Who are the best wrestlers in the state this year?  Is any one of them head and shoulders above the others?

Class A Scott Glasser Bismarck
Class B John Koistinen Rolla Rock Lake

Don't think there has been anyone close to beating Koistinen this year, haven't heard much about Glasser but he's a stud so im taking it he's doing just fine.

Koistinen has had some close matches with justin weigel from napoleon.  Jordan Dewald from napoleon is also a tough class b wrestler.

I couldn't believe the scores Napoleon was posting in the tournaments.  They must have a once in a lifetime type team, for a school that size.

Actually they've had a once in a lifetime team for the past 5 years as they are 4 time defending Class "B" Dual and Individual State Champions.

They placed 2nd in a very prestigious Bismarck Rotary tournament, higher than any class "A" team in the state.

Some of the top individual wrestlers in the state are:

Scott Glasser- Going for a 5th straight state title (only 2 others ever, he would be the first in class "A") He also won the Minnesota X-mas tourny (thought of as harder than State) and won the Junior Nationals last spring for all HS Juniors in the nation. Going to wrestle for the Gophers next year

John Basting- Tremendous wrestler who is a multiple state placer. Placed second in last year's junior national tournament in his respective weight (behind Glasser) and also finished second at state (behind Glasser) but this year he is in a different weight and looks to contend for his own title. announced plans to wrestle at Cornell next year.

Jake Mellmer- 2 or 3X state champion. Tough to compete with. has done very well this year and in the past. Also plans to wrestle for the Gophers next year.

Jon Koistenen. 3rd at state as 8th grader, 2nd as 9 and 10th grader, State champ as a junior and undefeated so far this year as a senior as he tries to repeat as a state champ. about as technically sound as they come. great strength and has tremendous conditioning.

Just a few other returning state champs that i can think of off the top of my head.

Corey Ulmer
Josiah Simburger
Darrin Hohbein
Tyler Steinwand
Casey Buchholtz
Jordan Dewald
Heath Roberts
Anthony Cross
Chris Lundberg
Kriss McCleary

As a Bison fan, I wonder how many of these guys have a chance at wrestling for them.  It seems like all the best guys, still go to the Gophers.  The Bison have a good tradition, they are championship eligible soon, and families can still watch them compete.  I hope Bucky  can keep the best talent in state.

Bucky should just quit as coach--he doesnt teach or coach anymore anyways--that is most likely the real reason why wrestlers dont go to NDSU. I know of some wrestlers that wrestled at NDSU before transferring and this was the sentiment.

At 215 Matt Martin of DL should have a year like Brenden Flynn did and that would be just great.

Martin just lost his first match of the season to a kid from Red Lake County Central from MN @ the Larimore Tournament in the Finals. he's probably something liek 22-1 right now

Sean Ballard, also of DL is currently still undefeated at upwards to 30-0

John Basting, in the Finals at Larimore on Saturday got a big win... The win tied him for #1 all time in career wins in ND history! He's got a dual this week against RIVAL GFC where he will look to take sole possesion of the record! he's also got Regionals and State to add a few matches to his mark.

I'm not positive on any of those questions but for some reason I want to say Travis Lang and Ben Imdieke may have been previously tied for the record (unless Levi Haugen broke it last year... I know he beat career pins record) I think the record is upwards to 225-230ish.

I know last year John was a runner-up to Scott Glasser (who must have a pile of wins as well, he's a 4X State Champ who is looking for a 5th) and interestingly these two were not only #1-2 in the state, but they both wrestled in the Juniors National tournament and placed 1 and 2 respectively in that tournament as well. Glasser is currently at 160 pounds (ranked 1st) and Basting is at 145 (also ranked 1st) ahead of Casey Hanson and Shawn Sneva (2nd and 3rd ranked)

Travis Lang is listed as having 224 wins which is the class A record (Tied by John Basting)  Levi Haugan is listed with 234 wins in Class B.

This is a partial (i would estimate about 75-80%) list of ND's 100 Wins Club which i guess i would compare to 1,000 career points in basketball. Grand Forks Central head wrestling coach Matt Berglund started compiling this list last year. There are obviously some missing as you can see neither Basting (Phil or John) or Haugan are on this list.

With the addition of Harvey, we have another over the 200 win mark. Keep them coming. (mberglund @gfschools.org)

Haugen has the ND all-time wins record at 234. He also has the Class B pins record at 141 I believe.

I really believe you have to give credit where credit is due...for the first time..i watched Adam Lynnes of West Fargo wrestle...i truly believe he will be one of the guys to beat in state at 171 weight class..he just took 1st place in the EDC Regional Tournament.

A wrestler to watch in the next 3 years is freshman Jeff McDougall from Fargo North.  I saw this kid wrestle against South at 152 and this kid is jacked.  He qualified 5th this year for state at either 145 or 152.  Very athletic and very strong, fun to watch.

McDougal is a sophomore at Fargo North, wrestled 145, and won atleast 1 match @ state. Sorry but the kid just doesn't fit the hype"jacked". Just my opinion though

They have McDougall as a sophomore on the state tournament bracket website. Was 16-21 coming into the state tournament, lost first round match to eventual state champion #1 seed John Bastings. Beat Chris Hauge from Mandan and then lost too John Hausauer from Bismarck. Hausauer was the #2 in the tournament so he wrestled some good competition it looked like.

Luke Mellmer from Dickinson High is a natural wrestler. All three of his brothers(Eric, Marc, and Jake) were all numerous state champs. Luke just came off his own state championship last year. Hopefully can do it again.

Can anyone beat sean ballard from DL this year... last year he took 2nd at state and was only a sophmore

This year he is bout same weight 145 or 150 and maxed out at 320 on the bench... pretty sick for a junior to throw up that much weight for as small as he is
