First Round
Saturday October 23rd
G1 - (5-4) R1 #4 Lisbon @ #1 Hillsboro-Central Valley R2 #1 (7-1)
If Lisbon had a secondary and could throw the ball at all...... they have one of the best fronts in 11B. Fun to watch those guys work up front. HCV 28 to 6

G2 - (7-2) R2 #3 Harvey-Wells County @ Central Cass R1 #2 (8-1)
I think this is the best first round match up. I honestly don't know on this one. I will take CC 28 to 26.

G3 - (5-4) R4 #4 Hazen @ #4 Bishop Ryan R3 #1 (8-1)
BR 34 to 20
G4 - (6-2) R3 #3 Velva/Garrison @ Beulah R4 #2 (8-1)
Beulah will be ready to take it out on someone and Velva will get that honor. Beulah 42 to 12

G5 - (5-4) R2 #4 Thompson @ #2 Kindred R1 #1 (8-1)
Kindred Defense will be intact for this game and I see them holding Thompson to one score. 21 to 6 Kindred

G6 - (5-4) R1 #3 Oakes @ Langdon-Edmore-Munich R2 #2 (8-1)
Langdon cruises this week.
G7 - (5-3) R3 #4 Nedrose @ #3 Bowman County R4 #1 (8-1)
Bowman county should that they can play and got a huge victory last week. Either they are way better than I thought or Beulah is not as good as I thought. Bowman 35 to 6
G8 - (7-2) R4 #3 Shiloh Christian @ Des Lacs-Burlington R3 #2 (8-1)
I am taking Des Lacs-Burlington..... a tough first draw for Shiloh.

G1 - (5-4) R1 #4 Lisbon @ #1 Hillsboro-Central Valley R2 #1 (7-1) HCV wins 44 to 20 will pick apart Lisbon's secondary

G2 - (7-2) R2 #3 Harvey-Wells County @ Central Cass R1 #2 (8-1) Top 5 or 6 guys talent wise here is comparable but I have said it all season...not sure how they compete with the depth of HCV, Kindred, CC. Central Cass wins 38 to 30.

G3 - (5-4) R4 #4 Hazen @ #4 Bishop Ryan R3 #1 (8-1) Bishop rolls 40 to 18.

G4 - (6-2) R3 #3 Velva/Garrison @ Beulah R4 #2 (8-1) Weird game last week...not sure what to think of Beulah...was it a fluke? Are they not as dominate as I thought? Will they be in that tier of 5 or 6 teams that could go all the way? Either way I will take them this week in a closer game than what I would have thought last week. Beulah wins 28 to 14.

G5 - (5-4) R2 #4 Thompson @ #2 Kindred R1 #1 (8-1) Kindred starts building up a head of steam. Kindred wins 40 to 12.

G6 - (5-4) R1 #3 Oakes @ Langdon-Edmore-Munich R2 #2 (8-1) The game that should have happened last year but Covid took away. Oakes isn't who they were then but neither is Langdon. However, Langdon is still dang good. Langdon wins 40 to 20.

G7 - (5-3) R3 #4 Nedrose @ #3 Bowman County R4 #1 (8-1) Huge win last week and they are peaking at playoff time. I will take Bowman to roll fairly easily. Bowman wins 44 to 12.

G8 - (7-2) R4 #3 Shiloh Christian @ Des Lacs-Burlington R3 #2 (8-1) Probably will be the best game of the weekend and is one I could see going either way. I will take Des Lacs because of homefield but think it is essentially a coin flip. Des Lacs wins 28 to 26.

Not going to make picks but just want to say that 11B seems really wide open. The primary deciding factor leading up to the championship day might be home field. Lots of evenly matched teams up top. Usually there's 2-3 teams and then a steep drop off. Also a lot of really talented teams with more than 1 loss. Should make for exciting playoffs.

This is the one division where all the playoff teams actually have a winning record. Seems like this may be the only division the NDHSAA actually got right.

Saturday October 30th
G9 - (9-1) R1 #2 Central Cass @ #1 Hillsboro-Central Valley R2 #1 (8-1) I have no clue. I don't think CC will surprise HCV this time. I will take HCV 22 to 14.

G10 - (7-2) R3 #3 Velva/Garrison @ #4 Bishop Ryan R3 #1 (9-1) I think I will keep place doubt on Velva saying they are not as good as people think.... and they will keep proving me wrong over and over again.
BR 16 to 12

G11 - (9-1) R2 #2 Langdon-Edmore-Munich @ #2 Kindred R1 #1 (9-1) I have no clue here again. LEM has the experience and a coaching staff that has been there and done that. I think Kindred has the better players but will they come together for the win? Also Kindred lost their very talented DE and RT so they will have to find someone to take over.
Kindred 28 to 16

G12 - (9-1) R3 #2 Des Lacs-Burlington @ #3 Bowman County R4 #1 (9-1)

Bowman County is playing as good as anyone in the State right now but I like Des Lacs-Burlington 24 to 22

Quarterfinals should be extremely entertaining this coming weekend!

Central Cass @ Hillsboro/CV
Rematch from week 1 when CC stunned HCV 31-12. HCV has played a stacked schedule all year and has not had a hiccup since that week 1 loss with wins over Langdon, HCV, Lisbon, and Kindred, the only team to beat CC this season. I think that this game could be the best of the week in this division, especially if the weather holds out and CC can attack through the air. I'm going to predict a win by the home team who seems to really have things figured out. HCV wins 28-22.

Velva @ Bishop Ryan
Throw out all the records and previous results when these rivals play against each other. It should be a battle! Bishop Ryan has won 9 straight since their week 1 loss to Trinity. Velva got a big round 1 win 12-0 over Beulah after dropping two straight to finish the regular season. I think Bishop Ryan wins a home game in about the same fashion as they won their regular season match-up. 22-14 Lions

Langdon/Edmore/Munich @ Kindred
This game should be worth the price of admission. LEM is in a little bit of unfamiliar territory, having to go on the road for a playoff game. I'm sure Kindred will be packed, but I am also very positive that LEM will travel well and have plenty of fans On hand as well. I'm going to go with the experience of LEM in these big-game situations to get the job done. LEM wins 26-20.

Des Lacs/Burlington @ Bowman County
This might be the toughest game for me to pick this week, I have not seen either team play. I was shocked and impressed with Bowman's big win over Beulah a couple weeks ago, but then when Velva beat them as well it made me scratch my head a little. This is the longest road trip that a team will have to make this weekend at 240 miles for DLB. I think that plays a factor. I'll take Bowman County to win 32-14.

G9 - (9-1) R1 #2 Central Cass @ #1 Hillsboro-Central Valley R2 #1 (8-1) - Really good matchup. I think this will be the best game of the weekend. Two large teams with good top end talent and depth. I think this game comes down to this: the way to beat HCV is throwing the ball. They are outstanding on the D-Line and do a great job against the run. Watching CC last week and this season I'm not sure they are consistent enough through the air to get them. When in doubt take defense and the ground game in the playoffs so I will lean HCV in a great game. HCV wins 28 to 22.

G10 - (7-2) R3 #3 Velva/Garrison @ #4 Bishop Ryan R3 #1 (9-1) - Velva lost by 8 in the first matchup. I have made this argument before: it is really hard to beat a good team twice. I'm not sure who wins this but It almost never goes all home teams win. So based on the "can't beat us twice thing" I will take Velva to upset in a close one. Velva wins 24 to 22.

G11 - (9-1) R2 #2 Langdon-Edmore-Munich @ #2 Kindred R1 #1 (9-1) - This is very hard for me because I'm debating last weeks performance vs. season long. Based on what I saw all season I would have picked Kindred to win by 8. Based on what I saw last week I would take Langdon to win by 12. Kindred didn't look good against a Thompson team that wasn't great this year. They were solid but should have taken the "number two team in the state" to the very end. I'm trying to balance these two things and find a truth in who Kindred is somewhere in the middle. I think Kindred exploits a hole up front against Langdon and gets the edge there. Thompson ripped Kindred apart through the air (throwing it to one kid), if Kindred isn't better than that this week Langdon will win. That being said I think Kindred figures it out enough to get a win keeping Langdon out of the Dakota Bowl for the first time in forever. (I predict Langdon makes a return trip there next year though). I will take Kindred to win really late in the 4th - 30 to 28.

G12 - (9-1) R3 #2 Des Lacs-Burlington @ #3 Bowman County R4 #1 (9-1) - Part of this is wishful thinking for me. I really want to see the Langdon Bowman rematch from a great semi-final game a few years ago in Langdon. This time Bowman would get to sit home and wait for Langdon to take that long bus ride and I think it would be the difference. Both Des Lacs and Bowman have had great seasons with one loss each (Des Lacs to Bishop and Bowman to Shiloh). Both both losses were in early September and they have been rolling since. I think this will be another really good game but will take the recent experience that Bowman has in big games to win out. Bowman wins 44 to 38 - no real evidence for a shootout just a feeling.

Re: DLB vs. Bowman - I can't see either team breaking 20 points on the scoreboard. This will be a physical game. For DLB to win, Rist will need to carry the ball 35 times. It's a mind-boggling number but he carried 41 times last week and I think ~35 times against Velva the week prior. Those games were heavy on 3yd carries (which controls the clock) until he breaks one. I don't think he'll do that more than once against Bowman. For Bowman, it's the same thing. Score early and control the ball the rest of the game. That was the recipe against Beulah and last week against Nedrose. Toss Up... 16-13 either way.

V/G vs. Ryan... Velva absolutely had to be sick after leaving Ryan a few weeks ago. They did not play a good football game and they had to know it. Penalties were too much to overcome. You can bet this will be on their mind when they step foot on the Herb Parker turf again. Ryan can be sneaky explosive.. you have to know where Hendrickson is all the time... and Lundeen has such good command of their system you wouldn't think he's a freshman. That said, Velva's freshman QB certainly didn't look like a freshman last week and most the season - which is something Ryan made him look like when they first played. Now throw in the rivalry intangibles. You can bet your a** Velva wanted this game to happen again and just as much Ryan knows that. This won't be the sloppily played game we saw 3 weeks ago. Final score 24-20.

I know... I didn't pick winners. :)

I think the CC/HCV and LEM/Kindred games contain the best 4 teams at this point and will be worth the price of admission and then some. Would have been nice to see a crossover from the beginning to get the best teams in it at the end. I would like to see them seed 1 through 8 next year instead of just 1 through 4.

I think it's tremendous that all 8 teams could potentially win. When was the last time we could honestly say that in a quarterfinal round?

What great games.... 3 OT's in the quarter finals in Velva/BR.... 70 Yard Kick Return by a Freshman for the win in Kindred/LEM.... DLB and Bowman Back and forth struggle.... HCV Defense coming up- Big Time...

What more do you want in a playoff.

Kindred Over Bowman.... but 3 and HCV 18 over BR....

#4 Bishop Ryan (10-1) @ #1 Hillsboro/Central Valley (10-1)
I don't feel that this one is very close. HCV wins by at least 20.

#3 Bowman County (10-1) @ #2 Kindred (10-1)
I'll take the home team when the visitors have to travel that far, but I think it will be aa game, at least for most of the day. Kindred gets a late score to pull away 30-14

After watching BR last week... HCV will walk away with this one. I still can not believe Beulah and Des Lac are not in it.... I was way off on that projection.

The Kindred/BC will be close depending on weather. Nice day and the QB's can throw..... that is Kindreds weakness. They will give up some passing yards but Kindred can score through the air as well. Kindreds run Defense is to good to get beat on the ground so if it is windy and throwing is tough.... I think Kindred wins by 12 if the weather is good.... I take Kindred by 2 points.
