Best players to not make state

I was glad the whole state got to see Kyler McGillis play and a lot of people that I talked to were impressed. Third place was fun with McGillis getting 2,000 points and getting a cut above his eye from a knee and a I think not making state last year hurt him in the Mr. Basketball voting. Obviously I think he deserved the award. Also thought Dalton Prouty could’ve been on all tournement team but their must be a limit to 10 players? One for each team and 2 for the teams in the championship.

But it got me thinking, had SJ not made state a lot of people would not have got to see him play. So who were some of the best players to never make it to state. Melvin Langstaff from Warwick comes to my mind.

I'm pretty sure Spunky Langstaff (his father, I think) played on the 1989 Warwick team that made it with Keith Snortland as coach.

I don’t think Andy Leraas of Hillsboro, a Mr. Basketball Finalist in 2005, ever played at State. I believe he finished his career with something like 2,200 points and over a thousand rebounds (someone can surely correct me if this is not correct, but I remember those numbers for some reason).

Woodchuck, not every team at state is guaranteed a player on the all-tournament team. The team is voted on by the working media at the State tournament, which includes daily and weekly newspaper staff covering the tournament. I believe there are at least 10 players chosen, with no limitations on the number of players from each team. Goes strictly by total votes. Ties are not broken, so if three players tie for the 10th spot, 12 will be on the team. Last year, there were 13 players on the team. Hillsboro/CV and FW/Minnewauken each had 4, Ellendale had 2, and Oak Grove, Bishop Ryan and Stanley each had 1. Dickinson Trinity and TLMM did not have any.

I enjoyed finally getting to see McGillis play, he is the real deal and one of the best guards in the state from what I saw in the State Tournament. Prouty can play too. St. John's was fun to watch.

Jacob Hagler (2013)- Mr Basketball candidate. Should've won Mr.Basketball that year if you ask me.

Him and Daniel Grande were a dynamic duo through 5-6 years of High School Basketball.

Their Senior year in 2013 they lost to FW in the region championship game. I realize they were there. As they won the B the year before against Grafton.

if '13 was their senior year they didn't make it to state.

2013 was Milnor and FW in the championship game in Minot..... NS didnt make it.

Your right for some reason I was thinking that they were seniors when they lost in the state championship.

at that Juncture in R4 (2012-2013) they could only hold of FW's for so long.....they were coming on strong and we all know what happened in the years to follow....although NS did show back up in 2014....and had they not lost Weston the one year it may have been interesting also.....in other words the NS FW's battles will linger in memory for a while....especially for the R4 towns and fans...
