some random thoughts from the state b baseball tournament...

the midkota/thompson game was absolutely great. jordan grover was overpowering, as was tyler kjemhus. grover walked three in the first inning while striking out the side...pretty interesting to see him settle down as the inning went on. midkota's baseball team reminds me a lot of mayville's basketball team...they equal your effort for a bit and then do one or two little things that put you in a hole that you can't get out of.

chris heins looked impressive. he had four strikeouts in the last five outs and seemed to get stronger as the game went along. steve berreth has few to no wasted movements behind the plate...he seems to just move well as a catcher. bakkum has a tweaked hip or something...it looked like he injured it during his first (maybe second) at bat. sounds like he will just play through it. i thought rollete just never seemed to be able to shake off that they were playing at state...waaaay to many errors, but i think tomorrow you would be able to see the team that got there versus the team that was out there today.

weidler and huettl were impressive. they absolutely dominated the game whenever they were apart of it. felt bad for huettl...at the end of the game you could see he was struggling and i kept waiting for them to go to a reliever and it is too bad that a really solid beginning part of the game was turned into a loss. i thought eric henke was going to jump out of jack brown stadium when he scored the game-winner. that moment is what high school sports (though really, any sports) is all about.

lamoure can hit the ball. they were lacing just about everything. the first 5 innings took 2 hours...the last two took about 39 minutes. wold hit a home run just under halfway up the pole in left field. a SHOT. ben watkins can hit the ball and he is only a soph....4-for-5 or something like that. long game that really seemed to struggle a lot out of both teams physically and emotionally until wold's home run.

I think Steele set a record for most batteries in a title game. heh. I thought they'd start Schwab, then Heins and Bakkum, maybe Berreth in there somewhere briefly while bases were empty. I also thought they'd have to get an early lead and hang on for dear life at the end. Wrong on both counts. It's Steele's and the old Dawson's first titles in any sports, congrats!

are you sayin Steele wouldnt have won state if Midkota didnt beat Thompson?  Steele simply beat who was in front of them.

I would of loved to see a Thompson vs Steele matchup. Steele played some good baseball and got by there opponents. Thompson had a tough go of it in the 1st game vs Midkota but then showed how they could really play in there last 2 games. You cant take any team lightly come tournament time thats why they play the game.

Might have been a different story if Midkota sat Grover vs. Thompson. Coulda meant a Thompson vs. Steele matchup. Or if Midkota still won, Steele would have gotten Grover.

Granted, but their bats weren't as active as other teams. I wondered if Langdon regretted using their ace on Friday.

I would like to see the state tourney go to double elimination. A team runs into a good pitcher and they are out of  it. If i'm not misstaken all region tour are double so why not state?
