Went to the 2017 Grand Am over the weekend and witnessed some talented BBB teams in the HS Division.
In the end, the Mantador Mustangs defended their title from last year. This is a great accomplishment for a bunch of small-town class B kids to do this on a large stage against top level competition.

The team was composed of a group of class B Region 1 kids and a couple of kids from Breckenridge-Wahpeton.

Team members were:

Cody Mauch, Nick Mauch, Ryan Biewer (Hankinson)
Logan Nelson and Nick Nelson (Northern Cass)
Jake Hanson (Milnor-North Sargent)
Cooper Lingen (Richland)
Carson Yaggie and Steven Lipp (Breckenridge)
Charlie Wynn (Wahpeton)

The Mantador Mustangs were all Seniors. This group knows each other very well and they had many Region 1 games against each other. It was mostly the same group last year when they won it as Juniors.

They played WF Sheyenne in the championship. On the way they beat a Minnesota all-star team, a team from Minot which was mostly kids who won the State A championship, a Turtle Mountain area team, and a team from Bemidji.

How many schools from class b were represented this year in Grand Am. Its been a few years since I had any reason to follow the tournament. When I was there numbers for class b schools were not that many and most of the teams were from larger class b schools I knew of from the region. I was just wondering if numbers were holding or is it dropping because when I was there teams were coming from farther and farther distances.

I would say there are more local teams than there were in the past years not nessecarily Class b but a pile of fargo and west Fargo and Grand Forks so more Class A....Winnipeg always brings down many teams and the grade thing vs age thing can be interesting with the international teams because of when they start school etc etc
quite a few Minnisota teams also....

the grand am is like this I would say

some schools in class B send just players from their school exclusively ....
we've done this time in and time out but normally the team is comprised of a few towns or lets say friends from different towns/schools especially after the 8th grade

our 9th Grade team this year was a team that has played together since 6th grade in different tournament now and then throughout the past 4 years,....
3 from Cavalier
2 from Thopmson
2 from HCV
1 from North Border
1 from Dakota Prarie

so all Region 2 and then 1 from Region 4... :)
