Top Pitchers for the 8 State bound tourney teams

Postby magic715 » Wed May 24, 2006 1:08 pm

Wondering who the top pitchers are from each of the 8 teams that make it to state, and what grade, for Bishop Ryan:

1) Jordan Huettl (Sr)

2) Brooks Backes (So)

3) Clay Kallias (So)

4) Braden Bosch (Sr)

Steele

1 - 4   Heins, Bakkum, Schwab, Berreth

any can pitch against any team.  No "true" ace.

Steele (before region tourney)
ERA  Inn  Player (W-L)
1.43 29.3 Bakkum (5-2, 42 SO, 21 BB)
2.54 19.3 Berreth (4-1, 36 SO, 8 BB)
3.00 25.7 Schwab (5-0, 10 SO, 5 BB)
3.25 28.0 Heins (5-0, 36 SO, 34 BB)
2.25 18.7 four others (4-0, 22 SO, 10 BB)

Looks like Steele considers Bakkum & Berreth their top pitchers, on the mound for the toughest opponents. Schwab allows a lot of hits and Heins walks batters about as often, might see one of them start against Rolette to save innings for B&B.

I'm from Washburn and I would have to say that, Heins is either Steele's ace or #2 two behind bakkum. It is really close. The walks may not look like it. He does not give up many hits, and throws decent speed.

I notice he's pitched a lot more innings. He beats Berreth on hits allowed per inning by quite a bit, tho walks put him behind for putting guys on base. His ERA is worse, but that could from from going against better teams. Heins has a lot more K's, too.

if those stats up there are correct its hard to believe an Ace or #2 pitcher can have more walks than innings pitched(speaking of Heins)....and even if this is correct, the competition at state is too good to not take advantage of these mistakes and free baserunners

You guys don't have to believe me. I'm just letting you know the facts. This is kid is alright. If i remember right he threw twice against velva early and once agianst langdon, now once against washburn. they are some decent teams. I'm just letting you guys know when he shows up that he is a pretty good player.

I will agree Heins is a good player.  With no disrespect to "B & B" they are both great players but how can a teams 1-2 be the only 2 with losses?  The ERAs are lower but what counts in the long run is if the pitcher gets the W or the L.

those top 2 pitchers are most likely the ones to pitch against the better teams who could beat them....but i see what u mean

I semi-believe on Heins, 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA last year. Berreth is the starting catcher, first year of pitching. B&B started against Washburn at home and away. Heins is an outfielder, pitcher and catches when Berreth throws. Maybe Heins hit another level recently.

Low ERA with more losses could be from dead bats, the team came up against an ace, or the pitcher has an occasional stinker of a game.

Berreth and Schwab pitched against Washburn both times during the season.  Bakkum didnt see them until tourney time when he threw10 or 11 innings against them.  Heins also didnt see them until tourney.

Bakkum pitched against Velva twice, Langdon (came in for schwab to get the save), Washburn twice in the tournament (one to get a save), and once against Midkota and lost 2-1 andwalked 6 in home opener against velva in 1/3 of an inning (not a good way to start a year)

OOOO that's tough. I think it's off speed side-arm that's gets him in trouble. Didn't his coaches ever tell him to throw over the top? More velocity. Come on....

the side arm pitch gives the batters a different angle to look at.  Pitching isnt all about how hard you throw, also gotta keep teh batters off balance.

LLM will likely send three starters to the hill during the tournament, Ben Watkins, Ben Holen and Brett Berry.

Watkins, a sophomore, leads the team with a 5-0 record and has a 2.22 earned run average.

“He has probably been our most consistent pitcher all year,â€Â

Are any of the 3 LLM pitchers overpowering?
