Packers split with Roughriders

By Brent Rogness

West Fargo's baseball team split a pair of extra-inning games with Grand Forks Red River Thursday afternoon.

The Packers scored two runs in the seventh to force a 5-5 tie, but surrendered five runs in the eighth and fell 10-7 in game one.

West Fargo's Tyrel Thorson and Matt Renfrew--the 8-9 hitters in the Packer lineup--combined to go 6-7 with six singles and four runs scored in the first game.

Red River carried their momentum into the early innings of the second game, rattling off four runs in the first inning.

But West Fargo pitcher Matt Kulesa recovered to give up just one run through the next seven innings, and the Packers rallied to force a second game into extra frame. The comeback was highlighted by a three-run fourth inning.

The Packers sealed the game in the eighth inning when Brandon Reber scored on a hit by Josh Green that was fumbled by Red River's second baseman.

GAME ONE

GFRR          001 013 05– 10 13 2

West Fargo   000 021 22– 7 15 2

David Spies and Sadler. Rheault, Hensly (2), Odegard (7) Salquist (8) and Thorson. W–Spies. L–Odegard.

GAME TWO

GFRR         410 000 00– 5 4 3

West Fargo 101 300 01– 6 12 2

Melland, Palmiscino (4) and Sadler. Matt Kulesa and Schroeder. W–Kulesa (1-2). L–Melland.

Tough way to lose game one. Whats going on with West Fargo they were in it with North and Red River are they better than people expected them to be. Also i was reading the box score and it seems like a weird situation to take the starter out in game one he threw one inning of 0 runs and got taken out during the second. Seems weird to me. Any info on that please explain

Garrett Sondrol's bases-loaded home run in the top of the fifth inning helped Grand Forks Red River beat Devils Lake 7-3. The game in Devils Lake was called after five innings due to inclement weather. Winning pitcher Sean Potter improved to 4-0 for the Roughriders (6-4 in EDC, 6-7 overall). Josh Greene had a home run and drove in all three Devils Lake runs.
