2019 PLAYOFF BRACKET

The teams in Class A

Curious where the Thompson picks are coming from? They lost by a few scores a few weeks ago and have lost a few important pieces since then. Just curious about the reasoning not saying it is wrong.

There have been mentions of this. Who have they lost and to what injuries?

Two seniors that started on both sides of the ball. Haven't heard official confirmation on what the injuries are or timelines for return. I know both have been absent from the box scores in recent weeks. Don't want to speculate on injuries since I can't say for sure what the injury is or how serious/how they they will be out. Someone else might care to share more or have more information than I do and can fill in some blanks for you.

Thompson having injuries might change my pick. I know they pretty much shut down Lisbon's running game the first time they played and were in the game until late in the 4th quarter. I also have heard Lisbon's starting RB has been banged up. I think it'll be a 1 score game either way.

Clay Odenbach is out for Thompson. Sam Roller Thompson’s main running back did not play in first matchup. Two missed receivers for touchdowns and a fumble on the ten were the difference in the game. If Thompson takes care of the ball and can get the ball to their big tight end Danner(dude) they have a chance to pull the upset. Will be a close physical game. Thompson 26-20. They just have more experience in big games.

Lisbon is playing with a chip on their shoulder. They are on a mission and Thompson will not stand in their way. 35-21

Velva by 20+
Bowman in a tight one.
Langdon- could be game of the week
Lisbon- nice to see them making a play-off run again after a few down years.

Lisbon playing with a chip on their shoulders is great. There are guys on the Thompson team that have won 5 state championships same as the number of wins Lisbon has had in the 5 previous seasons.

Was anyone at the Velva vs. Bishop Ryan game earlier this year that can offer some insight into what happened? I know it was a close game so should be an interesting rematch.

Actually, a bizarre kick return for a TD in the last minute or so made the game a little closer than the score indicated. Velva botched a squib kick and one of Ryan's more athletic lineman actually ran it back for a TD. It was a good football game, don't get me wrong. But it appeared Velva was in control pretty much most of the football game. Ryan didn't do themselves any favors by turning the ball over 5 times, including a fumble deep in Velva territory. But Velva intercepted the ball 4 times which can be attributed to their solid defensive scheme and game plan.

You'd have to think Velva will try and force Ryan to beat them through the air again. Ryan's strength is in the trenches and Merck and Feller are dangerous and a handful when you give them a little space.

Velva will need someone other than Gage Florence to provide the big play. You'd have to think Ryan will not let him breathe on Saturday. Selzler is going to have to make a couple more throws than what he was probably asked to do season long.

But what a fun game this will be. Two proud traditions. Schools are 20 miles apart. Rivalry. One thing for certain, you are not going to see the mistakes that were made in game 1, especially for the Lions. Both teams are going to play their best football game. It's a rivalry game with stakes bigger than a region championship which is what is usually on the line with these two teams. The players know the circumstances and will respect what's at stake.

Congrats to Minot Ryan on their state runner up 2019 season!

JK obviously, but wow Lisbon has to be in awe of what happened to them today.

I'm all in for upsets but I just don't see that happening this Friday. Cardinals run defense is no joke neither is their pass defense. Only way Bishop has a chance is if they score more then 30 points. Langdon goes back to back and wins 42-12

I totally disagree with you on how Bishop Ryan wins this game. If it turns into a shootout where they try to score 30 they don't stand a chance. They win this game by not turning the ball over, going on long drives, running the ball, and taking minutes off the clock on every drive. You need to keep the ball away from Langdon to give yourself a chance. Trying to jump into the race won't go well for you. You have to control the ball, the clock, and field position. No one has been able to do it all year which is why their closest game all year is 28 points. Should be a fun one. I will take Langdon by a 3 scores as they pull away in 2nd half.

The only points the starting defense has given up was the 13 to Oakes. The rest of the points were against the JV defense mainly against the opponent starting offense.

Ryan will have to do exactly what they did to Velva on Saturday - control the line of scrimmage and run the football. A couple of Merck's long runs, Velva had him stopped in the backfield he just kept his nose to the grind and played to the whistle. Ryan never abandoned the run game and that's what they needed to do to win. If Ryan has to rely on their QB to make throws, they are in trouble. He's certainly not a Romfo or Selzler in terms of the ability to throw the football.

Defensively, Ryan's game plan was lights out. Obviously dominating the line of scrimmage was huge, as well as the field's footing, but not allowing Florence to get off tackle is something a team hasn't been to do against Velva all season. they also dialed up some timely blitzes to add fuel to an already overmatched Velva line - including the strip sack-TD dagger at the end. Just a well called game overall on the Ryan side.

Just some intangible thoughts on the game. There is so much respect between the two programs on the field. Players helping each other up. Florence peeled off a solid run and Merck was the first person to give him a helmet tap. Of course there was an unsportmanlike taunting penalty on the first TD, but chalk that up game emotions (and maybe a little payback from game 1). Secondly, if anyone wants to start a "pass the hat" campaign starting a field turf fund for Velva... now would be a good time to start. That field got trashed on Saturday! (this was sort of a lighthearted intangible).

Probably for another thread, but going forward this rivalry won't go away. Ryan returns their skill guys and Velva returns...everybody. Region 3 undoubtedly will go through these two teams again next year. Enter DLB in that equation too if they can find someone to replace and match Gunville's production. What I'm hearing is Velva and DLB are solid for years to come.

I think, and I'm being serious, the best chance Minot Ryan has of winning, is NDHSAA finds out, immediately after the game that Langdon played the Championship game (only) with an ineligible player.

I think that is more likely than winning on the field.

They just beat a 10-0 team the exact same way they beat 2-7 teams and winless teams. Score how they want when they want until after the first drive of 2nd half when they pull their starters.

This has been a pretty impressive run through the season and playoffs for Langdon so far. I had this thought after I saw the score of the semi-final game: Is Langdon that much better than the rest of the field in Class A? I have heard comments when the playoffs began that they wondered how Langdon would fare if they had to play a full 48 minutes. Still don't know because it hasn't happened yet. I had that same feeling about HCV last year and Langdon played the game of the year for them and pulled what most people considered to be a pretty big upset.
Not sure how to look at the championship game this year. It is difficult to make much for comparisons because there really isn't much to go by. Playoffs have pretty much been east vs. east and west vs. west. There were a few cross-over games in the regular season with the most notable being Oakes going out to Bowman Co. and winning the first week of the year. Harvey lost to both Shiloh and Velva and Rugby beat DLB. I believe those were the only east-west games where both teams ended up making the playoffs. Ryan and Langdon do have one common opponent in Carrington, Ryan beat them 42-0 and Langdon beat them 40-8.
Good luck to both teams and I hope we have an entertaining game on Friday.
