First home playoff game for Jamestown since 1994. That’s a long time folks but it took a move to AA to do it.

Do the ends justify the means if you are Jamestown? Had they not made the playoffs this year, would their next move have been to petition to get down to single A?

It will be very interesting in the new football plan if Shanley decides to petition up to AAA. That will leave AAA with an odd number and Jamestown, regardless of all of their efforts, may end up having to go back to AAA.

I don't recall Jamestown being a serious threat in boys basketball at the state level, I wonder if they have any pull with the High School Activities Association to petition down to class B.

Jamestown did not choose to move down to AA, they were forced to, and I'm pretty sure it was documented that they didn't really want to but had no choice. Also, They don't allow opt up to AAA, otherwise Shanley and St Mary's would already be AAA because they never wanted to go AA either.

NDHSAA is too obsessed with even number of teams in a class, so they'd never allow an odd number of teams. Otherwise you'd have Devils Lake in AA and Jamestown in AAA.

Mandan, you are incorrect. High School Activities Association does allow you to petition up in class. You cannot petition down, however, if a AA team would choose to petition up, they generally are allowed to do so.

Also, if you go back and look at the voting record a year ago when they rolled out the new format, Jamestown in Devils Lake not only voted in favor of the new plan they were both very vocal in claiming that they belong in double-a for competition purposes. Jamestown's administrators were very active during the formulation of the new plan to ensure their placement.

It also is not accurate that Shanley never wanted to be AA. If you talk to their leadership and fan base, they LOVE being in AA, their attitude may be changing with a new coaching staff, but under the previous regimn, they wanted to rain in AA.

Even with the NDHDAA’s obsession with an even number of teams in a class AAA, AA, and A, I believe a team can petition to opt up a class if a team in the larger class is willing to move down. The smallest school in the larger classification is given the first option to move down, if they don’t accept to move then the next smallest is given the option and so on. If there aren’t any takers in the larger classification to move down, then the petition of the team requesting to move up is denied.

I can’t comment on the competitive attitudes of Shanley or Jamestown’s administrations or fan bases in regard to their current football classification however, It seems that the administration and citizenry of Devils Lake has been adamant to the NDHSAA of the unfairness of their prior AAA classification. With their movement to AA it’s apparent that the squeaky wheel does get the grease.

OK, yes, you could try to "opt up" from AA to AAA. But then the smallest AAA school would have to agree to go down, and the chance of that happening is much smaller than any other class. Fargo North has the smallest adjusted enrollment in AAA, and I imagine that would not be a decision they'd want to make - to leave the other Fargo public schools behind and drop down.

I know Devil's Lake always wanted to be AA. Everything I remember reading in the papers or here did not say anything about Jamestown wanting to go to AA. I did find an old Jamestown Sun article that I must have missed before that states they were looking forward to it.

I know talking to some St Mary's people when they moved to AA that many didn't want to. I can't say for sure what the administration or coaching staff thought.

I know Watford City has had zero success against Fargo Shanley, especially in the playoffs. But this will be the best Watford City team that Shanley has faced. I'm sticking with my prediction of an 18-7 Fargo Shanley win. However, I wouldn't be completely shocked if Watford City kept it closer or even got the win, if they get a couple of breaks. Shanley's offense is superior, but Watford has a physical defense and the weather may play a factor.

St. Mary's should beat Devils Lake by 2 touchdowns. Devils Lake has improved from the beginning of the year, and they have kept games close (and pulled off the impressive win over Jamestown). I think the bye week helps St. Mary's and their 2 losses will motivate them in a big way.

St. Mary's vs. Shanley. Shocking.

The NDHSAA has to ask themselves a question: Is it better for St. Mary’s and Shanley to kick everyone’s butts in Class AA or get their butts kicked in AAA? I guess I for one am sick of seeing these two in the State title game almost every year. It makes AA the most forgotten of all the football classes.

Some history since St. Marys and Shanley started playing AA in 2009. Included win totals (not including this years postseason) from the current Class AA schools over that time period:

Bismarck St. Marys has a record of 71 wins and 23 losses and 3 for 3 in state title games.
Fargo Shanley has a record of 81 wins and 16 losses and 3 titles in 6 state championship appearances.
Wahpeton 58- wins.
Grafton- 45 wins
Central Cass 42 wins
Valley City- 40 wins
Watford City- 27 wins (since 2013), 28 wins in A from 2009-12, won AA title in 2008 before dropping down
Turtle Mountain- 10 Wins

Jamestown had 18 wins in AAA from 2009-2016 (just moved down this year)
Devils Lake had tremendous success from 2007-2010 in AA, moved up to AAA and had 19 wins from 2011-2016 (moved back down this year).

Shanley and St Mary's would do just fine in AAA They wouldn't get their butts kicked. They just wouldn't be in the state championship game every year.

With the EDC being down a bit this year...I think Shanley would have been a AAA Playoff team...BSM would have missed out as the WDA was quite strong (maybe sneak the 4th spot out)...not the same every year though.
