1991 or 1992? St. Mary's. I don't remember the exact date but it was the early 90's when South won state and just dominated the competition. They beat St. Mary's in the regular season and the state championship and it was their two closest games the whole season. This South was one of the best ever and they were ranked Nationally. So I would say St. Marys that year was the best to not win state.

A couple of good ones were the Grand Forks Central teams from 1996 and 2004, both of which lost to South in the championship game. The 1996 team was quarterbacked by jr. Brooks Bollinger and had a number of outstanding players, including Greg Mask, Mickey Eley, Casey Blue and Dan Schill. The 2004 team included basically all the players who went on to win state in 2005 (Landry, Kasowski, Bakke, et al.), PLUS Ryan Chappell and Jake Marto.

then you have to say the 2004 bismarck high team is in there to... thateither team could have won that semi final game and it probably was one of if the the best high school football games in north dakota's history 49-48 in overtime with a blocked feild goal that would have won the game at the end... great game between 2 very good teams!
