New England to co-op with Trinity

The teams in 9 Man

A story from the Forum via the Bismarck Tribune:

Trinity school boards have approved a three-year agreement for a high school football cooperative.
New England, a one-time powerhouse in 9-man football, has been suffering from declining enrollment. Last fall, the school had only 35 boys in high school, the smallest male enrollment of any 9-man school in the state.

Trinity plays in the AA 11-man ranks.

New England Superintendent Noel Lunde said it was a tough but unavoidable decision.

"It'll be strange" when fall rolls around without football in town, he said. "You hate to see it happen, but it's going to happen more."

Some New England athletes had expressed a desire to play with Mott-Regent. Myron Schweitzer, superintendent of that school, said the additional athletes would have bumped the school into 11-man, at least for a couple of years, and he did not think the community wanted that.

The North Dakota High School Activities Association must still approve the new co-op. The association is expected to review the application at its Jan. 28 meeting.

Over the course of the last couple of years I can't think of very many positives that have come out of New England.  School finances, great coaches and teachers retiring or moving on to other schools, as fun as it is to relive the glory years it is very hard to associate with the teams since all the faces that helped mold the great tradition are gone.
