State Championships by region since 1980

Postby tigertown35 » Fri Mar 19, 2021 11:13 pm

SO I decided to look into the history books and break state champs down by region since 1980. If somebody wants go back farther, be my guest. But I thought this was a good timeframe to start with and see which regions have won in which of the past 40 years. This is based on where the 8 regions sit today so some of the teams may have been in different regions when they won but I thought it easiest to do it this way. Anyways, here is the breakdown.

Region 1- 3 total championships since 1980
Oak Grove x2 (2000,2014)
Milnor (2013)

Region 2- 13 total championships since 1980
Hillsboro/Central Valley x3 (1981,2017,2018) (81' as just Hillsboro)
May-Port-C-G x5 (1987,1996,1997,2002,2003) (87' and 96' as just Mayville-Portland)
Edinburg (1988)
Central Valley (1993)
North Border (2001)
Grafton (2008)
Thompson (2019)

Region 3- 6 total championships since 1980
Linton x3 (1984,1985,2009)
Edgeley (1990)
Carrington x2 (1995, 2010)

Region 4- 6 total championships since 1980
Bisbee-Egeland (1989)
Munich (1992)
Leeds (1999)
New Rockford-Sheyenne (2005)
North Star (2011)
Four WInds/Minnewauken (2016)

Region 5- 1 total championship since 1980
Standing Rock (1998)

Region 6- 3 total championships since 1980
Newburg (1986)
Bishop Ryan (1994)
Rugby (2015)

Region 7- 4 total championships since 1980
Hettinger (1983)
Dickinson Trinity x2 (2004, 2006)
Beulah (2012)

Region 8- 4 total championships since 1980
New Town (1980)
Divide County (1982)
Watford City (1991)
Parshall (2007)

So in order it goes

Region 2- 13
Regions 3 and 4- 6 each
Regions 7 and 8- 4 each
Regions 1 and 6- 3 each
Region 5- 1

And obviously either region 1 or 3 will add 1 to their total tomorrow!

Region 4 had two more championships because Carrington was in Region 4 when winning their state titles. And I know there are other shifts of teams in regions and even whole regions since 1980.

Rather than go by regions that have fluctuated over the years, this is how I always explain to people where the power in Class B basketball lies:

Take Highway 3 from the Canadian border south to Hurdsfield, then take Highway 200 east to the Minnesota border at Halstad. North and east of the boundary I just described is where the best Class B basketball in the state has been played for 50 years. This year was only the third in the last 30 that at least one team in the state title game didn't come from this area of the state.
