No... They are ranked no higher than tied for 11th and no lower than tied for 12th. And some of my teams are rated (via media vote) in the top 10.

I don't see Northern Cass in their top 10. At least the media poll has them ranked.

I agree 100% it is a large mistake to not have NC ranked. But, I can see mistakenly overlooking someone more than I can voting for someone who at best is around the 70th best team in the class.

Do you want to know why Central Cass has received votes? Because the play REAL competition. Are they are a top 10 team right now? Nope. That's why they aren't getting votes. But a win over Ellendale is very big and enough to get top 10 consideration. Who from Region 1 should be receiving love in their place?

What about Milnor-North Sargent? They beat Edgeley-Kulm and LaMoure-litchville-Marion who are two of the best teams in the south. Then they killed Maple Valley by 12.

Nobody, yet, but if you have to pick one...Hankinson.

I think there close game against May-Port CG today shows that Hankinson does not look to be a top team either. I hear and see a lot of people talking up Region I. I will say there are a lot of above average/pretty good teams in Region I. But that doesn't make for the best in the state. It makes for a region with a lot of even teams, but a region that will get crushed at state once again. A competitive yet, weak region.

Northern Cass was without one of their studs and another kid who will be back in February when they played Hankinson.

Just to let you know how good region 1 is this year is as Juniors made up of five won Grand Am last year against the all star team of Moody and more, they were also juniors.

1.cody mauch
2.nick mauch--2nd best point guard in region one behind logan nelson
3.ethan lingen
4.nic nelson and yes not logan
5.cooper lingen

Good to know. So if the state tournament featured each region's all-star team, we know that Region 1 would do well. In its current format, Region 1 has struggled badly at state tournaments. I don't see that changing this year.

You are correct. Recent history has not been kind to Region 1 at state. With Milnor winning state followed by OG taking 1st, then second, followed by NC last year going 2-1. NC's loss last year was to the champions and was the only game that Four Winds played that was not over well before games end.

I get that you are sick of Region one talk and are just trying to instigate, and that is cool. Hope it works.

Oak Grove took third in 2015. Northern Cass took fifth last year. To me, three or four years isn't history. Look at the last 15 years and then let's talk.

Hard for me to argue not having seen Mauch play but he has to be extraordinarily good to be better than Hanson. I have received feedback from Region 1 guys whom opinions I value that Nick Mauch is not at Hanson's level. Also, I don't think Nelson - Hanson is an apples to apples comparison, as I don't consider Nelson a true PG, he is definitely an amazing shooter/scorer but I don't see him as the floor general that Hanson is. This is not a slight in the least.

Apologies to the moderators, will continue this in the Region 1 thread. This doesn't belong in the polls thread.

Big Blue you stated...

" In its current format, Region 1 has struggled badly at state tournaments. I don't see that changing this year"

What did you mean by current format? I may be mistaken, but when you said current my mind went to recent years. In the last 4 state tournaments Region 1 is 10-2. The worst finish by the region was NC's 5th place finish. I thought they were the second best team in the field.

Region 2 which had a nice stretch as what I would consider the best region in the state has been not just down but pretty bad, especially lately. Over the last 4 years they have a record of 4-8 at state.

I was referring to hoophoophoop's comment about regarding Region 1 being strong because some of their good beat moody's team at some out-of-season tournament as far as the current format. I will post more about this topic on Region 1 thread.

Just to make a quick note on some games from this week. Northern Cass got their weaknesses exposed and showed that Logan Nelson cannot do everything by himself, he needs help. Nothing against him, he had a great game but needs some help if they wanna win region 1 again. Now to talk about a tournament that I got a chance to watch most of which was the Mandan holiday tournament. New Salem and Wilton both aren't great teams that placed eighth and seventh. Flasher and Grant County are below average teams as well who placed fifth and sixth. Bottinea is a team full of shooters who run a tough zone defense. From watching them throughout the tournament they're zone defense is inconsistent but offense is very good and full of shooters. Hettinger Scranton is basically a one man show. Kludt has the ability to fill stat sheets and has a high ceiling for improvement into his senior campaign for next year. The kid is very impressive he averaged 9 rebounds throughout the tournament and is only 5'6. Turtle lake is a very respectable team. They improved the most out of any team I have watched so far this year and are for sure the third best team in region 5 (behind Shiloh and Solen). They resemble bottinea quite a bit but have a tougher zone defense and more shot creators. Shiloh is good. They improved from there terrible first game against trinity and look ready to take on ALMOST any team in the state with a quality defense and a constantly improving offense.

ClassB123, thank you for your thoughts on the Mandan tournament, they are appreciated. I do have a question on your comments on Northern Cass. What are their weaknesses that you are talking about? I'm not saying that they don't have some, but what do you think they are?

To d_fense: Nelson is very nice player. The kid can score inside and out and defend anyone in class b. Northern Cas lacks scoring from some starters and the ones that can add alongside Nelson are very inconsistent. Just from watching I think their defense is tournament quality and being from a tough region 1 that needs to be there. Northern Cass in my book is still the favorite for region 1 but needs to make improvements on the offensive end.

So based off of the polls, the state tournament looks to be shaping up to look like this(seed in parenthesis):
Region 1: Northern Cass (5), Could be Milnor-North Sargent, maybe Kindred, Sleeper Hankinson

Region 3: Linton (6), Could be Carrington, maybe Kidder Co., Sleeper Ellendale
Region 4: Four Winds (1), Could be North Star, maybe St. John, Sleeper New Rockford
Region 5: Shiloh Christian (3), Could be Garrison, maybe Flasher, Sleeper Turtle Lake
Region 6: Bishop Ryan (7), Could be Our Redeemer's, maybe Des Lacs-Burlington, Sleeper Rugby

ClassB123, I'm thinkin just the opposite of what you said. Northern Cass is going to score points, its a matter if they can play defense. Logan Nelson is great offensively. I question you saying he's one of the best defenders in the state.

I agree. He's great offensive player, but I've yet to see it on defensive end. I've seen him play a few times, can get the shot off anytime, but haven't seen him guard another elite. When they played Hankinson earlier he didn't guard either Mauch & Nick went off for 35. Don't get me wrong great player, just haven't seen the shut-down defense.

Not going to be many that can compete with FWM this year. They are so deep with little drop off in their top ten. A team with great guards and a good inside game can beat them if they turn it in to a half court game. What teams out there fit that bill this season?
