Thompson Four Sport Success

Does anyone have any insight into how rare it is historically for one Class B school to have state tournament participants in volleyball, girls bball, boys bball, AND a football champion in the same year?

And if there are precedents for this, how did those teams do in the tournaments? This feels like a massive accomplishment and I haven't been able to find much reporting on this question.

Linton won State Football, 2nd in State Wrestling and Girls BB, and 3rd in State Boys BB in 2003-04.

Thompson is also a favorite for Baseball as well.

So I spent some time this afternoon doing the research.

Since the introduction of ND Class B volleyball in 1989, only two other Class B schools have made state tournament appearances in volleyball, girls basketball, and boys basketball, and appeared in a state championship football game in the same academic year:

1) Dickinson Trinity in 2005-06: They placed 5th in volleyball, 6th in girls basketball, 1st in boys basketball, and 1st in AA Division football.

2) Linton-HMB in 2011-12: They placed 4th in volleyball, 2nd in girls basketball, 7th in boys basketball, and runner-up in A Division football.

So Thompson could potentially exceed Trinity's feat by winning three titles in one year. And I think with less teams competing in now than in the 1990s or 2000s it seems reasonable to think this four-sport competitiveness could happen more into the future.

(Thank you to Run4Fun for his cataloging of state tournament appearances in the ND Preps boards that made this a heckuva lot easier. I'm going to keep going and see how many 3-out-of-4 instances there are for the fall & winter sports.)

Sports fan, I knew about Linton-HMB's State appearances in the four sports in 2011-12 but they didn't win at least one title so I didn't think it compared to the question. Had it added to my previous post but erased it.

Oh for sure. To be fair to you I changed the parameters of my question after I found that no school met the first standard I set, so I wanted to give Linton-HMB a shout out for coming close. I figured you knew that since you mention L-HMB before.

What’s even more incredible about it is the fact they can do while they lose so many athletes to Forks, as heimer said.

I have edited my previous post to include Dickinson Trinity, who I missed the first time I looked through my list.

I would think Minot Ryan with all past athletic successes would definitely have a year or two.

In 05-06, Dickinson Trinity boys won football, basketball and track. In 83-84, Velva won football, wrestling and baseball. I believe these are the only two Class B schools to win three.

In 1999-2000, Bishop Ryan boys won football, golf and finished second (to Oak Grove) in basketball. I'm sure there is a longer list of teams that have done two.

Makes sense. For the purposes of my 'research' I only wanted to focus on the fall & winter team sports, but it'd be interesting to look through all state champions in a given year. Maybe I'll try to look at that later.

So I finished looking through the fall & winter sports state tournament appearances and have found 13 occurrences of 3-out-of-4 "state" appearances for those sports by the same Class B school in one year. There were no occurrences in the first 12 years, all have been since 2000-01.

2000-01: Dickinson Trinity - 3rd (BBB), 5th (GBB), 1st (AA football)
2001-02: May-Port-CG - 1st (BBB), 4th (GBB, 1st (VB)
2002-03: Dickinson Trinity - 2nd (BBB), 7th (VB), 2nd (AA football)
2002-03: Linton - 5th (BBB), 4th (GBB), 1st (9-man football)
2003-04: Linton - 3rd (BBB), 2nd (GBB), 1st (9-man football)
2006-07: Dickinson Trinity - 2nd (BBB), 4th (VB), 2nd, (AA football)
2010-11: Linton-HMB - 7th (BBB), 3rd (GBB), 2nd (VB)
2011-12: Grafton - 5th (BBB), 1st (GBB), 1st (AA football)
2014-15: Shiloh Christian - 5th (BBB), 6th (GBB), 2nd (9-man football)
2015-16: Shiloh Christian - 4th (BBB), 1st (GBB), 7th (VB)
2017-18: Langdom/Edmore/Munich - 5th (GBB), 3rd (VB), 2nd (A football)
2017-18: Shiloh Christian - 6th (BBB), 8th (VB), 2nd (9-man football)
2018-19: Langdon/Edmore/Munich - 5th (GBB), 3rd (VB), 1st (A football)

Some other occurrences of same-year, same-school "state" appearances from pulling together this data:
27 occurrences of boys & girls basketball in 45 seasons
21 occurrences of girls bball & volleyball in 31 seasons
31 occurrences of boys bball & football in 44 seasons
