Nike Heartland Regionals

Postby hoops4lyf40 » Mon Oct 14, 2019 4:27 pm

Does anyone know what schools/individuals, if any, will be headed to Sioux Falls for the Nike Heartland Regionals this year? It is set for November 11 at Yankton Trail Park.

If so, do you know which Race/Division?

Any thoughts/opinions on the course/race/etc.

Lots of questions to unpack. There are a lot of different races during the day, and it's coach's choice who gets entered other than the rising stars and championship divisions.

Start here: https://nxrhl.runnerspace.com/eprofile. ... ent_id=300

The course is typically very fast.

Yea sorry for the multiple questions. Just trying to get the conversation started. And thanks for the link.

Have race results always been merged for rewards? I can’t recall.

Yes the course is very flat, if it’s the same course I ran once upon a time. It is the same location at least. I heard that the course is designed so as to be replicated across the country. Is this true? If so, that’s really cool, and smart, allowing for a comparison across the country, excluding weather and altitude. Does the course still include man made hills and hay bails as obstacles/challenges?

They used to do a T-shirt exchange which is also pretty fun. I wonder if that is still a thing!

Enjoy the hand full of additional questions! Haha

Last year the tee shirt exchange was still happening...

Last year there were no man made hills or bails... the only obstacles/challenges were a hard wind and cold...

There is an "All Comers Race"... you can relive your glory days and run that :D I did it last year and it was a good time!

I know Patrick Wrigley (Shiloh) and Noah Rolfe (Stanley) will be competing at Nike Heartland Regionals. Not sure of any others at this time.

I believe Sean Korsmo (Bismarck), Brady Yoder (Dickinson), and Micade Schumway (Williston) are all planning on competing. Williston and Bismarck usually take teams down.

Davies & the GF schools tend to go down as well...North & Jamestown have too over the years.

I see several athletes have "competed" in a virtual NXR meet, during season. Do you think NDHSAA will take action?

Nothing against it in this year's regulations...

ALSO only rule in by-laws is for road races...nothing about virtual races.

It isn't an easy decison but the right one would be to take action and uphold the rules.

Before season began all coaching staff received instructions from NDHSAA informing them that "virtual races" are indeed against regulations and not to allow athletes to participate in them. A phone call to the NDHSAA earlier this week verified that.

It has always been well understood that you cannot participate in a non-school event during the season of the sport you are participating in. The surface you run on doesn't make a difference.

Athletes are also only allowed to compete on a school team during the season of that sport. So, if an athelete competes for a club team during the season that is a violation of the rule. It appears that every athlete that ran NXV did so on a club team. Even had they ran for their school team it is still against the rules since it is not a school event.

NDHSAA states, "Students may compete only on a school team during the high school season of that sport. Violation of the regulation results in the loss of eligibility for six contests or remainder of the season, whichever is less, for each violation in that sport."

https://ndhsaa.com/files/Constitution_and_ByLaws.pdf

The Constitution and Bylaws have a great Q & A section and this question is addressed in it, page 28 is the Q & A and page and page 48 shows the actual rule(s). Those page numbers are pdf page numbers and may be different depending upon what pdf reader you use.

“Date: August 7, 2020
Virtual Road Races
It was brought to the attention of the staff at the NDHSAA Office this week, the presence of virtual road races (ie Fargo Marathon gets cancelled, instead of running the actual race, athletes can register, send in times and receive awards and rankings). The NDHSAA Board discussed this today, and they confirmed that these type of virtual races are not allowed during the high school cross country season: "Virtual road races during the cross country season were discussed. The Board directed staff to remind coaches that non-school sponsored road races of any kind are not allowed during the NDHSAA cross country season." Just wanted to make sure coaches were aware prior to the start of our season. Make sure you pass along to your athletes. Justin Fletschock NDHSAA”

They made the rule... now we’ll see if it’s enforced. Tough spot to be in, with the states top runner in the mix.

Haha, no problem. In my spare time I search orginization bylaws, not actually.

Off topic, this came to mind earlier this week when I was on the board lookin around, you put in a tremendous amount of time keeping everyone up to day with coaches polls, meet results, etc., thank you for doing that I am sure it is time consuming, it is appreciated very much.

I don't envy NDHSAA in this position, however, the rules in place will support their decision to enforce them and most people should understand that. I believe the more difficult choice would be to not enforce the rules, that sets a poor example for kids that the rules don't need to be followed, or only pertain to certain athletes.

There are several runners from WDA and EDC that are facing violations that will end their seasons and ultimately will affect their teams as well. I enjoy watching many of those runners, a very talented bunch. This is truly an unfortunate situation, we will wait to see how it is addressed.

I completely agree. I would imagine we won’t hear anything directly from the NDHSAA on this, but I assume we’ll know if they made a decision after this weekends regionals conclude.

There are a couple of different situations happening that I can see. One is entering a result to NXV that was achieved during a NDSHAA sanctioned race. The other, more concerning situation, is creating an entirely different race, running it as a club team member, and entering it to NXV.

The first *could* be punished as a violation of the spirit of the policy, the second *should* be punished as a straight up violation.

I can't believe the NDHSAA would actually suspend these kids. Unfortunately it is the right thing to do but i doubt they will do it this late in the season.

I don't have a problem with it, as I wouldn't wish that on any runner or team. As with any rule, if it isn't going to be enforced consistently, it shouldn't be a rule.

I completely agree that I would hate to see the athletes punished. However, 2 rules were broken (virtual competition, and competing for club team)… I cant say that I 100% agree with the rules, I mean who does... but nonetheless rules are meant to be followed/enforced. If they aren't going to be followed or enforced... why are they in place?

I agree too. I understand wanting to let the kids finish (especially this year being a goofy year) but then just get rid of the rule? I have heard of track athletes getting suspended for a period of time for competing in non-sanctioned out of state events so that type of rule has been enforced before.
