Region 1 - Kindred
Region 5 - Shiloh Christian
Region 6 - Bishop Ryan or Rugby
Region 7 - Dickinson Trinity

The only region I really know is region 5.

If you are under 150 in your high school you play class B unless your city has a taxable valuation of over 4 million.

If you are between 150 and 400 in your high school you play class A

If you are over 400 in your high school you play class AA

I like this. Maybe a small tweak:

75 - 149 you play class B unless your city has a taxable valuation of over 4m.
<75 you play class B.

This would solve some problems being discussed. 2 cents.

So, saying <75 would play class b essentially goes with a x2 multiplier for a private school (74 x 2 < 150 or B cutoff). Believe any school that small, no matter where they are located, should be in lowest class. It is highly likely they will be a very strong team in that division, but would be a reasonable compromise IMO.

I don't know what the exact enrollments of private schools are, I can't find them. I will try to use the football plan guidelines and multiply that number by two. I will only use the schools that are currently in Class B:

Fargo Oak Grove- 178
Bismarck Shiloh Christian- 134
Dickinson Trinity- 124
Minot Bishop Ryan- 112
Williston Trinity Christian- 46
Minot Our Reedemers- 44

With the under 50 enrollment number both of those private schools in question would be in the small class. So I would say that would be a good compromise. I would stick to my plan. If your school is under 50 you're in the small class.

Trinity Christian definitely belongs in the smallest class. Our Redeemer's had a nice run for a couple of years but they seem to have come back to the pack now. I think 75 would be a better cutoff number than 50.

Using tax numbers for classifying high school sports programs is an intriguing idea. Has any other state done anything similarly or would this plan be the first of its kind nationwide?

I think the only plan that ever gets passed will be based off enrollment. Maybe they add a free and reduced meals calculation to it.

Brought this back from a while back. Just for discussion purposes since traffic is so slow.

After reading a number of posts in various threads, it seems that district tournaments are quite popular. The setup discussed in the above thread, 3 class (AA, A & B) would certainly generate a good district tournament atmosphere on the B side. If money is a reason to keep them, think about having 9-10 teams back in these district tourneys. Also, look at the A region tourneys and the type of hype (money) they would generate. Would assume those regionals would be double elim. Not so sure there wouldn't be some tv deals for those A region tourneys. As for the combined A & B state tourney, have to believe it would be a big hit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the NDHSAA will never go for a 3 Class system for basketball and volleyball unless we have a major, major changing of the guard at the NDHSAA. I'm not talking about Board members, I'm talking about the management.

No, I believe the closest vote ever was in 1990, when the proposal lost by around 5 votes. When that vote failed, Trinity and the old North Star conference teams started moving down to class B.

Devils advocate question here; wouldn't a secondary goal of this be-to break up the co ops that were created to compete with the metro & big B's? There seem to be a few teams in middle class that could be broken up and go on their own as a B team if they didn't have to compete against any metro or big B's???

To me any multiple class system for BBall would have to be treated as football in the sense that it always being evaluated and changing. Not sure the answer would be in that...

I posted part of this in the region 2 thread, but North Border beat Grafton last night. When is the last time that has happened? Hatton-Northwood also beat Grafton, I know it's been a long time (if ever) since that's happened.

I've often wondered on the girls side when was the last time some of the smaller schools beat Grafton too.

The NDHSAA just came out with some pretty big changes for football classifications again. Is there any chance these changes spark some real change for adding a third class to basketball? It just baffles me how quickly and often change happens in football, but almost never in basketball.

A quick answer to your original question, No. It will take schools looking to branch out on their own and form a different association for activities to get a 3rd class for basketball.

Do you think if they go to a super region format; instead of a third class for basketball would it change any? You can't have this current format forever, as some of the smaller towns are having a tough time fieldly even a JV team something to change for the better.

I'm all for a super region format or a third class of basketball.
