So MN Made the change...should ND do the same this season?

I don't think that there is any doubt. The midwest used to be one of the last 4k holdouts and now it seems that almost everyone is switching over. There really is no reason that girls don't run the same distance that the boys do. Championship distances in college are very different for men and women and that doesn't make sense either. I for one think that it is time to make the switch.

I don't mind the difference although I agree that it'll be changed soon to meet national standards.

I think part of it comes from the need to routinely use JH girls in ND (and other states). A 5k is obviously much tougher on their body than the shorter distances. Running a 4k over the course of a six-year career may extend their running life?

South Dakota recently voted to move girls to 5000 meters. Leaves ND as about the only one left. IA and MN already switched. I think it might be time for us to make the switch.

There are 3 states that haven't made the change:
Oklahoma (3.2k)
Texas (3.2k for 4 lower classes; 5k for top 2)
North Dakota (4k)

I hear that it is happening next year. In 2016 the girls will run a 5K in North Dakota!

When does the CC Advisory meeting happen? Just wondering when they make the move to a 5K official. Thanks.

The word all year was that the move was going to be made...if it doesn't we're just setting our XC athletes back in the recruiting world.

Somebody please enlighten me as to why this is such a great thing for women's running. Women train usually at a lower mileage than men, and yet we expect them to handle the same race distance? This will only hurt the small schools that have trouble fielding five runners for the region/state meets.

I understand this is all in the name of "equality", but how about equality of time? Women's 4k times are usually around a minute faster than guy's 5k times when looking through the high school results, so what if women ran a 4.2k? Then, in the name of equality, women and men would run an equal amount of time, which would more accurately reflect training differences than distance. I honestly don't understand what this whole push is about except for this supposed 'equality'.

I could care less if they run 4k or 5k but since all/nearly all other states are running 5k it hurts for recruiting and running post-season events like Nike and Footlocker. Also eases the transition to college for those that go on.

Sounds like all it has to do is be passed by the NDHSAA Executive Board at the January meeting and the change will be made. Advisory Committee had great support for the move up to a 5K at the end of the season.
