The Velva vs Harvey and Des Lacs vs Rugby scores surprised me a little. Was anyone at those games to offer insight?

Harvey is devoid of playmakers on offense, and hence couldn't sustain drives against Velva's stout defensive front. Nearly every Aggies drive started inside the Hornets' 40 yard line. That really puts your defense in a tough position, and when most of those kids play on the offensive side too, fatigue sets in very early. Harvey doesn't have great depth and is very young to boot, and they'll rely heavily on a handful of freshman to make significant contributions. Kids who are still growing into their bodies and shouldn't be expected to reasonably match up against 18 year olds. Florence showed tremendous speed and cutback ability on a couple long touchdown runs up the middle, and Velva's offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and opened up big holes all game. The Aggies looked as good as advertised, while Harvey will struggle to move the ball and put up points against every team they play. Class A football games are decided outside the hash marks, and if you lack elite offensive talent from your skill position players, it's very difficult to win games.

Velva’s success this year is going to depend on that Sophomore class. A lot to put on 15-16 yr olds but with only 7-8 Jr and Srs COMBINED those boys are going to have to step up and they did last night. Florence and the QB looked like Seniors last night. But the line play from those younger kids are what stood out too. I’m sure Coach Sandy and company are very pleased with the performance last night....but will need to have a short memory with DLB coming to Velva on Friday night.

Lisbon never won a game last year and they put up a great game against Langdon. Game was a lot closer than the score makes it out. They were in it even in the 4th.

As for Rugby at Des Lacs/Burlington, both teams showed talent at the skilled positions. Both QBs can throw the rock a mile. The DLB QB threw an absolute laser on an out route to his receiver at the goal line for their TD in OT. Big league throwing motion. However, INTs, fumbles, penalties kept the offenses from scoring much.

Rugby lost their 2 stud wrestling brothers to knee injuries, the younger in the first half, the older in the 4th quarter. That did not help the Panthers at all. They had the lead when the older brother went down. The younger brother was carried off the field, the older gingerly walked with his arms around 2 coaches. Don't know what shape they are in but the younger looked like he was a candidate for a scope as he went off the field.

DLB was missing 2 seniors, big bodies, one due to mono and the other for unknown reasons. One is a stud senior wrestler. The other looked like he would help the lines a LOT!

Rugby looks very much like they are on the road back to the level they are used to competing at.
