Can someone please explain how a .473 batting average, 35 RBI, 38 Runs, 16 stolen bases, 15 extra base hits, .784 SLG and 2 HR's only gets on you on the 2nd Team All-State?

Also how a .441 batting average, 22 RBI, 28 Runs, 8 extra base hits, 10 stolen bases, 5-0 pitching record with a .000 ERA and 2 Wins in the State Tournament doesn't even get you on the list.

These numbers are better than most of the Senior Athletes from several regions. I'm not sure how these players are chosen, but it seems to me like you make the team one year and you're guaranteed a spot the following year. Come on coaches, give credit where credit is due.

So do you actually not know how they're chosen or do the coaches choose? you blame the coaches at the end of your post.

I know the coaches nominate and vote on the regional level, but I have no idea what happens beyond that for the All-State Team. It looks to me like the senior athletes of the year from each region are on the First Team.

If anyone knows the season stats for the other players, please add them. I'm not trying to dis-credit any of the players on these teams. I'm sure they're all really good players. I'm just wondering how talented players get ignored or the short end of the deal, maybe because they are just younger.

If you contact your local head coach or athletic director they should be able to explain the All-State selection process. If anyone has information regarding the selection process, please share.

From Grand Forks Herald (6/6/17):

Here's a look at all of the area all-state picks.

• Hankey, first team: The co-Region 4 senior player of the year batted .424 with a team-leading six home runs, as well as 33 RBI, 30 runs and 12 stolen bases. He had 17 home runs, 156 RBI and 56 steals in his six-year prep career.

• Zavalney, second team: The sophomore batted .473 with 15 extra-base hits, including two home runs, and led the Aggies in RBI (35), runs (38) and stolen bases (16).

• Calen Schwabe, Thompson, first team: Schwabe is a repeat first-team all-stater. This season he batted .457 with 33 runs, 15 RBI and 12 steals. He had a 4-0 record on the mound with a 0.74 ERA.

• Cadyn Schwabe, Thompson, first team: The sophomore moves up after being a second-team pick in 2016. Schwabe batted .500 with 32 runs, 14 RBI, a team-leading 10 extra-base hits and was 24-for-24 on steal attempts. He had a 4-0 pitching record with a 0.95 ERA.

• Marcus Hughes, Thompson, second team: The sophomore batted .467 with 25 runs, 23 RBI and 17 steals. He was 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA pitching.

• Marcus Niemann, Grafton, second team: The junior is a repeat second-team pick. Niemann had a .405 batting average with two home runs, 21 runs and 22 RBI. He had a 2-3 pitching record with 44 strikeouts in 30.2 innings.

• Lucas Mohn, Hatton-Northwood, first team: The Region 2 senior player of the year hit .462 with five home runs, 19 RBI and 25 runs. He was 4-0 pitching with two saves and a 1.15 ERA. In 30.1 innings, Mohn struck out 50 batters.

• Jayden Komrosky, North Star, first team: The Region 5 senior player of the year was 3-1 on the mound with a 0.62 earned run average. He struck out 67 batters in 33.2 innings. Komrosky batted .364. He's a repeat first-team pick.

I'm guessing Zavalney didn't make it because he's sophomore.

I'd love to see the all region teams.

Every region rep nominates their 2 kids for 1st team, every region is guaranteed 2 spots if they show up to the meeting. If they don't show up then those spots are freed up and the coaches can suggest players from their region or any region. After that usually you end up with another 1-2 from every region to select the 2nd team. Traditionally every region shows up with a list of 4-5 kids.

There is no voting on as say in football, even football is very politicy once you go to the state meeting, the east and west try to have even numbers on either side even if one region is really stacked with kids.

8 regions with 4 picks a piece you get 32, I think I see this year 33 on the list?

It works sort of how All-Region in a lot of regions works as well. 1st place is guaranteed a certain amount of selections, 2nd place gets a certain amount, and so on except each region is guaranteed a certain amount of slots as long as they show up to the meeting. You'd be amazed at how much regions just don't show up...

The reason there was 33 players was because one player was not included on the original list of selections. Adam Zavalney from PRFL was not one of the 4-5 kids selected from Region 4. With a .473 batting average, 35 RBI, 38 Runs, 16 stolen bases, 15 extra base hits, .784 SLG, 2 HR's and also a 2nd yr. All Region Player, he was not included in the final list of 32 players. Again not taking away from any of the other players, the top player from Region 4 and potentially one of the 3 top players in the entire state was not originally picked to be on the 32 player All-State Team.

That is the fault of his Region coaches not putting him in their top 4 players then. Those do not go to a coach wide vote to rank the top 32 players. Each region gets there 4 and in this case a 5th which may have been deservedly so but a lot of players from other regions but up some great numbers as well... a shame the news paper couldn't get a lot of those stats.

The only team to seem to upload all their stats was Beulah...would make it a lot easier if every team just synced them there or somewhere for that matter. No one single paper seems to have all the stats, and some didn't even report the all state selections...

Mikey Morris: Beulah .510, 1 HR, 17 R, 19 RBI, 4 appearances 0.0 ERA

Do you really think that all the stats on here are accurate? Really depends on who is doing them for the teams.
Can't base All State on just stats.

If you are going to compare players that is about the only way, not many people can see all the teams play and give you an accurate depiction of who should or shouldn't be all state otherwise.

That is probably sort of why every region gets 4 on the team...

Is there any reason to believe that any of these players are undeserving? I guess if anyone is thinking numbers are inflated, I would check what kind of competition they came against. I would say one down side to this whole process is that the player selection process is done before regional competition begins. I think the real credit should be given to the players that excel against good competition. It's to bad that really good players in a strong region are getting left out because of the weaker regions.

The issue is the same as in all sports...you do not see every athlete throughout the season...so All-State tends to become all about the stats.

Errors VS Hits. I've seen some calls that were probably errors, but were scored as hits. Depending on who is scoring, this can vary a lot based only on judgement. I dont think there is flagrant padding of stats, but this is a big gray area that can make a big difference in batting averages.

Also, for those who are wondering--DLB players on state.

Vendsel - .459 and a very low ERA -- good defensive 1st base
Grandy - .460 2 HR and good defensive catcher

Good thing there are about 100 other stats besides hits. The nice thing with today's technology is that any team could have access to a simple app that does stats. Our teams use GameChanger and it works great.

Why not?

1) you mentioned this, but the level competition
2) tiny sample sizes
3) you ignore defense
4) most of the stats you keep mentioning are dependent on your teammates and the amount of games you play

Coaches in ND are LAZY. In all sports. This is the worst state in the union for recording stats. And I blame it on LAZY coaches. Plane and simple. This may change as many of the older coaches retire and new younger coaches take over, but it will require some culture and attitude change from the top.
