And he plays with sheer determination. He's so versatile that we could put him on perimeter players or post players and, whoever he was guarding, they really had to work for their points."

Lorenz also paced May-Port-C-G with averages of 16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds. "Luke's more of an inside player on offense," Nelson said. "He's very good on the offensive boards, he's shifty and tough on the baseline with pull-up jump shots."

Tivis, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, was named to the all-state team for the second consecutive year. He averaged 24 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Tivis led Bowman to the regional championship, where the team fell to eventual state-champion Dickinson Trinity.

Voth was a standout at Glen Ullin-Hebron, scoring more than 1,400 points in his career. The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 25.7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals per game. He was the District 14 senior player of the year.

Smith, a 6-1 senior guard, was the leading scorer in the state for Hettinger, averaging 27.5 points, 7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4 steals per game.

Larson, a 6-1 senior guard, led Fargo Oak Grove with 23.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals per game. He was the Region 1 senior player of the year and Oak Grove's all-time leading scorer with 1,330 points.

Second team

Area players Ethan Evenson of Hillsboro and Tony Ironheart of Four Winds are second-team all-state selections.

Evenson had a big hand in the offense of the 14-9 Burros. The senior guard averaged 18.6 points, including 82-of-186 on 3-point attempts, and 3.7 assists in an offense that averaged 44.3 points. Evenson had 1,205 career points.

Ironheart, a junior guard, was the leader in scoring (18.9 ppg) and steals (3.1) and ranked second in assists (6.2 apg) for the 27-1 Four Winds team that finished third at the state tournament.

The rest of the second team:

• Calvin Kraft, Central Cass: The 6-3 senior wing averaged 22 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals. A second-team all-state player last year, Kraft finished his career with 1,728 points.

• Ross Florhaug, Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal: The senior forward averaged 21 points per game, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

• Jarvis Bearstail, Bismarck Shiloh Christian: The 5-10 senior guard averaged 19.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while dishing 48 assists and grabbing 75 steals.

• Taylor Mau, Berthold: The District 12 player of the year averaged 25 points and seven rebounds per game while connecting on 40 percent of his shots from 3-point range.

• Landon Smith, Dickinson Trinity: The 6-3 senior forward averaged 13.5 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game while shooting 62 percent from the field for the state champions.

• Derek Benter, Divide County: The 6-8 senior center averaged 18.9 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.

• Tom Bachmeier, Bismarck Shiloh Christian: The 6-3 senior forward averaged 17 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

• Dustin Erbes, Richland: The 6-foot senior swingman averaged 15.3 points, 7 rebounds, 2.5 steals per game and shot better than 55 percent from the field.

• Derek Pauley, Bowman: The 6-4 senior center averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists per game for the Region 7 runner-ups.

• Lance Hollinger, Stanley: The senior guard averaged 22 points per game and was named Region 8 player of the year.

• Neil Packineau, Parshall: The 6-1 junior guard averaged 22 points and 4 rebounds per game while leading Parshall into the state tournament.

A good read, thanks!

Looks like Lorenz may be a Mr. Basketball candidate next year?

Rather odd that Justin Flink from Langdon, Tyler Fettig from HMB and Kellen Littlewind from Four Winds aren't included on this list....Fettig averaged 24 ppg and 14rpg.

Lorenz will definitely be a candidate for Mr. Basketball next year, he'll have a huge year his senior year cuz he'll be MPCG's only scoring threat.

Seems like the all state team leaves you shaking your head.  How does DT only get one guy on the second team, no less.  Bowman 2 players?  Shiloh 2 players?  The one player I feel got robbed was Flink from Langdon.

Good team it looks like. It'll be interesting to see the coaches views and see who gets on the lions game and see how many are the same and if there is any different players. 18 players in all there was 15 last year. Must of been a couple ties or something.

Tyler Fettig isn't all-state material. True, he did outscore alot of people but his team wasn't worthwhile, and I may add he gets all the shots up too.

Bata was a stud at state, the only one that could do anything on his team in Bismarck.

Yes, you could make arguments about a few people such as Tyler Fettig from HMB avergin 24.3 and 14 rebound which is a senior and was senior player of the year and will not get recognized but what about say Mark Bakkum from Steele-Dawson.  I didnt see him all year but i did see him at the regional tournament in Jamestown and also when he played against HMB amd he could sure shoot the ball and pass it also.  I talked to a few people about this kid and he averaged over 21 points over 8 rebounds and over 7 assists... Now that is a stat line, but i will not talk it away from the kids that got on the all state team because im sure they were also deserving of it as well.  But look for this kid next year and look in the Hoopster.

one kid to look for in the hoopster is thomas burke:drool: from bowman. This kid is outstanding. He was really the defensive stopper for the bulldogs this season and will have to step up big next season after bowman loses 3 of their starters. Thomas and Jordan Maher will be the key for them next year. Look for those two kids in the hoopster next season.
