Technically since Garrison is forfeiting isn't Beulah 4-0? They picked up a game but still get the forfeit?

Technically yes...I hate when teams forfeit last minute or during the season...it screws everything up!

Yea I wonder how that is all going to figure into the QRF, since technically they are going to have more games than anyone else? Unless some others in the region also picked up a game.

It shouldn't matter...the game likely won't count in the numbers as it was played against a non-varsity team.

I haven't seen non varsity competition gets excluded I guess, that whole region takes a hit having garrison not play any games though. Even though they still probably would have gone winless.

I have stood up for the administration at Garrison-Max and will continue to do so. They tried to make their decision final early in the summer and give the other regional foes time to make adjustments to their schedule. Unfortunately the community would not let it go away (which to some extent, might be understandable too) to the point that they didn't make anything final until August... which was too late for opponents.

Wonder if the NDHSAA should take a hard look at situations like this and Drake/Anamoose? If schools cancel their seasons but want to remain in their same classifications when the 2 year realignment comes around, maybe put them on "probation" (for lack of a better term) for the next 2 year classification period in order to build numbers back up, play JV schedules and work toward varsity schedules after that... sort of like starting over and building a sustainable program. Like the D-A situation, they have left opponents schedules in array for 2 seasons now. Who knows how this will play out for Garrison-Max next year and I'd be hesitant to schedule them if I were an AD.

We have better get used to schools having hard time fielding teams in the near future. The numbers of old where schools of this size can field a team are changing. Parents, kids, and even community at large is changing its attitude on football based on latest findings on injuries suffered from football. The Grand Forks Herald just had article on Larimore with their numbers this year for 9 man football they are down two reserves because of injuries and low participation numbers. They then went on to say that they are to return to 11 man football next year but because of numbers they are going to play 9 man independent schedule for next year. There neighboring school Midway/Minto also opted this year to 6 man football team. I think were just see the beginning of number of schools fighting to keep football viable sport in the future. This is not just happening here in North Dakota its happening all over the nation. I don't know how football is going to change to alleviate these fears but if nothing is done participation number will continue to decline.

This is a fact....I was surprised when I heard Larimore was destined for 11 next season. How long before it affects small Colleges, or are there plenty to sustain that for the future?

I do know that in Cavalier its sort of a combo of things, first injuries, then a growing Cross Country track program in the PCN Grizzlies, along with what you are talking about B-oldtimer...I was thinking this would be the season it would be PCN Grizzly Football but I guess the numbers would set them up to 11 man (which IMO is fine too) North Border is now hampered with injuries but still have good participation numbers.

its definitely going to be interesting moving forward in ND....I used to talk about Consolidate vs Co-op and that Consolidating is better and now it seems that both are at a stand still and maybe rightfully so.....gives a chance to stand back and see the big picture and really evaluate the future without making spurred decisions.....

not sure what the future beholds, for Class B 9 man especially

Perhaps we are destined for a revamped 4 class system. Class A, Class B 11 man, Class B 9 man and 6 man. Class B 11 man would be a consolidated AA and A as we currently know it with the top half of A teams staying 11 and the bottom half going 9 man.

you would still have way to many lop-sided rosters from the top, to the bottom half of 9-man

I agree with some of this but I think you narrowed the problem too much. It isn't just football that is suffering. I have heard a lot of coaches/administration in the last two years complain about participation in football, track, basketball, baseball, etc. The consensus I have heard from this group that is short on numbers is that they have classes that aren't participating in anything whether it be drama, football, volleyball, cross country, or whatever else. They are seeing entire classes where a huge percentage of kids just aren't doing any extra-curricular activities. I agree that some of it comes from the recent medical findings in football but I think more than that schools are just struggling to keep kids engaged. Multiple schools have really good numbers for youth football (30+) and by the time they hit that freshmen level there are only 4 or 5 kids left playing. Blame it on coaching, on a lack of drive from students, on the medical issues, on publicity problem, on declining enrollment, or on all of the other things that help to contribute to the problem but I don't think it is just football that is suffering, it is everything.

As someone who has been in this business for a long time (education) and has lived in a small town for a long time I think one of the issues with the growing number of students who choose not to participate in sports, drama, music programs, etc... is the growing number of students who come from low-income families. I don't have any numbers to back this up, but it seems like the higher percentage of students a school has that qualify for free/reduced meal programs the higher percentage of kids who choose not to participate in school programs. For a number of small towns the percentage of free/reduced meal students is climbing every year and for whatever reason so is their number of non-participants, it makes me wonder about the correlation.

I've been saying similar for years. So much comes down to our parents. If they have an education past HS they know the importance of extra curricular activities. This is one of the advantages private schools have that no one mentions. They have good family lives. Their parentS encourage their kids to be involved.

The parent thing does make a large difference. It seems like the kids whose parent(s) never participated in anything don't participate either, while those whose parent(s) did are more likely too participate.

I just wanted to add to this...I agree with all of the above. As far as the low income families having a less participation rate, that is quite possible. It can be expensive to start kids at a young age (work prohibits them from getting to and from practice, limited resources, not able to purchase equipment, lots of reasons). I think it's a little tougher for a kid to suddenly go out for football as a Freshman after his team mates have been playing flag football since 2nd grade. No personal experience with that, just made sense.

My son had surgery at the end of his senior fb season. The surgeon did everything he could to make sure he knew he didn't have to play college fb. At most visits, he mentioned the ramifications of football injuries. We left it completely up to our kid and he is currently playing at that level...but as a parent, it's tough to hear each week about all the injuries.
Side note: Annnnndddd….I am pretty sure some kids don't want to work that hard.
