Wilbur wrote:The answer to all three of my questions is Linton High School.

1. What school has the most State Class B Tournament appearances, including whether or not they were part of a co-op?
Answer: Linton has been to the State Class B Tournament 20 times (17 as Linton from 1933-2010), and 3 times since co-op with Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock before the 2010-11 season.
Mayville is second with 18 appearances. Mayville went 6 times, Mayville-Portland went 3 times, and Mayville-Portland/Clifford Galesburg went 9 times.
Kenmare went 15 times, and Kenmore-Donnybrook once (1988) for a total of 16, and Hillsboro went 14 times, and Hillsboro/Central Valley went once for a total of 15.

2. Which school has the most State Class B Tournament appearances WITHOUT a co-op?
Answer: Linton High School, which went to the State Class B Tournament 17 times before a co-op with H-M-B. Linton’s final appearance before the co-op was in 2009, where it won the State title.
Kenmare has 15 (I think they were Kenmare-Donnybrook in 1988), and Hillsboro and Bishop Ryan/St. Leo’s each have 14 appearances. Beulah has 13 appearances, and Dickinson Trinity has 12 appearances since being moved to Class B in 1991. Minot Model, which closed in the 1960’s, I believe, also has 12 appearances, which stood as the record until Hillsboro broke it in 1999.
I will make a bold prediction that, unless things change in Class B, Dickinson Trinity or Shiloh Christian will be at the top of the list by 2030.

3. Which is the only school to qualify for the State Class B Tournament (with or without a co-op) at least once in each decade since the first State Class B Tournament in 1932-33?
Answer: Linton High School, which went to the State Class B Tournament in the 1930’s (1934 and 1935); 1940’s (1948), 1950’s (1950), 1960’s (1964, 1965 and 1966), 1970’s (1979), 1980’s (1980, 1984, 1985, 1987); 1990’s (1994), 2000’s (2003, 2004, 2005, 2009), and 2010’s (2011, 2012, 2014 as Linton-HMB). Linton has gone to state multiple times in 5 of the 9 decades, and at least three times in four of the decades.
Beulah was a good guess, because there are only two decades (1960’s and 2000’s) where the Miners were not in the State Class B Tournament.
Mayville was very close, too, and even if you cheat and add Portland’s two appearances in 1955 and 1961, no team in the current co-op made an appearance in the 1930’s. Hillsboro’s first appearance wasn’t until 1962.
Kenmare has 16 appearances in the State Class B Tournament, but 14 of them came between 1940-68, including six straight (1963-68) and seven times overall (1961; 1963-68) in the 1960’s. It took Kenmare 20 years to get back to state in 1988, and another 28 years before the Honkers made another appearance in 2016.

Note: Hillsboro is credited with 14 State Class B appearances in PAST State Class B Tournament programs, but they are only listed as going 13 times (1962, 1968, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1999). I don’t know if a year was missed by someone, or if they were overcounted, so I will give the Burros credit for 14 appearances from 1962-2016, until someone can tell me definitively otherwise.

Missed 1992 for Hillsboro.

Linton has had the benefit of playing in the weakest region in the state, which has heavily inflated the number of state appearances. Since going to the two class system in 1964, Edgeley in 1990 is the only other team that advanced from the region Linton was in to even play in the state championship game! The region is a little stronger now with Carrington and Oakes being shifted in a couple of years ago, but still not near as difficult as most other regions around the state.

This one is interesting to me. Would love to know the answer.

Was the team that entered districts with only one loss two years in a row Hillsboro? I know they were one of the top teams in 98 and they didn't make regions.

Hillsboro was 17-1 in both '82 and '83 and lost in the semifinals of the district tournament both years. Hillsboro was also 19-0 in '85 when they lost the district championship game to Mayville-Portland.

a true powerhouse that they (hills) were...always winning! must have been fun to beat them :)
after they beat Epping in 1977 everybody knew Hillsboro
Good stuff B historian!

in 83 Henninger won State

who beat hillsboro in the semis at districts? and what district and Region was it then?

District 5 and Region 2 for Hillsboro at that time. They lost 33-31 to Mayville-Portland in '82 and 37-36 to Hope in '83.

I think many people remember think very highly of that '83 Hettinger team, mainly because they had two all-state players in Bill Butterfield and Ted Uecker. But they had some very tight games on the way to the state title. They beat Center 47-44 in OT in the R8 semis and then had one point wins over Surrey and Munich in the first two rounds at state.

B Historian, thank you for jarring my memory about Hillsboro in 1992. I believe they lost to eventual State Champion Munich in the semi-finals, and beat Napoleon for third place that year.

I am not going to defend Linton or Region 3. That was not my intent. In fact, the answer to both of my first two questions will change, probably within the next decade. However, the answer to number three will stand until at least 2029, but possibly beyond if Linton-HMB should go to State in the 2020’s.

Looking at the facts you stated, I would have to agree that Region 3 would not be in the top four toughest regions, but it would not be in the bottom two either. I would like to point out that Region 3 teams have won their first game at the State Tournament in four of the past five seasons. LaMoure/L-M beat Dickinson Trinity (one of the favorites) in the 2013 quarterfinals, Linton-HMB beat 3rd-seeded Cavalier in 2014, LaMoure/L-M beat 4th-seeded New England in 2015, and Ellendale beat 2nd-seeded Dickinson Trinity this year. Strasburg-Zeeland took third-seeded Our Redeemer’s to the wire before losing, 61-58, in the 2016 quarterfinals. That may not mean anything, but you could use that for an argument that either Region 3 is not as weak as people think or that the seeding at the State Tournament leaves something to be desired.

As far as Carrington and Oakes making a weak region stronger, it has yet to be proven. Both came into Region 3 from Region 4 in 2014-15, and although Carrington has reached the Region 3 Tournament all three seasons, this year was the first time the Cardinals won a game at the tournament. Oakes reached the region championship game in 2015, but has had a losing record and not made it to regionals since. In other sports, Carrington has reached the region title game in girls basketball the past three years, and won the championship in 2016. The Lady Cardinals did not reach the volleyball region championship game until this year, where they lost to two-time defending State Champion LaMoure/L-M.

Region 3 used to be made up teams in far NE North Dakota but I don't remember how long this area was region 3 but I do know it started in 1960's and went into the 80's. During that time it included area from Minto to Pembina going from there over to Rolla down to Cando. It was made up districts 9, 10, 11, and 12. I would guess that Linton has been moved around some in different regions over years because of their location. Also where Linton region has been is one hot beds of high school wrestling in the state of North Dakota. I can remember so many of neighboring town of Linton being highly regarded in wrestling over the years and Linton was known for basketball.

RunforFun2009, I knew that, but got caught up in Carrington and the year they came into Region 3. Carrington and Midkota came into Region 3 from Region 4, and Oakes came into Region 3 from Region 1, all in 2014-15. Sorry about that.

B-oldtimer,
Region 5’s area changed to Region 3 before the 1999-2000 season, when the regions were changed to their current locations. Before that it was Region 1 (far southeast), Region 2 (far east central), Region 3 (northeast), Region 4 (north central to the east), Region 5 (south central from Missouri River east), Region 6 (north central to the west), Region 7 (northwest and west central) and Region 8 (southwest).

Region 5 had four districts (17-20) from 1975-1989 and three districts (13-15) from 1990-92. In 1992-93, each region was reduced to two districts, and Region 5 became Region 3 (Districts 5 & 6) before the 1999-2000 season, where it still is today. The teams in the old Region 3 (1975-99) to which you refer are now a part of either Region 2 or Region 4 (possibly even Region 6 in the far west of the region).

Good stuff once again....you and Wilbur bring back some great memories for members here on ndpreps and I and I'm sure they all appreciate it :)

I had forgot about that Hope game but it came back to me after reading it....friends and players from my school ventured down to Fargo my Jr. year, the State tourn was very seldom there but for some reason was there that year of 82' we were sorta following Edmore with Vigor and Peska and Fridje hoping they would win from our area but they ran into Crosby Divide co. and lost a close one....I'm wondering had everybody taken the stall approach (eddie beyer) in that time frame in a sense because I remember that Edmore game being in the 30's also....no three pointer and no shot clock and a lot of zone D also, I suppose this all contributed too but there were sure some low scoring games considering the size and ability of the athletes....

Butterfield and Uecker were very good players ....that tournament was very hard for me to watch coming off my senior season, everything was bitter/sweet when it came to Basketball for a while for me in 83' and beyond ....but that was a very unpredictable year and our coach had pointed that out all season ....some very good balance in all regions across the state....

I wonder if Butterfield and Uecker played some college ball?

Winner-within,
I don’t know if Bill Butterfield played college ball anywhere, but Ted Uecker played at Minot State when I was there in 1985-86. dude Limke was the Coach that year, and all of the players on the roster were from North Dakota. the roster also included Rick Hedberg (Parshall), John Schaeffer and Randy Palmer of Bismarck Century, and Mike Mann of Bismarck High. Some of the freshmen players that year were Chris Lamoureux (Co-Mr. Basketball 1985) of Newburg, Kevin Bohl of Towner, Terry Keller and Darren Leier of Karlsruhe, Tom Rothmann of Washburn, and Jeff Hitland of Alexander.

Richard Limke did a great job of recruiting ND talent and his teams were always competitive at the NAIA level. I enjoyed going to the games when I attended Minot State because of all the local talent. (used Richard instead of the nickname so it wouldn't get changed to dude!)

I don”t know how we judge which region is the strongest or weakest, but the consensus seems to be the number of appearances in State title games and actual state titles. I think this will be fun for everyone to judge for themselves. The Class B Regions switched to their current locations in the 1999-2000 season, and here is how each region stacks up in the past 18 seasons. (2000-17)

Region 1: 4 State Finalists, 3 State Champions (Fargo Oak Grove 2000, Milnor 2013, Oak Grove 2014)

Region 2: 8 State Finalists, 5 State Champions (North Border 2001, Mayville-Portland/C-G 2002 and 2003, Grafton 2008, and Hillsboro/Central Valley 2017)

Region 3: 1 State Finalist, 1 State Champion (Linton 2009)

Region 4: 9 State Finalists, 4 State Champions (New Rockford-Sheyenne 2005, Carrington 2010, North Star 2011, Four Winds/Minnewauken 2016)

Region 5: 1 State Finalist, 0 State Champions.

Region 6: 7 State Finalists, 1 State Champion (Rugby 2015)

Region 7: 5 State Finalists, 3 State Champions (Dickinson Trinity 2004 and 2006; Beulah 2012)

Region 8: 1 State Finalist, 1 State Champion (Parshall 2007)

I would also like to do the same with the last 20 seasons (1980-99) of the old region alignments. Keep in mind that the areas of the regions have changed dramatically, especially in Regions 3, 5, 7 and 8. (I’m going to use the roman numerals like the olden days).

Region I: 0 State Finalists, 0 State Champions (Sargent Central won it 1979).

Region II: 7 State Finalists, 5 State Champions (Hillsboro 1981, Mayville-Portland 1987, Central Valley 1993, Mayville-Portland/C-G 1996 and 1997)

Region III: 6 State Finalists, 3 State Champions (Edinburg 1988, Bisbee-Egeland 1989, Munich 1992)

Region IV: 4 State Finalists, 2 State Champions (Carrington 1995, Leeds 1999)

Region V: 4 State Finalists, 3 State Champions (Linton 1984 and 1985, Edgeley 1990)

Region VI: 9 State Finalists, 2 State Champions (Newburg 1986, Minot Bishop Ryan 1994)

Region VII: 6 State Finalists, 3 State Champions (New Town 1980, Divide County 1982, Watford City 1991)

Region VIII: 4 State Finalists, 2 State Champions (Hettinger 1983, Standing Rock 1998).

Wilbur I have to correct you on your region alignments prior to 2000. Region 6 consisted of teams in southwest( south of I94), Region 7 teams in west central(north of I94 and west of US83), and region 8 was the area around Minot and to the west and northwest.

Minot used to hold two region tournaments. Region 6 and Region 7. When I was at Minot State in 1985-86, the Region 7 Tournament was at the dome and the Region 6 Tournament was at the Auditorium.

Yellowjacket, I stand corrected. I know Region 5 became Region 3 in 2000. I wasn’t aware that any of the other regions changed before that. They may have changed 1993-94, for other regions besides that. If someone can tell me what the regions were for the state finalists from 1994-99, I can correct that data on my post. Sorry about that. The 2000-17 figures should be accurate, though.

Minot would be correct. The regions that played their over the years have probably changed. I remember region 7 being at the auditorium and region 8 at the dome.

State tournament success is a poor way to judge region strength. By that logic region 3 was better than region 1 this year or the eastern conference was better than the western conference last season because the cavs beat the warriors.

I do agree region 3 is a weaker region. They don't have any big or private schools.

Ok, I think I finally got my crap together on this region alignment thing. I started following Class B Basketball in 1978-79, even though I remember watching the 1977 and 1978 State title games. At that time, there were 8 regions with 4 districts apiece. The regions were 1 (southeast), 2 (east central), 3 (northeast), 4 (north central to the east), 5 (south central from Missouri River east), 6 (north central to the west), 7 (northwest corner, west central) and 8 (southwest). This alignment continued through the 1989-90 season, when the districts in each region were reduced to 3 for the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons.
The districts in each region were reduced to 2 starting in 1992-93, and some of the region alignments changed, most notably, Region 8 became Region 6, and Region 6 became Region 8, and added some of the area from the northern part of Region 7. This continued through the 1997-98 season, and beginning in 1998-99, the regions were aligned to what they are today.
1993-98 is still kind of a gray area for me for some reason.
