Region 1AA

A look back at 2005

Lisbon and Rugby shared the top spot in the region, matching 6-1 region and 8-1 overall records. Northwood-Hatton and Fargo Oak Grove also were playoff qualifiers. Northwood-Hatton, with all-state running back Blake Prosser working behind a line anchored by all-staters Brady Engen and Greg Voigt, made its first postseason appearance in the co-op's seven seasons of existence. The west dominated the playoffs, as Rugby was the only 1AA team to reach the state semifinals, where the Panthers lost 27-7 to eventual state champion Dickinson Trinity.

A look ahead to 2006

Herald rankings (based on coaches' poll): 1. Rugby; 2. Lisbon; 3.Fargo Oak Grove; 4. Valley City; 5. (tie) Grafton and Northwood-Hatton; 7. Carrington; 8. Central Cass.

The reasons: Rugby is long on experience. The Panthers graduated their two main offensive weapons in quarterback Cody Goetz and running back Cody Gronvold. But eight starters on both offense and defense return from a 9-2 team. The team has four all-staters back to lead the way in Reed Duchscher, Kevin Leier, Travis Fritel and Michael Schmaltz. All-state linebacker Ben Kaspari heads the veterans back from an 8-2 Lisbon team. Lisbon's offense is inexperienced, with leading rusher Ryan Moellenkamp (750 yards) and lineman Greg Larson the only returning regulars. But five starters are back on defense, headed by Kaspari, Larson on the line and Patrick Dougherty in the secondary. Oak Grove has one of the state's top running backs in all-stater Luke Hvidston but must rebuild the line in front of him.

Returning all-region players: Ben Kaspari, Lisbon; Kevin Leier, Mike Schmaltz, Reed Duchscher and Travis Fritel, Rugby; Luke Hvidston, Oak Grove; Nick Smith, Carrington; Elliot Rust, Central Cass.
