Who chooses the #1-#4 seeds? Is it the same group who does the polls during the season?

My thoughts on the seeding:

FW/M is the clear choice for #1 seed.

Both Shiloh and ORCS can make good cases for the #2 seed. I was surprised when Shiloh was bumped out of the #2 ranking late in the regular season just for losing a close game to FW/M, especially since they had a head-to-head win over ORCS. But ORCS has perhaps played better tournament competition recently (namely, Bishop Ryan twice) than Shiloh has. The #2/#3 is a real toss-up between these two, and I don't know who chooses or how they choose.

For the #4 seed, again, both Dickinson Trinity and Strasburg-Zeeland can make a good case for this. No idea how this one will shake out.

I think there are at least five (if not more) high-quality teams that have a legitimate shot at winning it all this year. And I only say at least five because I really don't know anything about some of the teams. Should be an awesome tournament.

I would have to agree. Having seen Kenmare this year, I would have to think having them beat Shiloh and ORCS just to get to the Championship would be one of the most unlikely set of upsets ever.

Don't get me wrong, Kenmare is fun to watch, but they like to get up and down the court, but if they tried against Four Winds they be playing right into Four Winds hands IMO.

Thanks for the info. That does seem to be a bit of an odd system to have the participating coaches vote, since how they vote influences who they will play.

It doesn't quite work that way. The FW/M coach can't say, "Oh, I'll vote for Kenmare as the last seed so I can play them first." The bottom 4 vote getters are put into a draw. That's how North Star ended up playing FCT in the first round of the girl's tournament. It's not a perfect system, but I think it's better than sportswriters or some other group being involved.

Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians
2016 State B Champions

I'm a fan of Region 5 and District 10 I would pick the team that represents us put since the Shiloh girls won the title. I don't want to see their boys do it. I know they have a good ball club. But that would be a catastrophe seeing Shiloh girls & boys with the state title in the same sport in the same year. I think Four Winds wins it all they've been close a couple of times. I think they'll get it done. I know that their isn't really that dominant team this year. Should be a great tournament but theirs no better place to have it a state b tournament then the Minot State Dome.

Could Grafton be a sleeper here?
They beaten 21-3 H/CV
18-6 Thompson
20-4 Larimore
I'm out out on a limb and its pretty shaky but if the wind doesn't blow to hard they will make it.

Re: 2015-16 State Tournament

Postby B-oldtimer » Sun Mar 13, 2016 11:30 pm

State tournament this year I have less interest in past years and I think I am loosing more interest each year. I look at this years tournament I see three Parochial schools in state tournament and think there are only about half dozen parochial schools and half of them made it and pair played each other to get to the state tournament and one other lost out in championship this must tell somebody something. Next we have Grafton one of the largest class b schools in the state and it played Hillsboro/centeral Valley the next largest school in that region what does that tell you. Northern Cass one of three schools surrounding Fargo it did have to beat Oak Grove but that region for most part has been dominated by this group of four for the most part. Then we get to region 3 one of true balanced regions in class b even though they did get Carrington thrown into the mix last year. Region 4 is made up Fourwinds a powerhouse and now Dunseith that looks to contend with Fourwinds in the future and Northstar looks to have at least one year left of this fominal run of good athletes for smaller school. Region 8 is unpredictable and always sends different candidate each year class b tradition. I then look at class b and I see for the most part see regions that are being dominated by three or four teams over last few years and if anything strongest teams are getting better and poorer teams are getting weaker. I look at region 4 which I am familiar with I see no change coming in near future in balance of power. District 7 Fourwinds will be favorite next year followed by New Rockford, Harvey/Wells county, and fight for fourth between Dakota Prairie and Benson county. In District 8 Northstar will be favorite followed closely by Dunseith and then will proably St. John and Rolla again next year. I guess for me i sure liked it when teams were more balance and you didn't know who might come for the following year but in class b this has not been case for some time start looking at some of the schools how long it has been since they made regional appearance let alone get into final two nights. I am betting there are number of schools its 10 years or soon approaching 10 years and even longer since they made second night of the region tournament. The one thing I can say though is Region tournament was never better attended this year in Devils Lake but both Fourwinds and Dunseith brought huge crowds so things seem to be going well. I just see another round of Coops coming and even less participation than we have now because of this terrible inbalance we have in class b they did do something about it in football but haven't come to realization that something has to be done in basketball.

Couple thoughts...
Northern Cass will not get blown out by Four Winds as many of you have predicted. They can handle a press and they have great guard play. IMO this could be Four Winds' toughest game of the tournament but we shall see.
Rooting for the small schools this year -- Go Kenmare, Strasburg/Zeeland, & Northern Cass!

Some generic observations and predictions:

- I think there is a clear tier 1 and tier 2 this year. The #1-4 seeds are there for a reason. Therefore, I don't think there will be any upsets on the first day this year.

- I think if FW/M has shown any vulnerability, it has been to teams that have size and are willing and able to play defense. The #2-#4 seeds all have size and play tough defense (Shiloh, ORCS, and DT are actually all pretty similar teams). Therefore, I think any of the top 4 seeds has a strong chance of winning it all this year.
