Most Interesting Games This Week:

Oakes @ Harvey - I think Harvey was one of the most under talked about contenders coming into this season because of the big boys moving down (HCV, Central Cass, Kindred, Beulah). Had the regions remained the same I think Harvey would have been the favorite to win region 2. They are real deal and get a second week in a row of a good program. A huge win on the road over Shiloh and a big win at home vs. Oakes will open people's eyes. Harvey wins 36 to 18.

HCV @ Kindred - Central Cass going to HCV and winning like that surprised a lot of people. HCV is talented, deep, and has a pile of seniors. They will be looking to avoid a 0-2 start vs. two old AA opponents. Kindred looked dominate vs. Grafton and gets this matchup at home. I will take Kindred by 6 (28 to 22).

Thompson @ Central Cass - I have a feeling this game won't be as interesting as the names of schools might suggest but we get two of the top class b schools squaring off in the same division for the first time in a while. Crazy how quickly Thompson went from playing 9 man to having Central Cass in the same division as them. I think it is close early and CC pulls away late because of depth. Central Cass wins 36 to 16.

Just to be clear.... 11B is a new division not an old one that schools moved down into. They took big dominate 9 man programs, mixed normal 11 man programs and small 11AA programs and put them all together to have a very competitive league.
Size of teams.... CC has 56, Kindred 42, Oaks 42,EEK 29, LHM 30, Lisbon 41 OG 29, Sargent 29 Carrington 41, Grafton 33, Harvey 38,HCV 55,Langdon 30, NC 24, Park River 39, Thom 36, Bishop 25, Des Lac 42, Ned Rose 25, Newtown 33, Rugby 43,south p 35, Stanley 38, Vevla 24, West hope 34, Bowman 28,DT 34, Hazen 46, killdeer 30, shiloh 33,Mclean 30

So I will not argue that football is a game of numbers. The more kids the better the chance you will have some older kids that are bigger and stronger. I don't understand why the teams that have kids in the 20's are playing 11 man in the first place.

In my opinion, the new football alignment is catering to the small triple A schools and smaller double A schools from the last alignment. The fact that public high schools in Fargo and Grand Forks are not in the largest classification is ridiculous.

agree 110%, there is no reason teams from Fargo or GF ever should be in any division but the top. Their programs have struggled and NDHSAA wants to cater to them, to give them a chance. Get in the gym, work harder, and make yourself better. Absolutely ridiculous!!

It is just crazy that Fargo and GF schools are not playing at the top level any more. South was always playing for the State Champs but now they are not and everything has to change. Just crazy. The size of the programs are two different with Class 11B. Football is a game of numbers.... 30 kids against 50 kids is to great a difference IMO. I do think it is the most competitive class in North Dakota because of the tradition of the smaller schools. We will have to wait for a few more games to make the final call on if it will be competitive.

Great example of the squeaky wheel gets the grease unless one wheel is from Fargo. Small schools are mad...who cares! Fargo complains...and the whole system changes! Bottom end of AA and single A get screwed and won't be competitive and that is ok with the state association as long as Fargo, Grand Forks, HCV, Central Cass, Kindred, and Beulah are happy. You will never convince me it makes sense to have Southern McClean (41 boys), Linton (40 boys), and Sargent County (32 boys) in the same division as Central Cass (152 boys), HCV, and Kindred (123 boys). Or Wahpeton (235), Turtle Mountain (284), and Valley City (194) in the same division as Central (637), North (612), and South (502).

Side note: Why don't we seriously consider the 3 class system in basketball? Because large class b schools (HCV, Grafton, Central Cass, Kindred, Beulah, and the privates) dominating is ok regardless of what it does to small schools.

Fargo complained? We just love to spew 'unwarranted facts' nowadays don't we...it happens every day (not necessarily saying here...but everywhere).

I think we seriously consider the 3-class system every year with many quality thoughts but we can't seem to get over the media issue or NDHSAA's thoughts on $$$

Fargo and GF didn't complain??? The NDHSAA just decided they should move the schools from 2 of the 3 largest cities in ND down??? Then when given the option they all opted down but secretly really wanted to stay in AAA??? Come on give me a break. But if it makes you feel better to say it was forced on you and Fargo is a victim of reclassification so be it. I'm sure everyone else will play sad songs on their violins for poor Fargo....

Fargo didn't complain.. In fact it was GF all the way.. and they catered to those 2 public schools in GF were doing to bad, so they switched it based on the "suggestions" from the superintendent in GF..

Just for the record those numbers are way off.... Linton HMB and Sargent County have more boys than that... or else they would be playing 9 man.

By the way Linton HMB already beat Hazen....

Those are the numbers from the NDHSAA which pulls them from DPI. Not sure how you feel they are inaccurate but that is where they came from. Unless you have first hand knowledge of the numbers being wrong, I'm going to go with those.

These are the correct numbers from the ndhsaa football plan before enrollments are adjusted.

Defensewinsgames is right that Linton has 40 boys but HMB has 22, Strasburg 25 and Zeeland 3 for their total of 90. Also, North Sargent has 32, Milnor 32 and Sargent Central has 22 for their 86 total.

The thing is that CC is basically a Coop as well. Mapleton and surrounding areas. Kindred is basically a coop of five towns together as well. Just like a Sargent County or Wells County.... All these towns are Coop basically.

I definitely agree with you that those schools who border traditional "Class A" districts are at a huge advantage when it comes to enrollment and students opting to attend their schools. Although, a true co-op will have a lot more disadvantages than the single school team.

I don't think just because you are a team within 40 miles of Fargo, all of the sudden you are great with the best players in the State. I think a LAMOURE L-M will greatly disagree.... I have more respect for all the schools out there in this state besides 60 miles around Fargo. You use Kindred and Central Cass all the time. When was the last time one of them won the State in any level of football... I honestly don't know.

You're not getting the best players in the state, but you're getting a much larger student population than your traditional smaller district that has to co-op for athletics. I'm not going to argue this topic with you anymore as I won't change your mind and you won't change mine. Both of the schools you mentioned have had success in football over the last 10 years:

Kindred- Made AA semi finals in 2020, Made AA playoffs in 2019, played for state AA title in 2016, Made AA playoffs in 2013, Made AA Semi finals in 2011

Central Cass- Made AA Playoffs in 2020, Made AA Semi Finals in 2018, Made AA playoffs in 2016, Made AA semi finals in 2015, Made AA playoffs in 2014

I think more so than the number of kids, you look at the resources that these schools right outside the metro areas have access to... Sanford Power, 7 on 7 summer leagues, Organized youth football leagues, access to local college players who want to get into coaching, etc.

The biggest advantage that Kindred and CC enjoy is nearby employment centers and parental involvement. Both currently enjoy both advantages. Mapleton is not far from their own high school, it seems. Their currently considering their own middle school. Kids in the Mapleton district can open enroll to WF, Kindred or CC. Northern Cass picks up kids from the West Fargo district as they have open enrollment. CC does not have open enrollment. Only special situations (teacher/parent at CC, sibling at CC, etc) qualifies a student, as I understand it. CC has not co-oped in the true sense of the words since they co-oped football with Chaffee in the 90's, I think. CC is better described as a large consolidation as is Kindred. I don't know that Kindred allows open-enrollees either. That Kindred's district includes Oxbow CC doesn't hurt their golf team.
