Week 8- What To Watch!

Postby ChickenNuggets » Sun Oct 02, 2022 11:09 am

The final week of the regular season is upon us! 7 playoff spots are already locked, which means that 17 playoff spots are up for grabs this week and many games will have huge impacts on the way the bracket unfolds for next week's first round. Here are the games with the biggest impacts on the playoffs!

Region 1-
6-1 Wyndmere/Lidgerwood @ 7-0 LaMoure/L/M

Simply put its the Region 1 Championship game. It should be a good one at that. W/L's only blemish came week 1 at MPCG. LaMoure very nearly took a loss to that same MPCG team but gutted out a win. Midco also mentioned that after the MPCG Game that LaMoure may not have their QB for a couple weeks. If he is out it could make things even tighter. With that said, until LaMoure is defeated it's hard to pick against them. I'll take the Loboes at home to win 30-24

Region 2-
5-2 Maple River @ 6-1 Mayport CG

Intriguing match-up as the Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page co-op from last year split and the FS kids are at MPCG while the HP kids are part of the Maple River Co-op. I'm sure it will be fun for those kids who were teammates a year ago to play against each other for a Region title! I can't pick against MPCG though, especially at home. I"ll take MPCG in a big way- Patriots win 48-12

Region 3-
7-0 Cavalier @ 5-2 North Border

Both teams are 3-0 in the region. It's a rivalry game, it's a region championship as well! Both teams have some tremendous playmakers, but I'll take the tradition in this one. Cavalier hasn't lost a regular season game since 2018. My pick is the Tornadoes 38-22

Region 4-
5-2 Four Winds @ 7-0 North Prairie

It is just unreal to me how this one sets up. Four Winds is 5-2 on the season and in a position where a win would give them the Region 4 championship. On the flip side, Four winds is 5-2 on the season and in a position where a loss in this game would mean they are most likely OUT of the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Indians, that second scenario is the one that I see more than likely unfolding in the season's final week. I'll take North Prairie to win 42-20

Region 7-
5-2 St. John @ 5-2 Westhope/Newburg/Glenburn

Both teams are 5-2 and 3-0 in the region. It's a winner take all game for the Region 7 crown. St. John took 2 losses to open the season and have now won 5 straight. WNG has a pair of losses to North Prairie and Divide County. This, to me, might just be the game of the week and the toughest of these Region Championship games to pick! When in doubt, pick the home team. I'll take WNG to win 30-26.

Region 8-
5-2 Tioga @ 7-0 Divide County

Divide County is in a position where if they win they are the region champions, but also, most likely, if they lose by 11 or less they are the region champions. Tioga would be guaranteed the Region Championship with a win by 12 or more points or any win and a Surrey loss. With that said, Divide County has been dominant all season and I don't see them losing this one. I'll take the Maroons to win a region title. DC wins 48-22

That's pretty crazy.

According to my calculations, dating back to the 1983 season, they are currently 348-94.

That is 40 seasons
38 seasons with winning records, 2 with losing records.
79% winning percentage.

If there were a school to be nominated "Football Tradition King" in North Dakota....it would be Cavalier, right?

The big 3 in my opinion would be (records since 1975)

1. Velva (390-97) 10 titles
2. Linton (377-109) 6 titles
3. Cavalier (388-126) 6 titles

9 combined losing seasons
22 combined titles
37 combined title game appearances

I think you can flip 2 and 3 pretty easily, but IMO Velva stands alone on top.

I would agree ---those stats don't lie.

How about "Most Dominating Single Season vs Peers".

Year / School / Record / Points for - Points against

9-MAN:
2014 Cavalier Tornadoes 13-0 754-52

CLASS B:
1989 Beulah Miners 12-0 498-19

CLASS A:
2001 Dickinson Trinity Titans - 12-0 510-14
* this one could maybe have an asterisk by it. the private school thing is always debatable.

CLASS AA:
1990 Fargo South - 12-0 497-60

Dickinson Trinity was playing up in the 2nd highest class (where everyone wants them now) so one would think you could remove that *

That 2001 Dickinson Trinity team had 10 shutouts giving up only 8 points in the regular season and 6 in the playoffs. Might be one of the most impressive seasons ever in ND football!

The 2014 Cavalier team had the biggest point spread, but their 2013 year was ultra impressive also as they did not allow a single point until the playoffs.

That second highest class they were playing in then was not equivalent to the second highest class where everyone wants them now. That second highest class then had them playing teams like Killdeer, Hazen, Cavalier, Lisbon, Beulah, Bottineau, Rugby, DLB, and Carrington. Also Kindred and Central Cass that were not the size that they are now. There were very few teams in that division who were in the current 11A division- Valley City, Turtle Mountain, Watford City (And they were much smaller back then). I'm not saying that I think there should be an asterisk or that I feel one way or the other- Just pointing out that your comparison of the second highest division in ND Football now compared to the second highest division in ND Football in the early 2000's is Apples to Oranges.

I remember people talking about the 1989 Beulah team being the best team in the state that year, regardless of class.

I think as far as the most dominant season ever, DT in 2001 gets my vote. Cavalier put up video game numbers in 2014. DT only getting scored on in 2 games and having a combined playoff score of 140-6 in 3 games in very tough to top.

For those wondering where we are getting the stats...I assume we are all getting them from here:

http://northdakotahsfootball.altervista.org/

Odd fact about that site...it was made by a guy who had at the time when he started it, just moved to Valley City from Michigan. The state of Michigan, not the one in ND. No idea on his motive. It isn't monetary. Kudos and thank you to Evin Casey.
