I have some disagreements also...my main one is that Fargo North's boys are not as strong as they look on paper at the moment...I heard that their #2 runner broke a bone in his leg this summer and another Top 5 runner may play soccer instead of running...now that doesn't stop him from running in some meets (like EDC & State).

Shanley-Oak Grove and GF Red River will be sleepers in the weak EDC this year...my prediction in the EDC is:
1. WF (lost Stadum; but ALOT of GREAT runners coming back including Gehrig & Uetz)
2. Shanley-OG (good young runners...only lost one runner from last year; run as a pack #1-#7 runners)
3. North (could be #2 if the soccer player runs)
4. GFRR (they run as a tight pack)
5t. South (If Ihry runs they could contend for the EDC title; but if not they are #4 or #5)
5t. GF Central (Harlow and M. Torrey will carry the team; good young runners)

In the WDA it looks like:
1. Bismarck (Great runners...led by Osoro and Huizenga)
2. Jamestown (Slusser brothers and Hillius will lead the charge; very close battle)
3. Dickinson (Braunberger will lead a team that did not lose many runners from last season)
4. Century (Good young pack-running team; Kelly, Sather and Bray will be in the top 20 at the WDA)
5. Williston (led by Thompson and Anderson; need to find consistency with the #4 and #5 runners to contend)

4. Dickinson

5t. Williston

Other contenders for Top 5: Minot, North and Shanley-OG

Williston may be a stretch for fifth. Anderson and Thompson are both definatlely top ten caliber runners, but they need to find some runners who can fill the 4 and 5 spots. Stoaxc2004 hit that right on

Here are the Fargo Metro capsules from the Fargo Forum:

Fargo North

Coaches: Gary Mailloux (boys, 35th year); Aaron Walker (girls, fourth year)

- Boys to watch: Mach Akon, Sr.; Waha Sem, 8th grade; Jean Olivier, Sr.; Emmanuel Salah, Jr.; Francis Landman, So.

- Girls to watch: Abby Roche, So.; Emily Plecity, 9th; Anne Mayer, So.; Molly Gunkelman, Jr.

- Fast facts: Akon and Landman have each been named captains. … Just a sophomore, Landman could be considered the hardest working runner on the team. “He’s one of those kids that, if you clone the work ethic and attach it to those who have more natural ability, you be awesome all the time,” boys coach Gary Mailloux said. “He’s talented and he’s such a committed athlete.” … The Spartan boys have finished second in the Eastern Dakota Conference and seventh at state for two-consecutive seasons. … The Spartan boys could have up to 30 runners out from grades 7-12. … Akon, Sem and Olivier were all-conference selections a year ago. … The North girls return a pair of all-conference runners in Roche and Plecity. Roche finished 17th, and Plecity 20th at the EDC meet. … The Spartans need to replace the consistency of graduated Tara Ness, who finished 24th at the EDC meet. … Seventh-graders Paige Holman and Katie Reinholz could be rising stars at North. … Walker said South and West Fargo are the favorites in the EDC. “That third spot behind South and West Fargo would be a good position for us,” Walker said.

Fargo Shanley-Oak Grove

- Coach: Jaclyn Petik (boys and girls, second year)

- Boys to watch: Scott Anderson, Sr.; Dana Naylor, So.; Chris Savageau, Jr.; Austin Battles, So.; Andy Rothfusz, Jr.; Daniel Naylor, So.

- Girls to watch: Sadie Rivard, So.; Mikayla Forness, 8th; Lora Remus, 8th; Tatum Holt, 7th; Alex Backlund, seventh.

- Fast facts: Shanley-Oak Grove lost No.1 runner Maddie Strandemo when she moved to Washington, D.C., this summer. Strandemo finished 28th at state. … The Deacons lost three of their top six runners from last season. … Shanley-Oak Grove has almost 40 runners out for the team. Petik expects both teams to be in the top 4 in the Eastern Dakota Conference by the end of the year. … Petik picks West Fargo as the front runners of the East in the boys. … West Fargo and Fargo South are the favorites to win the East in the girls division, according to Petik.

Fargo South

- Coaches: Paul Lean (boys, second year); Lisa Svaleson (girls, fourth year)

- Boys to watch: Brad McConn, Sr.; Mitch Bauske, Sr.; Elliott Koch, So.; Aaron Wrolstad, Jr.

- Girls to watch: Laura Roesler, Jr.; Tarin Lachowitzer, Fr.; Lauryn Wilson, Jr.; Katie Schalow, Jr.; Erin Valenti, So.; Hannah Magrum, Fr.; Jen Storm, So.; Paige Rygg, Jr.

- Fast facts: McConn put on about 400 miles during the summer to prepare for the season, Lean said. McConn ran the 800-meter run, 1,600 and 3,200 during the track and field season. … Bauske will be in his first season of cross country. He competes in the 800 and 1,200 during the track season. … Koch broke into the Bruins starting lineup last year as a freshman. “He’s a guy that’s gotten into half marathons and 10K’s,” Lean said. “He’s a guy we’re going to have to lean on quite a bit.” … South finished fourth in the Eastern Dakota Conference and ninth at state last year. … Wrolstad has been in the Bruins’ cross country program since he was a seventh-grader. “This year, we’re hoping to get into the top 3 of the conference,” Lean said. … Lachowitzer surprised many with a third-place finish at state last season. … Roesler is the two-time defending state champion. The Bruins track and field standout also finished second in seventh and eighth grade. … Despite its talented lineup, South finished second at state. “The girls are definitely working toward that,” Svaleson said. “The biggest thing for our cross country team is that we are not so much one individual. The whole team has been working to improve.” … The Bruins are working toward running at the Nike Cross Country Regionals after the season. The top two teams from that meet advance to nationals. “We had a number of girls who were state qualifiers last year in distance events in track and field, and a number of girls who were close,” Svaleson said. “That translates very well to cross country.”

West Fargo

- Coach: Joe Bailey (boys and girls, eighth year)

- Boys to watch: Jamison Gehrig, Jr.; Spencer Uetz, Jr.

- Girls to watch: Alissa Mears, Fr.; Ellie Grooters, Jr.; Britny Bucholz, So.; Leah Hermanson, 8th grade; Christine Baltezore, 8th grade

- Fast facts: Gehrig and Uetz are returning after all-conference performances a year ago. … Gehrig finished 12th at the state meet, Uetz was 12th at the Eastern Dakota Conference meet. … The boys team finished third in the EDC and eighth at state. The team was 15 points out of fifth at the state meet. “We’ll be young again,” Bailey said. “We have two juniors, but we also have some eighth, ninth and 10th-graders that will be running to fill in those other top-three places. We have several young kids, but that’s a good thing.” … Grooters finished 8th in the EDC and 19th at state for the girls. She is a two-time state hurdles champion. “She is that first name of our four returners,” Bailey said. … Bucholz was 20th, and Hermanson 23rd at state last year. “We’re certainly looking forward to this year,” Bailey said. “I think that we should be in contention for the top couple spots in the conference in both boys and girls. And hopefully we can be in that top 5 trophy range at the state meet.”

Here are the Grand Forks Metro capsules from the Grand Forks Herald:

Central boys

Coach: Sean Allan.

2007 finish: First in East Region, sixth at state.
RELATED CONTENT
Tom Miller Archive
Key returners: Jr. Mike Torrey (51st at state, all-conference); soph. Shane Harlow (31st at state, all-conference).

Top newcomers: Fr. Alex Torrey (62nd at state); fr. Paul Shafer (94th at state); fr. Tom Fisher; fr. Ben Houska; jr. Chris Lappe.

Coach Allan says: “We’re going to be a very young team. We’re going to have some very talented runners who had a lot of success at the middle school level. We’re going to see how they adjust to the longer race — high school races are about a mile farther than middle school. I think some of these kids will surprise some people. We’ll get better as the year goes on.”

Central girls

Coach: Sean Allan.

2007 finish: Fourth in East Region, sixth at state.

Key returners: Sr. Bobbie Sedlmajer (83rd at state, all-conference); sr. Sasha Campbell (88th at state); jr. Kaitlin Medal (43rd at state, all-conference); soph. Rebecca Fee (40th at state); soph. Jessica Lindsay (73rd at state); soph. Brittany Bunde (84th at state).

Top newcomers: Soph. Jaclyn Sand; eighth-grader Taylor Ray; eighth-grader Hannah Koch; eighth-grader Lauren McMillan.

Coach Allan says: “These eighth-graders are going to provide the depth that we didn’t have last year. This year we might have eight or nine different girls getting our top five spots from week to week. But we’re going to be deeper and more experienced than we were last year.”

Red River boys

Coach: Chris Douthit.

2007 finish: Fifth in East Region, 12th at state.

Key returners: Sr. Jake Moen (63rd at state, all-conference); jr. Alex Bakken (55th at state); soph. Jordan Carlson; soph. Francis Mendee.

Top newcomers: Jr. Alex Kloster; soph. Nick Carlson; fr. James Dokken.

Coach Douthit says: “Overall, we’re a younger team. We have some experience with Jake and with Francis. I think it would be a nice goal to finish in the top half of the region. We’re a bit inexperienced, but hopefully our leaders and some young guys come through.”

Red River girls

Coach: Chris Douthit.

2007 finish: Third in East Region, 12th at state.

Key returners: Sr. Laura Dahlstrom (111th at state); sr. Jocelyn Fetsch (34th at state, all-conference); soph. Erin Wysocki (86th at state); soph. Monica Rustvang; soph. Erin McLeod (58th at state, all-conference); soph. Ashley Zeitvogel (78th at state).

Top newcomers: Jr. Daniele Zeitvogel; fr. Rachel Todhunter.

Coach Douthit says: “This team isn’t as young as our boys team. We think if everyone works hard we can get third in the region. I think top three is doable. I think our strength is that we have above-average competitors who know what it takes.”

...because she isn't the best runner in the state of Class A yet!! She got 5th at the Jamestown "Orr"iginals meet and she didn't look like she was in the best of shape; especially after a summer of 800s and not the miles that you need to be successful in XC!! She will move...DON'T WORRY about that...just give it time! She will be one of the Top 2 come EDC time (her and Allissa Mears, WF)!
