New Co-ops for 2022-2023

Postby 19coach91 » Sat Jul 02, 2022 3:39 pm

Are there any new co-ops happening in the state for next season? I know that Rolette-Rolla are combining along with Kenmare-Bowbells and Powers Lake-Burke Central as well. I saw on NDHSAA it shows Parshall/NSP. I would assume that North Shore-Plaza is combining with Parshall?

Parshall & NS-P are for BBB only; NS-P dissolved VB coop with Berthold to have own team

Rolette & Rolla are becoming North Prairie for VB, GBB & BBB

You already have Kenmare & PL’s new coops above for VB, GBB & BBB starting this year

Grant County & Mott-Regent were together for BBB last year, GBB together this year

Also to note: Alexander & WTC dissolved coop in GBB

I know this has been discussed before, but I feel it is worth bringing up again. I think you will see more and more co-ops in the future as the smaller Class B schools get tired of being beat down by the larger Class B schools. The only place I don't see more co-ops happening is out in the southwest because of the distance between those schools. I don't want to mention names because it hasn't happened yet, but I know of more than a couple of schools who are privately looking into co-oping because they are tired of trying to compete with the big schools in their Region. A three class system would maybe end a few co-ops, but I have zero confidence in there ever being a 3 class system in ND.

some of the new coops this year are because of the lack of #s within a school

NS-P is looking at 2-4 boys, Hankinson is low in Girls #s, Burke County couldn't make it on their own anymore and split the schools of that coop to join new coops...moving to 3 classes wouldn't save these schools.

I agree that a 3rd class is needed but most of the coops being created this year are to continue opportunities for their student-athletes.

Hankinson is down to 4 HS players...looking into joining W-L or just going with a C/JV schedule

OK, not sure how you can play with four kids, but is this a couple of years problem, or is it possible Hankinson has played their last game as its own school?

Well they have JH athletes but it's going to take some time to rebuild that program. Hankinson isn't a super small town...just need to get girls re-interested in basketball
