Mid season thoughts

Postby The Schwab » Wed Jan 17, 2018 10:56 am

To spark more conversation: I saw this on the girls side.

5 teams most likely to get to the state tournament?
5 teams with the best chance to win the state tournament?

Girls side was way easier to pick 5 teams that should make it to state, boys will be more interesting.

5 teams that should make it.

1. Carrington
2. Stanley
3. Bismarck
4. Minot
5. St. John

5 Teams with the best chance of winning

1. Stanley
2. Winner of Region 2
3. St. John
4. Minot
5. Fargo

From what I've seen, and I'm not as familiar with the eastern side of the state as I have been in the past.

Region 1- I give a slight nod to Fargo, but Maple Valley, Richland and WL could challenge
Region 2- 3 team race (Thompson, HCV, Grafton), no idea who will come out, I'd guess Thompson
Region 3- Carrington is the favorite, EKM is the only team I see challenging. District 6 is down
Region 4- St. John is the favorite, but I'll never count out FWM (they're playing good ball now)
Region 5- Bismarck is the favorite, but without Ogbu they are closer to the field, Solen will challenge
Region 6- A lot of parity here. Bottineau or Minot are the two I'll pick between. Minot
Region 7- Dickinson, Beulah and Hettinger Scranton will battle it out, don't sleep on Beach
Region 8- Stanley is the heavy favorite, New Town will challenge. I'll take Stanley

Confidence I have in picking the regions
1. Region 8- Stanley
2. Region 3- Carrington
3. Region 5- Bismarck
4. Region 1- Fargo
5. Region 4- St. John

Region I feel that a Region champ could come out of with the teams I think could compete for a title
1. Region 2- (Thompson, HCV, Grafton)
2. Region 4- (St. John, FWM)
3. Region 6- (Minot, Bottineau)
4. Region 8- (Stanley)
5. Region 1- (Fargo)

Which Minot team? The one with 30 graduating seniors or the one with 17?

My mistake, in my post I was talking about Minot Bishop Ryan, but Minot Our Redeemers also has a good squad.

Would love to see teams like Maple Valley, Thompson, and St. John get over the hump and get to state. I don't believe any of the teams have ever been there and they have had some pretty good teams in the past.

I don’t think Thompson or St. John have. Maple Valley (Tower City) made a couple Class C tournaments in the late 50s-early 60s

St. John in 1949 class C went to state. Took fourth. Just won our first class B district title last year. Fingers, toes, and anything else the Woodchuck faithful can are crossed for this team.

FWM will go from region 4. The young players need a tough schedule to get them ready for tourney time.

R1 - Tri-State
R2 - Park River-FL
R4 - Langdon/E/M
R6 - Velva
R7 - Bowman...I think R7 is wide open...lots of close games in past month

Ill give it a shot

Region 1 - Oak Grove
Region 2 - H-CV, Thompson, slight chance to Grafton
Region 3- Carrington
Region 4- St. John, Dunseith, wont count out 4 winds
Region 5- Shiloh
Region 6- Minot Ryan, ORCS, Bottineau, MLS, DLB. Hardest Region to call
Region 7- D-T, Beulah, H-S
Region 8- Stanley, NT, NS-P

Regions 1,3,4 & 5 would take huge upsets for anyone else to come out

Region 1- Oak Grove (don’t know who could give them a run for their money, maybe W-L)
Region 2- HCV (expect another close game against Thompson but HCV pulls it out)
Region 3- Carrington ( Carringtons region to lose)
Region 4- St John ( Dunseith a good team but St. John is just to strong this year)
Region 5- Shiloh (TLMM could pull it off in this region also but going to going with Shiloh)
Region 6- Minot Ryan ( ORCS another good team but Ryan gets it done)
Region 7- Bealuh ( Dont know a whole lot about out west but will go with Bealuh as they seem to be the most consistent team in the region)
Region 8- Stanley ( Potential to be great but have been sneaking by lately but I see them getting by NT in a tough game)

"Region 1- Richland (Toss up between them and Oak Grove, need to play Man to Man D)
Region 2- Thompson (I'd be very surprised if Thompson doesn't make it out of the region this year)
Region 3- Linton-HMB (Don't really know who would give them a challenge, possibly Carrington)
Region 4- St. John (I know Four Winds doesn't rebuild, they reload, but I think St. John has all the pieces)
Region 5- Shiloh (I don't think there will be much standing in their way this year)
Region 6- Bishop Ryan (Not from the area, but they competed pretty well at state without their best player)
Region 7- Beulah (Don't lose too much from last years team that almost got out of the region)
Region 8- Stanley (Should make it out of the region, but to really make a run at state they need to learn to run their offense from the inside out, from what I saw at state there were too many empty possessions because they would shoot the three out of rhythm without working it inside or drive and kick)"

This is what I had on a different thread before the from before the season started. The only teams that I would change now would be changing out Richland and Linton for Oak Grove and Carrington. Region 2 is a little tighter at the top than I thought it would be, but I will still take Thompson over HCV. Shiloh without Ogbu might be a little closer to TLMM than I originally thought, but I will still take them.

Would you still consider Park River/FL a contender? To me, it's tough to put them over any other seed 4-8 in Region 2.
