Top 5 Match-ups of the week:

Central McLean @ Napoleon-
CM Gave New Salem all they wanted last night. New Salem pulled away late, but it was 20-20 midway through the 3rd quarter. If CM plays at this level again next week they could push Napoleon.
Prediction- Napoleon wins by scoring through the air.

South Border @ New Salem-
Pair of 3-0 teams squaring off. New Salem has defeated 3 quality teams so far and it doesn't really come as any surprise as they have been dubbed one of the 9-man favorites this year since the moment they came down from the 11-man ranks. South Border is much more surprising. I believe they were a 1-win team last year. Should be fun to watch
Prediction- New Salem wins a close game. 22-18

Hettinger/Scranton @ Grant County/Flasher-
Hettinger dropped their first game last night to South Border while GC/F picked up their first win in a tight one with Beach. There's a good chance that these teams could both be playoff teams in this region, so this matchup will go a long way in determining who the Region Champs are.
Prediction- Grant County/Flasher is getting it figured out and wins by 3-4 scores.

St. John @ TGU-
Both teams are 2-1. There are also a pair of 3-0 teams in this region (Bottineau and North Prairie). So this is a hugely important game for play-off implications. This should be one of the most competitive regions in the entire state and could likely have a "game of the week" type matchup every week. I think it will be a close one.
Prediction: TGU gets it done at home. 32-28

North :Star @ New Rockford-
These two teams have a combined 1-5 record right now, but take away the 3-0 Nelson County team and this region is a combined 1-10. My feeling is that these are the #2 and #3 teams coming out of this region and this game could determine who gets a 1st round home playoff game and who goes on the road. Theres a lot at stake.
Prediction- North Star gets it done on the road, through the air. 48-28

Top matchups:

- Benson County @ Bottineau: I mention this game not because I think it will be a great game but the story line of Bottineau being undefeated through 3 games after the struggles they have had lately is pretty cool. I think they keep rolling and win 40 to 16.

- South Border @ New Salem: This South Border teams shares my favorite story line of the early 9 man season with Bottineau. What a turn around for SB! Here is the test to find out how real deal it is. I think it ends up being a good game but when it comes down to it the experience in big games of New Salem wins out and they get a big win 36 to 28.

- Surrey @ MLS: Surrey was the pre-season favorite out west and maybe state wide. They have been sitting on a tough loss to Powers Lake for a long time now. They need to get their season back on track and prove they belong to be one of top dogs. MLS has film on how you can beat them and is looking to give themselves the inside track to the one seed in the region by knocking off Surrey. I think Surrey takes out a lot of frustration and explodes in this one. Surrey wins 40 to 12.

Score I saw was that NRS beat SJ 18-6. Is that correct? Then the records of these two games would be wrong. SJ would be 1-2 as well as NRS.

That is correct...this is a small example on why you cannot guess on results without having the results.

current system allowed them to opt down...they jumped at the chance (as did 2 other schools).

6 total schools opted down in the current plan. However, 5 of them were 9man in the prior plan as well. Botno was the only traditional 11man school that opted down to 9man.

However, looking at the 2022 plan it looks like Botno's time in 9man will be short lived. It shows that MPCG, Surrey, Tioga, and Hatton/Northwood are the only teams eligible to opt down.

I don't think I said it was surprising but if you had watched them play the last 5 years you wouldn't say that. There was a few years there they wouldn't have won more than a game even in 9 man (I don't think they would have gotten one).

Bottineau has a long history of not having very many players (out of their total male enrollment) out for football. This has been going on thru numerous coaches, administrations, etc.....

New Salem won it 22-16, but South Border gave them a heck of a game. Just looking at scores, it seems that Napoleon should probably be the favorite in Region 5 right now, but it should be a lot of fun the rest of the way.

Looking at the scores of LLM's games I have honest questions- Is LLM's bench really good or do they play their starters for most of the game? Or are the teams they have played really weak? Or a combination of these factors?
