It is very early, but for 2017-2018 the Region 1 favorites would have to be Oak Grove and Richland. After that, I would say Wyndmere-Lidgerwood, Maple Valley, & Tri-State will all have competitive teams. The remaining teams in Region 1 will be battling for 6-13.

OG will have their 2 starting guards back in Christianson and Anderson. Anderson doesn't score a ton, but as everyone will witness this coming weekend he's a ballhawk on defense. He causes fits for the opponent's PG and creates a lot of scoring opportunities for Christianson. Christianson will be the consensus R1 top player returning next year. Size could be an issue for them come playoffs.

Richland won't surprise anyone next year. They have a lot of pieces returning, but like OG they may lack in size a bit. Myers, Reiland, & Lentz are 3 very good pieces to build around so they should be tough for the next several seasons.

W/L will have Harles, Bohnenstingl, & Vasquez returning. 3 very good players & Harles will be a 3 year starter.

MV will return Punton, Killoran, & Hunter Smith in their starting lineup. Know the name Hunter Smith for next year, he'll be one of the top scorers in the entire state.

Tri-State returns Christensen and 6'7" Perry & 6'5" Abel. This team will push a lot of teams around next year with their size.

Overall, R1 will be down next year, and I expect it to be very top heavy. The level of talent this year made for a very competitive year and the top teams just beat up on each other. R1 had some extremely talented seniors that will be graduating, and they will be tough to replace.

1. Oak Grove-They are just too good all the time
2. Maple Valley- Hunter Smith is the best player in the region next year
3. Central Cass- They played better than their record showed this year and have a great program
4. W-L -Lost some of their guys but have some great players moving up next year
5. Tri-State- Retained their best players and have bigs to push people around
6. Lisbon-Played hard this year and gained some good experience for next year
7. Enderlin- There big guy was a 7th grader this year and will only get better
8. Northern Cass- Great basketball program. Lost a great player but have some moving up that could help balance the loss
9. Richland- Losing their best player and their 2 big guys will be too much next year. They have some good freshman so I'm assuming they will move up in 2 years
10. Hankinson-Lost their best players
11. Milnor- Same as Hankinson
12. Kindred- Lost their entire starting lineup
13. SC

vikes87 I know its your opinion, but you have know idea what is coming from Richland, they will be starting 4 sophomores n a junior and will beat 3-8 no problem next year, and Andrew Christianson will be senior player of the year next year, smith is great shooter but not on Christianson level.

I have to agree...I think Richland will be a factor. Impressive young group. Also agree that Christiansen has to be front runner from what I have seen.

There is no question that Richland will be good and returns a lot next year. But, I don't think people are giving enough credit to the seniors that they will be loosing. Two bigs, Roob and Evanston, and their best player, Lingen. Will they have any size other than Lentz next year? And he shoots more threes than inside. Size isn't everything but they will be a pretty short group. I'm more apt to put them around 4 in the region.

Central Cass is a bit too high...they lose 7 seniors; they do have a good program but I think they'll need next year to rebuild...8th & 9th grade teams are above average and have some height.

Maple Valley has a good coach and players work hard and play tough...could definitely see them near top of Region next year.

M-NS and Kindred both lose a lot but both had decent JVs so depending on the work done in the offseason...I could see them higher than vikes has them

I've heard Northern Cass will be down next year from good sources...however, as stated above, hard work in the offseason can fast-track teams to better places. Jaguars will be young and will probably need a year to rebuild. Crockett (8th grade) is going to be a good PG and their 8th grade team was REALLY good this year.

EDIT: Now that the 2016-17 season is over...I will post my 2017-18 early predictions, players returning/lost, etc. sometime soon.
