Region II

The teams in Class A

Postby ndfan » Sun Aug 13, 2006 7:51 pm

1 May-Port/CG
2 Larimore
3 Thompson
4 Cavalier
5 Park River/Fordville-Lankin
6 Northern Cass
7 Griggs Co./F-S/Midkota
8 Midway/Minto

Thats how I'm thinking the region goes. I've heard some good things about Mayville and they shouldn't be to shabby this year. Had a pretty young line that is coming back with some experience and Lorenz at QB. I don't know much of what Thompson or Larimore have and Cavalier is down this year. I don't think you'll see the state champion come out of this region this year. ANybody else agree to disagree????

The first region II team to play I'm guessing will be when Cavalier hosts North Border next Tuesday. I have a feeling that all of Pembina county will be at this game. Neither of these two teams likes losing to either in anything and will be the first time they have ever played in football. Should be a great game. Anyways when do the other region II teams start playing? MPCG usually starts out with Hatton-Northwood. What about the other teams in the region? Cavalier the only Tuesday game?

Just heard on the radio today that Midway-Minto will NOT be playing a varsity schedule this year. Said they didn't have enough juniors and seniors to field a competitive team and will be moving down to 9-man next season.

Midway-Minto got stuck into a bad situation over a year ago. After having been in a co-op with Fordville-Lankin for over 25 years they were forced to drop F-L due to student numbers or be forced to play AA with only 22 players in 2005. So rather then be forced into that, F-L had to be droped and their four to six or so players went to Park River. Which left M-M with only 19 players in Class A in 2005, two of them being girls that both weighed no more then 100 lbs. They didnt even have enough players to even run a full 11 on 11 scrimage!!!

The word is only one boy in the entire senior class of probably around 12 boys at midway plays sports at all. Even if they had F-L in 2005 playing in Class A they still wouldnt have won a game. They were pretty bad. The Activities Association needed to evaluate that situation alot better then it did and now it looks like everyone in Region II is going to have to suffer because of it.

Numbers crunch is hitting everywhere.  Since open enrollment numbers are so up and down the schools have mindboggles everywhere.  Schools have to look down to elementery numbers to coop and such.   Is everyone leaving rural america?   Seems like it.  I say it is a miracle they keep sticking with football.  If they loose the program it is so hard to get it back and hats off to those kids that made it in a struggling program with low numbers and hats off to those coaches as well!!!

From Grand Forks Herald

A look back at 2005

Cavalier continued to dominate after a classification switch. The Tornadoes, after three straight unbeaten, state championship seasons in Class AA, won the Region 2A title with an 8-0 regular season. The Tornadoes' bid for a fourth straight state title came up one win short, however, as Velva-Sawyer topped the Tornadoes 33-12 behind Tommy Weidler, who passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another. Cavalier's Matt Anderson was named Class A senior player of the year. Park River, Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg and Larimore also were playoff qualifiers from the region. Larimore reached the semifinals before falling 29-14 to Cavalier.

A look ahead to 2006

Herald rankings (based on coaches' poll): 1. Larimore; 2. Cavalier; 3. Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg; 4. (tie) Park River and Thompson; 6. Northern Cass; 7. Griggs Co. Central/Finley-Sharon.

The reasons: The top teams all have proven quarterbacks. Larimore graduated its powerful backfield of Brandon Heider and Brandon Baumbach (a pair of all-state defensive players, as well). But the team has big-play potential with Sam Hager (93-of-197 passing, 1,264 yards) throwing to a receiving corps headed by Danny Ferdon (35 catches, 598 yards). Tim Schempp, a fourth-year regular, anchors a veteran line. The Polar Bears are inexperienced at running back. Cavalier has a rich tradition. But the Tornadoes were hit hard by graduation and transfer losses. New head coach Rod Mack has experience in the backfield with quarterback Karsen Yelle (55-of-96 passing for 905 yards) and running backs Mitch Ford (617 rushing yards) and Chris Lawonn (376 yards) returning, but he must rebuild his lines. Two-time all-region quarterback Luke Lorenz (59-of-133 passing, 854 yards) returns to run the Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg offense, and he'll be working behind a veteran line, anchored by Troy Dale and Ross Thykeson. The Patriots have seven returning defensive regulars.

Returning all-region players: Mitch Ford, Cavalier; Luke Lorenz, Mayville-Portland-C-G; Sam Hager, Larimore; Josh Hegg, Thompson.
