Top 3 Attributes of a Good Coach:

1. Puts personal growth ahead of winning - A good coach would rather win off the field/court than on it. They realize they play a huge role in developing good people and want to make sure that members of their program come out the other side better than when they entered. They teach life lessons, hold people accountable, and demand excellence in all aspects of life. They make the program part of the community and do all of those things that aren't part of the games but help their players grow and involve others in what they are doing. Examples would be elementary/individual skill camps, community fundraisers, cancer awareness or other cause nights, having their team give back to the community through service, etc.

2. Leadership - A good coach is a leader for the people in their program. They lead on the court/field, in the school, at their job, and in the community. They understand the magnitude of the platform they are given for those young people they work with and try to treat that with respect. They lead by example and are a positive role model for those around them.

3. Help team/program to meet their potential - The greatest coaching performances are those where teams out play expectations. They are when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. They are when a team should win 2 games but finds a way to win 6. They are when a team out works their talent and achieves above what should be possible. Some of the most talented teams never reach their fullest potential but win a lot of games. The "good" coach gets every last drop out of their athletes. I hate that we seem to constantly shower praise/accolades/etc on those coaches that walk into the season with the most talent and overlook the coaches that are getting the most out of the group of kids they have regardless of talent. It isn't like a coach suddenly becomes worse because the kids in their program weren't as talented as the year they won state (this is especially prevalent in Class B schools). You don't need to win the region to be a good coach, you need to do the most you can with what you have.

Being a good coach, I think is like being a good parent. Fire them up to work harder, make them accountable for their designs, and if they have to sit on the bench so be it. A good parent will know why you did that and know that it is best for the child. But treat all the kids fairly, don't treat your buddies kid any different than anyone else, or don't treat the one who's parent is always nagging at you different, the kid didn't do it, the parent did make them accountable from day one. Tell them who is the coach and if the kids listen to the parent during the game and not the coach, the pine bench will get company until the kid and parents listen. Be fair, they are kids, and don't scream at them on the floor if you didn't teach them in practice don't embrass them by screaming at them on the court.
