This all happened at the regional tournaments during one season on the 80's. Can you name the season and any of the specific events?

1. A lawsuit was filed over the controversial ending of a region semifinal game.

2. One player outscored the opponent- by himself- in a region championship game.

3. A team was shut out in the 4th quarter of a region championship game and went on to lose the game in overtime.

I have a question for anybody who can answer. What are the worst, record wise, teams to make state? Either by coming from an overall weak region or not winning during regular season but showing up during tournament time. Thanks for any answers.

Divide County had 9 or 10 losses when they made it to state in 2012, I believe.

This should be an inclusive list of teams that came into the state tournament with double digit losses going back to the 1957 season:

1957 Oak Grove (15-10)
1958 Minot Model (16-16)
1966 Linton (16-10)
1973 Edgeley (14-11)
1980 Belfield (17-10)
1989 Warwick (16-10)
2000 Minot Ryan (14-12)
2002 Berthold (14-12)
2004 Minot Ryan (15-11)
2005 Central Cass (13-13)
2007 Shiloh Christian (14-11)
2011 Standing Rock (12-13)

DC came into that state tournament with a 17-8 record.

I was not yet around but have talked to someone that played at that time. He told me that because of the blizzard the district tournaments were all backed up. His team ended up playing the final two rounds of the district and two regional games on four successive nights. There was at least one region final that wasn't played until the Monday before the state tournament began.

Fort Yates was in its first year of Class A play that year after moving up from B. Three Fort Yates coaches went to Mandan to scout the first round games of the SW Region tournament. They got caught in the blizzard on the way home about half way between Mandan and Fort Yates. To stay warm they ripped out the back seat of the car and created a fire pit to burn whatever they could find. A state snowplow rescued them in the middle of the night. A couple of nights later they had their team back in Mandan playing at the tournament.

It's been a week so here are the answers:

1. Fort Yates filed a lawsuit after losing after losing to Center 59-58 in 3OT. Fort Yates had scored to take a one point lead with 1 second remaining on the clock. Center threw a pass the length of the court where Roland Jacobs caught the pass, apparently took a dribble and then made the shot. With the noise in the gym the officials claimed they couldn't hear the buzzer, so the conferred with the scorekeeper who said the shot was before the buzzer. Fort Yates filed the lawsuit against the NDHSAA asking for the result of the game to be reversed. The lawsuit was dropped after meeting with the NDHSAA the following week.

2. Hillsboro's Kyle Meyer scored 25 points in a 54-24 win over Thompson in the Region 2 title game.

3. Wilton led Westhope 32-24 going into the 4th quarter of the Region 6 title game. However, Westhope outscored Wilton 8-0 in the final period to tie the game and went on to win 38-36 in OT.

Roland and Kyle were both '81 grads. So those games had to be '80 or '81. Guessing Jeff Cooper was Westhope's main man, also '81 grad. Going with 1981.

I have a good trivia question.

Mayville-Portland were the class B state Champions in 1987.

Who were the three teams they beat to become state champions?

Mayville-Portland beat Glen Ullin, Page and Linton in the state tournament. Glen Ullin and Page were unbeaten before playing Mayville-Portland.

In 1987, Mayville-Portland (Region 2) beat Glen Ullin (Region Eight), Page (Region 1) and Linton (Region 5) in the state tournament. Glen Ullin and Page were unbeaten before playing Mayville-Portland. Let’s see if I can remember the scores. Defeated Glen Ullin, 54-52, on Ben Jacobson’s last-second shot; beat Page, 77-73; and beat Linton, 72-61. Page had Brian Buhr (sp.) and I believe he scored 100 points in that State tournament. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but weren’t Mayville-Portland, Glen Ullin and Page ranked 1-2-3 coming in? Other teams in the tournament were Divide County (Region 7), Starkweather (Region 3), Dunseith (Region 6) and Leeds (Region 4).

I know Dunseith was undefeated that season so probably ranked high as well. Leeds upset them in the first round and then lost to Linton and Page.

Was this played in Fargo at NDSU Fieldhouse?

The most consecutive weeks at number one:

Linton - 19 weeks: 12-29-2008 through 2-15-2010
Four Winds-Minnewaukan - 18 weeks: 1-11-2016 through 2-20-2017
New Rockford-Sheyenne - 18 weeks: 12-15-2003 through 1-24-2005

Glen Ullin was ranked number one all year in 85-86 and 86-86 but than only included 14 weekly polls because the first poll wasn't released until January those year.

I though MPCG would have been up there in either 96 and 97 or the 02 and 03 seasons.

Brian was a very good player. Quick first step. Quick release. Good elevation on his jump shots. Good range. Good hops, for his size probably had as many dunks as anybody I can remember. Very "confident" player, floor leader. Had a great state tournament and believe he had a monster dunk in one of the games. Brother was very good as well.

Who was the last team to win a State Championship playing almost all zone defense? I know North Star has played some zone recently but do not remember how much they played when they won it.
