They should probably limit this to a top 5 list....Having 10 teams ranked out of 24 total seems to be excessive

Schwab,

Thanks for your opinion. If media outlets want to post just the top 5, that's fine. If you want to only take credence in the top 5, that's fine too. Computer rankings, which several states utilize, will often rank all the teams for a given sport in a given class. No reason that softball can't do 10.

1st official poll ever for Softball in the State of ND...they went Top 10 this year...could easily make a switch for next year. However, no matter how many are voted or represented in the poll...a poll was long overdue. Now to get a VB and Baseball poll for next year...I've been trying to get a VB poll for past 3 seasons!

I don't think this poll means a lot. Wilton-Wing beat Watford City and lost to D-L-B by one in a close game yet W-W sits at #8 while Watford's at #5.

Honestly wouldn't care...with the websites like here and northdakota-scores.net there should be easy access to help in ranking for VB. I think a coaches poll would be better as coaches know who the top teams are...they see them at tournaments during the season. Media doesn't always see all top teams play (some do..most don't).

It's a coaches' poll for softball, so they are voting for the teams they feel are the best. Isolating and comparing results is for fans. Coaches see these teams and know more about these teams than the average fan. Again, you don't have to like the poll. In fact, media polls and computer polls often end up with situations exactly like you described. Their just polls. They don't determine anything.

I think it's great that they have a poll, coaches voting probably is more accurate then a media poll. I was just saying that I think it's a bit excessive to have 10 teams ranked when there are under 30 teams in the state.

I actually had never thought of that, but a VB coach (on average) will see a lot more the state compared to say a BB coach.

Schwab,

Understood. Whether there are 20-25 teams or 100, there is still a 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th best, no? I understand both ways, but just think we complain a lot in today's society. There is a softball poll. Lots of media outlets are publishing it. This is a good thing.

Again, I have ZERO problem with the posting of the poll. I simply stated that ranking 10 teams out of 24 waters it down and takes away from the poll in my opinion. Me stating my opinion doesn't mean "complaining in today's society". Not everybody should get a ribbon. Just for the record I have never been to a high school softball game, so this poll doesn't matter to me at all. I see quite a few scores in which one ranked team beat another ranked team by double digit runs, to me that says watered down.

have you ever complained about the hoopster top 40 list being watered down?

Nothing wrong with a top ten. It's probably pretty accurate because the coaches make the poll.
It's great to give 10 teams recognition, it's good for the sport.

Hoopster top 40 list is completely watered down, but that comes out once and it's a preseason ranking done by one guy who gets input, returning players and stats from all the teams in the state. Ranking 40 out of 107 class b basketball teams is 37.3% of the teams being ranked. Ranking 10 teams out of 24 is ranking 41.6% of the class b softball teams. In my opinion they could get rid of all high school polls and it wouldn't bother me one bit.

I guess I don't understand the issue. If the hoopster had a poll of all 107 teams no one would call the list "watered down." It is what is. The 40th ranked team is probably slightly above average.

You're right, it is what it is. My opinion is my opinion, if you don't like it, don't understand it or don't agree with it... I really don't care.

I don't get why people are getting agitated over this. This is their inaugural poll...nothing says this is how they will continue to do it...maybe next year it will be less teams covered?! The key (IMO) is that with this poll it gives the sport and the teams a feeling like some cares in this state.

Would I have done smaller numbers if I was running the poll...yes; am I running the poll...no!

Everyone is entitled to an opinion...but don't become agitated when someone doesn't like the opinion. Happens all the time. This site is to blog, debate, post, discuss, etc; let's use it as that without as much emotion when there are differences.

At least they got rid of others receiving votes. That was a bad look.

When you look at the mission of the ND Softball All Stars, who spearheaded the creation of the coaches polls, the number makes more sense.

Their mission is to help the game of softball grow in North Dakota through education, opportunity and showcase. Putting out 10 teams for Class A & Class B hits on the education and showcase side at least.

The wonderful thing about polls is that they can be debated and can help create story lines, etc. Even more wonderful, they don't decide anything on the field :)

Plenty of discussion in this thread, so at least people are seeing them.
