My guess is Ben Jacobson (Mayville-Portland) in 1989 Region 2 Tournament 3rd place game.

This is correct! Mayville-Portland was the top-ranked team in the state but was upset by Northwood in the region semifinals with Jacobson having an off game. He came back to score 54 the following night in his last HS game.

New trivia:

1. What's the biggest regional championship game blowout in Class B history?

2. What's the biggest enrollment disparity between two teams in a Class B state tournament game?

3. One team beat another team two years in a row on a buzzer beater in the state tournament. Who are the teams?

1. 2013 Region 8 Championship: 52 points - Trenton DEF. Tioga 91-39 ??

Correct! Trenton won three regional tournament games by a combined 112 points that season.

My guess for number 2 has to be Hillsboro and Epping.

I thought that too but figured it wouldn't be THAT obvious of an answer.

If it wasn't Epping/Hillsboro, I'll throw out Grafton/TLMM. 247 - 52 (approximate on enrollment).

It was not Epping/Hillsboro (210 - 24) or Grafton/North Star. Happened in the 70's.

That is not correct. Think mid-70's.

Hillsboro & Minto...I honestly don't know enrollment sizes for that time period

It is not Minto- they had 102 students that year. Also, the question was state tournament game, not necessarily a championship game.

I'll say the game involved Zeeland or Fullerton in 74 or 75.

My guess is New Town vs Robinson in 76 or Larimore vs Fullerton in 75. Not sure if these teams played each other those years, just going by state entrants and looking at what may be the largest/smallest teams in the field those years.

Correct. Fullerton (enrollment 28) lost to Larimore (enrollment 290) 66-57 in the first round of the 1975 state tournament.

Larimore was in its second season back in Class B after spending 10 seasons as a Class A school. Larimore came into the state tournament that year with just a 20-7 record but played a brutal schedule in those days- the Polar Bears would play 4-5 Class A schools each year in addition to a Red River Valley Conference schedule that included May-Port, Hillsboro, etc. In fact, Finley and Hillsboro had both beaten Larimore twice that season. Larimore ended up reaching the championship game and lost to Parshall.

Fullerton had pulled off a huge upset in the Region One championship game, beating heaving favored LaMoure 43-34 after losing handily to the Loboes in the regular season and district championship. That same LaMoure team rolled through the 1976 state tournament.

Fullerton was a lot like the famous 1977 Epping team in that they were carried by two sets of brothers. The Blue Devils lost both games at state and finished 18-8. The school lasted just two more years, combining with Monango to form Dickey Central in the fall of 1977.

There are a few other interesting pieces of trivia that came from the 1975 tournament:

Fullerton had made the Class C state tournament in '58 and '61 so there had been some basketball success for such a small town. However, I believe Fullerton is the only school to have played in the State B without ever winning a Class B district tournament.

Larimore coach Bill Fruhwirth had coached Parshall to the 1971 state tournament before leaving for Larimore. I believe this the only time in State B history where a coach lost to his former school in the state title game. Del Kessler (Mayville-Portland) beat his former school (Linton) in the 1987 state championship game.

The 1975 state championship game was also one of the few at the Bismarck Civic Center not to be played before a capacity crowd because a blizzard hit Bismarck that afternoon and lasted into Monday morning. Several of the teams were stuck in Bismarck until around noon on Monday. The blizzard created a bit of a crisis since travelers forced off I-94 were unable to find a place to stay with all of the hotel rooms taken. Many local Bismarck residents opened up their homes to stranded fans.

New Town had an enrollment of 236 and Robinson 45 when they played in 1976.

Still looking for an answer to this question. As a hint, it happened in the 80's:

One team beat another team two years in a row on a buzzer beater in the state tournament. Who are the teams?

I'll take a guess. Edmore beat Glenfield Sutton and GSM back to back years on a buzzer beater

Correct! Edmore won 53-52 on a controversial last second shot in the 1980 consolation round and then won 55-53 in overtime on a last second shot in the 1981 semifinals.

Another interesting piece of trivia from those two tournaments: Hillsboro and New Town played overtime games both years with New Town winning 46-44 in 2OT in the 1980 semifinals and Hillsboro winning 45-44 in OT in the 1981 first round. Both of those games were tied at 40 at the end of regulation and each of the winners went on to take the state title.

The first AP Class B All-State team was in 1977. Since then seven teams have won a state title without having a single player named first or second team all-state. How many of those teams can you name?

Nice work! I didn't think anyone would come up with the answer so fast.

Next question: There have been six occasions in Class B history where the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the state faced off in the regional tournament. Who can name the six games?

Yes, you pointed out the two most recent occasions.

Of the other four, one was in the 2000's and two in the 70's in the same region in back to back years. The other time was in the late 60's.

The other ones are before my time but my curiosity wonders if Larimore/Hatton in the 70s? (shot in the dark)
